Ha a little each-way double on

    The New One

    and

    First Lieutenant

, both of whom are available at 4/1 with William Hill. Silviniaco Conti has been impressive at Aintree before and is rightly favourite, but I can’t have Paul Nicholls’ argument that he didn’t get into a hard race at Cheltenham. He did, however, take a heavy fall, which imo negates the fact he didn’t get a hard race. First Lieutenant went to Cheltenham off a break and he could well be a fresher horse than Silviniaco as a result. I’ve heard Quito De La Roque is hopping off the ground but he’ll need to improve again to win here. He was the best novice of his generation imo (Tell Massini aside) but they were a poor crop and he’s the only one to have remained competitive in Grade 1’s since. Hope he runs well as I know a good few people who’ll be having their few euros on. The Aintree Hurdle looks wide open. I backed Zarkandar in the Champion and thought conditions were ideal: fats pace, soft ground, what more could go in his favour. Yet he didn’t even stay on best of all as was expected, getting a hard race in the process, as did Countrywide Flame. Grandouet and Thousand Stars may represent bigger dangers.

Another crossbar moment yesterday with The New One going down by half a length :( This comes after narrow defeats to Concordin and Defy Logic which have all cost me big pay outs.

We’ll try try again today. A My Tent Or Yours and Sprinter Sacre double pays just short of evens and imo that’s a decent price. Opposition to My Tent Or Yours looks weak while Sprinter Sacre is Sprinter Sacre! I do hope Flemenstar runs a big race though, he’s possibly the best jumper around.

I’ve baked Dynaste also. Never thought he’d be available at 5/2. I’m not a big fan of Rocky Creek and I feel Dynaste will have too many gears for him.

The other horse I’ve backed today is Road To Riches. I feel At Fishers Cross is worth taking on on this ground. My lad would probably like more cut int he ground too but at the price it’s worth taking a chance he’ll go on it.

My Tent Or Yours (4/9) & Sprinter Sacre (1/3)
    €50 double (WH)

    Dynaste
    €20 win @ 5/2 (Bet Victor)

    Road To Riches
    €10 e/w @ 6/1 (WH)

I think Solwhit is a huge price today for the Liverpool Hurdle. He’s the undoubted class horse of the field who confirmed his well being with victory in the World Hurdle. That showed he still retains the ability of old. I don’t think this horse ever received the plaudits he deserved – if it hadn’t been for Hurricane Fly he’d have dominated the Irish 2 mile hurdling scene. I think he should be a 6/4 shot today, and that makes 9/4 most appealing.

    2.50 Aintree
    Solwhit
    €20 win 9/4 (Bet Victor)

Another horse who won at the festival which I expect to go close today is Alderwood. He has been carefully handled all year and it must be remembered he went on to Grade 1 success over hurdles after he won the County Hurdle last year. It’s likely we haven’t seen the best of him yet.

    2.15 Aintree
    Alderwood
    €20 win 9/4 (PP)

I’ve already had a small interest in Ninetieth Minute for the National but my main fancy has got to be On His Own. At 7/1 he wasn’t much of a price but Boylesports have him at 11/1 now and that is far more tempting. He was going well when coming to grief at Becher’s last year and he has the right man in the saddle for this race.

    4.15 Aintree
    On His Own
    €7.50 e/w 11/1 (Boyles)

Two horses that have ran in recent weeks that could be worth following:

There was very good word for

    THE GAME CHANGER

before his bumper and he duly obliged under a confident Nina Carberry. I think he may be racing in different silks next time out but that shouldn’t stop him from following up as he’s got bags of ability.

The other horse is Jim Bolger’s

    SABURO

, who won the opening race of Ireland’s flat season a few weeks back. I was really impressed with his attitude and he looks a typically tough Bolger horse. He should be far better when he steps up to 6 furlongs and he’s already one that could be bound for the Coventry.

Tommy i agree with you on ANNIE POWER being a champion hurdle horse i been telling gord about her but he not having it he says got no chance in champion hurdle we disagree. And he called our DEFY LOGIC a headcase as well i think he likes him really with gord being a JP fan i think he put the headcase up as a RSA horse next year

I think Stubbs on better ground could turn form around also i liked MASTER SPEAKER and ALPINIST as well any thoughts on these horses.

And some darkhorses in Ireland on flat mine are

RASMAEYA could be Dermont Weld HORSE FOR IRISH 2000 GUINEAS
INDIAN CHIEF may become a st leger horse and could be a decent price at epsom.

