I was about to admonish RR for posting on the wrong thread….until I realised he was merely answering me, who’d done the same!

If you leave, BH, I will literally WEEP – and no one wants to see that.

Let’s hope for an amicable resolution.

Have just looked at the highlighted articles and they are disingenuous to say the least. It’s pretty shameful to be using non-membership of GamStop as a marketing feature.

But running a forum is not a paid job and sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. Perhaps sometimes those decisions are wrong and should be changed.

But I hope you will stick around and give admin a reasonable chance to respond BH. For all we know they could be on their holidays at present and might not have time to give a detailed response for a couple of weeks.

Marlingford ever the perfect voice of reason.

Even when I’m trying my hardest to be reasonable, I can’t lie up with Marlingford the same way nothing could lie up with Flightline!

The “slots” article is bad, but my feelings towards it beyond apathy are broadly those of amusement and a bit of pity. The one advertising casinos not on gamstop is disgusting.

Seeing as the next juvenile hurdle is not until a week on Sunday, that should give plenty of time for admin to ask themselves;-

What kind of gamblers would be signed up to gamstop?
Why do these casinos not want customers signed up to gamstop?
What would be the highly probable consequences of a problem gambler betting on these sites?
If one of these sites asked you to send traffic in their direction, is it ethically correct to do so?
Can it be reasonably assumed that the money used to pay for this “article” originally came from a vulnerable human being?
Does that vulnerable human being live in a vacuum, or does problem gambling affect proxy parties through theft and/or neglect?
How about grief through the elevated risk of suicide?

How much did they pay you? Enough to make you comfortable with the above? It was enough to send at least one problem gambler in their direction, otherwise they would not have given you a penny. Sure, if a problem gambler wanted to find those sites bad enough, they would do so without your help. But that argument never exonerates the drug dealer in court and it does not exonerate you.

I do not want to leave this fine forum and its fantastic members. However, that desire to stay is exceed by my desire to not want to be on a forum funded by some of the most tragic cases that blight our society.

I am sure that as much as I might be missed, it will not be for long, nor will my absence cause any discernible damage to the forum. I do not hold any weight here. Indeed, my ultimatum is an appeal to basic decency, and the only leverage I possess is my presence.

The choice for yourself is very simple. You possess absolute power to rid this site of one of two things. Myself, a person who has invested countless hours over the best part of twenty years to this site, or that disgusting “article” designed solely to harm and exploit vulnerable human beings.

You have about ten days to make your decision.

I do understand your dilemma here BH. I like many others never visit the home page but have now had a gander. I initially supported Ian’s quite pragmatic approach but I am seeing your side more now. I was interested in the legality aspect and found a site called Rightlander.com that did some analysis of how these non-licenced sites draw people in. GamStop which I think is short for GameStop came into being April 2018 and via the gambling commission.

One commentator below believes marketing the sites is illegal. If he is correct then marketing would be in breach of a law. I think that needs further research and I suspect he may be wrong. British sites need to be registered and pay tax to HMRC on any profits. The unlicenced sites would pay tax or not in their countries of origin.

‘Due to the existence of online casinos not on Gamstop, UK players may legally use these sites even if they have an active Gamstop exclusion. The sites themselves are not illegal – although marketing the sites to players in the UK is – and while they are not licensed by the UKGC, most are licensed and regulated by international bodies based across the world in jurisdictions such as Curacao, Costa Rica and Panama.’

    It’s a thorny one !

Let me stop you right there Gamble. You should never mix your stops!

Both Gamstop and Gamestop have reckless gamblers by the Niagaras, but there the similarity ends.

Gamestop aka Gamestonk is an old skool video game retailer, that proved a very profitable punting vehicle during the pandemic:

I’m just as crackers as the last time our paths crossed Glenn, in fact, worryingly more so. I feel vindicated in using the word GameStop as one of the articles writing about gamstop used the word in error.

A highly interesting deviation nonetheless. A 30k investment to rise suddenly to 50 mill is unheard of – and the guy was planning to buy a house.

I’ve never cared for short sellers although I was greatly tempted with Debenhams the white elephant of Oxford Street and House of Fraser which never knew what it was about. Of course the hedge funds sold 30% of their stocks ( 3x more than the mutuals ) in 07/08 and are blamed for the panic selling and burn out stocks that ensued. Some are mooting stocks are going to be heavier hit with the present day scourges and instability.
I worked out my membership worth on this site totals 29 pence cf. earnings/membership numbers so I too have little clout

I presume casinos will pay a bigger advertising buck than bookies – it’s not a world I know and all small beer I guess. Never been involved on any game online – it’s not my thang !

Nowhere nearer on this then. I tried to get to the coast today but forgot my mobile and my laptop so had to return and then at 3.30 – I decided to put the kettle on and had a tasty cucumber sandwich. I’m off in the morning now. 🍻 🍺

Admin (Cormack15) is back in the building as he posted a couple of one-liners on the main forum the other day

So can we expect a response to this thread, or is he content to remain shtum and lose one of TRF’s most valuable correspondents?

I interpreted the two brief postings as “yes, I’m around so I will have read this thread, but I choose not to respond at this time. If I respond at all it will be at a time of my choosing.”

But of course I could be mistaken in my interpretation – it’s been known!

I think you have admirably been admin’s indirect mouthpiece in this tacky affair Ian. You’ve explained well the economics and necessity for ads and advised us in a roundabout way to put on the visual mute – which is certainly a pragmatic solution. I thought you put it rather well. On the other hand this whole BH or bust area needs far more research and other views. It’s a highly interesting thread because it is suspenseful.

    I’m a bit like Kermit
    halfway up the stairs.

    I’m possibly about
to take a step up to BH,
    and go up one stair
    and then I might
    turn around and come down
and join Ian at the bottom !

Sorry I’m on a bit of a roll
this morning – I have a feeling someone is following me.
One thing gentlemen, and no ladies have yet pitched in,
is certain we do have time
    although the clock is tocking.

From my standpoint I am looking at two near certainties and let me mark my card.

BH is quite a way ahead for thread of the year.
There is only one Ian Davies is my current favourite for poster of the year.
There is three months to go and things may change – less time though for BH’s fateful decision.

P.s. In thread of the year last year there were two standouts for me : Dictator and BH.
In the big one – I went for Gingertipster I and if memory serves he only got a miserable two votes. He was excellent last year. Davies I had close behind. Some posters come with a wet sail in the autumn months – it’s legal but they may have had their legs up for nine months. It’s too early to say.

As for Matron’s helpful comment below – is it then that some entity is given carte blanche to write they want for X amount of pounds.

Really in an inverse way I could do that !!!

If I remember correctly the “articles” are automatically fed to the site.

The best course of action would be to send Cormack an internal mail to make a decision

I can delete the article, but it is up to Cormack to decide as I don’t get involved in the front-end of the site.

I had a bit of a whinge about this a couple of years ago. From memory, the article I complained about included such gems of advice as “there’s racing somewhere in the world 24/7 so whip out your phone and get stuck into trotting in Timbuktu and juvenile handicaps in Jakarta at all hours of the day and night”.

A Beginner’s Guide To Horse Racing Betting

I know the site has to be funded somehow but I’d rather it was plastered in wall to wall Paddy Power ads – or even the aforementioned inco pads ‘n’ Saga holidays advertising- than this disreputable tripe.
