I’m not talking about the fotbs here, I’m talking about those terminals which offer odds which are now a mainstay of most if not all betting shops.

What never ceases to amaze me is how grumpy betting shop staff look when you go up to the counter and force them to do some work, ie write down a price, with the insinuation that you should use the terminals instead. Not realizing perhaps that these terminals will eventually force them out of a job.

I’m ashamed to say that I used one of the terminals today, perhaps because the one person working in the shop looked too irritable to approach.

After using it I went to another shop to see if the odds were different, but they weren’t, it seems to me that the odds are the same on every machine as they are all owned by the same company. Perhaps this is the future- all odds on every event the same across the industry, all run by machines, zero value available and if you somehow manage to win your accounts are quickly shut down?

What do other forumites think?

There will always be value, one shop knows by offering a slightly better price your likely to make the trip there instead of going somewhere else

Same applies online, id rather make up a whole new account if icould et a betfer price rather than take a lesser easier option and in all reality, your better betting online nowadays anyway

The future of betting is and will only ever be online now, especially after the fobt go awol

Must admit I have not seen these as I rarely visit shops now but betting shop staff are just shop assistants nowadays with no knowledge of racing at all.

I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highways

Why don’t the terminals in Betfred offer horse racing prices ? You can place bets on tiddlywinks yet there’s no facility for antepost horse racing.

This is true. Most of the staff in my local ( the only shop for miles ) have no interest whatsoever in horse racing.

And I’m fed up of seeing the limited wall space filled with virtual and South African cards and no form for the British stuff.

And the Betfred presenters are too busy waffling on to even announce that the horses are going behind or lining up.

    Terrible customer service

Gone are the days of staff knowing or being interested in ANY sport !!
I used to manage betting shops in the eighties and nineties and I wouldn’t employ any of the staff they have nowadays!!

And to be honest I tend to avoid betting shops as they have less concessions (BOG and enhanced places etc.) and are a pain!!
Why go to a betting shop when all you have to do is turn your computer on?

yes but much easier to track a punter online and close down your accounts if you happen to be successful. Whereas if your face isn’t know to staff you could go in and bet much more, in theory.

The other issue is the squeeze on FOTBs. This will have a knock-on effect on bookmaker profits and make them even more draconian about shutting accounts to keep to profit margins- making it near impossible to make a profit as a punter (at the moment it’s just very difficult.)

Outwitting the bookies is part of the fun of betting!!

My advice would be spread your bets amongst different bookies and never if possible place the same kind of bets with the same bookies.
Hence avoiding creating a pattern to allow them to form a profile of you as a punter.

Since I have been betting online I have had several accounts closed but have still managed to get back in with these bookies.
I do understand peoples frustrations with accounts being closed but sometimes naivety plays a big part in this happening

To be honest I struggle with the discipline needed for online betting and have never had any problems with online bookmakers restricting my accounts. More likely to roll the red carpet out! :yahoo:

I was restricted at a live bookies once. I find in the past that I’ve had a lot more success betting down a real life bookies because online, i tend to get bored and end up doing a lot of “throwaway bets.” you know a fiver here, a tenner there and it all adds up.

I know a friend of mine who lost a lot online and I said to him once- when was the last time he actually withdrew money? And he couldn’t answer. At least with physical bookies you actually see the money and hold it in your hand- it’s a much bigger rush getting a huge wad of cash that it is seeing it online.

Another friend of mine had to restrict his deposit amount on betfair- it seems the urge to bet compulsively is even more acute when it comes to online betting.

There are still knowledgeable folk working in shops, just far fewer of them. Most of us in the shop I worked in until a few years ago knew our sporting onions. Hardly a surprise they are thinning out though, quite frankly it’s a shite job on low pay these days.

With regards to those betting terminals, which were around before I left, I vaguely remember hearing that they were actually run by an Austrian firm so they are probably the same odds all over Europe. IIRC they do cover all sorts of sports more popular in Europe like ice hockey or handball.