Sorry for only getting back to you now now Darren.

    Annie Power

has blown me away this season Darren, the way she went by Defy Logic was super impressive. The question is does Mullins let her take her chance against Hurricane Fly or might he send her to England for races like the Christmas Hurdle?

    I see

    Defy Logic

as much more of an Arkle type than RSA. His enthusiastic running style would make it difficult for him to stay in the RSA imo. He’s on my Arkle shortlist though 8)

I don’t know too much about your two for the flat I’m afriad, but encouraging to see Indian Chief has form with the well regarded Loch Garman.

Had a lovely evening at the local races in Wexford, super weather for it so the turn out was disappointing! Was the best day of the year so far down here. The racing wasn’t great but it’s the first time in a long time I came away from the place with a few pound so I can’t complain. Thoughts go out to connections of Prince Of Leisure who sadly lost his life in what looked a freak accident in the second last :(

Had a hoor of a day yesterday, backed

    The Game Changer

who either clipped heels or slipped up when short for room in the Land Rover. I’m sure he would have went close. I then backed

    Boston Bob

and I don’t know what to make of Townend’s ride. At one stage I thought he was going to pull up. However, if you take the winner out of it, the rest finished very tired and it’s likely they went too hard early. He would probably have been a good second at least if not for falling.

    Today was better with

    Sir Des Champs

rewarding the faith on ground he wouldn’t have liked. He finds masses off the bridle and they could have went round again and Long Run wouldn’t have got by imo. On good ground I still think he can win a Gold Cup.

Tomorrow looks another cracker, with the Ryanair Novice Chase looking ultra competitive. I feel

    Arvika Ligeonniere

can return to form on ground he’ll like and going right handed. His jumping was very good at Cheltenham before being pulled up and on this ground he could take beating. Realt Mór will probably take him on for the lead but I don’t think it’s a necessity for Arvika to go from the front, if he can just sit in behind Realt Mór it may even help him. This is quite possibly the novice chase of the season.

    6.40 Punchestown (tomorrow)
    Arvika Ligeonniere

Agree on Arvika Tommy, going right handed suits him, a return to early season form would be good enough.

So your last €100 is in your pocket, you have to back one…which is it to be Quevega or Solwhit?!

Well Pants how are you keeping? :)

So your last €100 is in your pocket, you have to back one…which is it to be Quevega or Solwhit?!

Both have been hugely successful over the past five years or so, with only Hurricane Fly preventing Solwhit from being the dominant two mile hurdler. Neither owe me a penny which makes it hard to desert one but on this occasion it has to be done! The ground has become very bad and it’s been raining steadily in Dublin for some time now, but we know both horses (and indeed Reve De Sivola) like cut in the ground.

Quevega wasn’t at her best at Cheltenham and although I’ve heard nothing this year, there have been murmurs in years gone by that she’s only gone to Cheltenham ‘half fit’ and I’d be inclined to think that was probably the case this season too. Today is her ultimate aim and she’s won this easily the past three seasons. I thought her performance last season was her finest, beating Voler La Vedette, but in hindsight Voler may not have been at her peak after the World hurdle where she ran a career best. If that is the case then Quevega has never faced an opponent of Solwhit’s calibre over three miles. He’s a different animal altogether than the likes of Mourad.

Solwhit has beaten Quevega the only time they met, when Punjabi split the pair over 2 miles here four years ago. These will be completely different circumstances but he has now proven himself over three miles so the trip should not be a worry. If he had been coming straight form Cheltenham I’d be less inclined to oppose him but it’ll be a great performance if he can do the treble. On the other hand he didn’t look to have a hard race at Aintree where he dispatched of Holywell easily. The way he races you’d have to think there was plenty left in the locker that day but Quevega would have won just as easily imo.

My €100 would be going on Quevega

Although I’m glad to be in a solid profit, I must admit my disappointment that the figure on here is not higher. In reality I’ve made a very nice profit this season, particularly since Cheltenham, but this has unfortunately not been reflected in my p/l. I have to confess that for a period I lost my confidence and didn’t put up a number of bets here when the thread was going bad. Cheltenham got things going again but the period following Cheltenham (right up to the present) has been extremely busy for me with lectures and college work, and didn’t get to post on here half as much as I would have liked. Most times I’ve been discreetly operating the mobile phone to place bets and watching the race replays at night. Thankfully, after exams in a couple of weeks just a thesis stands between me and a masters. Will try to post more often during the summer.
