Ok so it may not be everyones favourite venue for racing but they have held a lot of meetings this week and kept roads clear for horse boxes, racegoers, jockeys, staff and everyone connected to race this week.
Not high quality stuff i admit but they have done a fine job and should be given more praise and respect for all the hard work that has gone on in keeping the racing show on the road.
Well done Southwell, The saviour in my mind of racing.
January 8, 2010 at 20:14 #268843…. and another four meetings next week!!

Give it a rest, TAPK.
All-weather racing isn’t fundamentally wrong just because you can’t make it pay and with the industry in the state it is in, especially with the meteorological carnage of the last three or four days, Southwell deserve every credit for giving the sport some presence in both the daily press and betting shops.
Readying the track clearly hasn’t been an easy task and staff could well (and quite reasonably) have refused point blank to even try. But their perseverance has been rewarded and whether racing thoroughbreds or Shire horses, all involved are to be commended.
January 8, 2010 at 22:02 #268872Quite. Good for them!

I have never lowered my standards that far so i wouldn"t know if i could make it pay or not!I could give an experienced guess and say i would lose like everyone else does, but what do you expect when you are betting on 1 class 5, 4 class 6, and a class 7 race at Southwell today! I wonder why there"s 3 different bookmakers in every town, funded by?? YOU!

So it’s not that you don’t like it because you can’t make it pay, it’s that you don’t like it because you don’t think you’d be able to make it pay?
Personally, I just like to watch horses running quite fast. A Class 6 may be run 5-10 seconds (or more) slower than a Classic but it’s still a fair old lick.
The bookmakers I go to are funded by me, as is the newsagents where I buy my RP & the supermarket where I buy my beans. It’s called a business. If favourites won every time, the bookies wouldn’t have be a business, they’d be a charity.
Anyway, we’ll see how much I AW racing pays me when Charlie Smirke finally gets round to running again.

Anthony,if you are donating to your Bookmakers then they must be a charity,as like you say you are getting something in return from your Supermarket and Newsagents when you hand over your cash to them! Very Charitable of you!Your loyalty to the All weather has to be commended! This "Charlie Smirke" you are so keen to back next time out, is no doubt a prolific winner on the All weather is he?

No he isn’t. But I backed him each way for his three runs in December & he hasn’t let me down yet.
Serious gamblers have their own systems; I’m a small stakes punter who currently has a system called, ‘backing horses called Charlie.’ It doesn’t yield many winners but it’s good for a laugh.
And yeah, I get something in return from the bookies. I hand over a pound (maybe even two pounds on a ‘dead cert’) & they let me watch horse racing. With stakes like mine it’s certainly better value than subscribing to Sky.
January 8, 2010 at 23:22 #268898"One flew over the cuckoos nest" is on sky tonight,i"m in the mood to watch it now!

January 9, 2010 at 18:25 #269008Considerng how many horses are entered for the all bumper card, would it not make sense for the the other three courses to arrange something similar?

Agreed – but I somehow suspect they are waiting to see how Wednesday goes before going ahead, although as has been pointed out elsewhere the abandoned Lingfield card did have three bumpers scheduled.
January 10, 2010 at 19:02 #269166Interesting to note Kempton are considering switching Saturday’s turf fixture to the AW.
However "bumpers and Flat races for jumpers being considered" – perhaps they read this forum!!!
Will we have a 2m 4f flat race on the Kempton Polytrack?
