I agree with One Eye that the thread should be deleted, though I believe they just get locked and moved to the Archive.

    Firstly, .

not aware that there is a One Eye problem

Secondly, there is no need for navel gazing. A call to stop bickering is bound to start new outbreaks of it, rather than to stop it.

I lost an eye when I was much younger, and it’s never been a problem to me Gerald. As long as you’ve got one good eye you’ll be ok :D

    Agree with your other sentiments.

Matthew, there was very little need for this thread. I’ve never taken anyone’s comments as someone ‘having a go at me’. I’m old enough to respond/ignore as I see appropriate but I appreciate your good intentions.

I was new on here but now I’m a classic winner

I’d still consider myself as a relative newcomer to this forum, and I’ve been on for around a year!

You’re not progressing as your owners would like THM – maybe you’ll be a lot better next season :D

THM’s owners are terrible he won them the World Cup Competition in his maiden year and now they are cashing in on him with a sell to Goldolfin…

I have two small suggestions since we are navel gazing.
Firstly could people stop quoting each other incessantly when replying to posts in a thread. Unless you are referring to something way back, it should be obvious what you are replying to.
Secondly Corm, the BF forum (wild west place though it is) has an excellent feature showing the new posts on a thread since you last viewed it and clicking on that link takes you to where you last viewed the thread- saves a lot of time. Is it possible we could have that here?

I often use ‘purist’ as an insult because I’ve seen it (and them) suck the fun out of too many of the things I’m interested in.

Keeping it very simple: Over 1,500 meetings this year. There is more than enough room to not take every single one seriously.

Don’t you perhaps think that some at least of these

    "purists"

are also the very people who make sure, through their efforts, that there is any "fun" for you to be had at all?

    As for

    "not taking [every meeting] seriously"

, well … that sounds a bit like proposing an open charter for non-triers, doesn’t it? The trouble with turning horses and jockeys into football teams (as we’ve seen with the Shergar Cup today) is that it brings in the spectre of team tactics, which worries your "purists" as much as it infuriates your casual punters.

I have a theory….The bickering on the forum is at it’s highest level durung the frustrating months of the flat. Just need to look how few races make the Big Races section in comparison to the jumps..very fewpeople come out on top and when they are losing…..watch out..

I was thinking of starting anger management classes but as I was going to be my first student and didn’t want to pay the fees I fell out with myself and scrapped the idea which is sad…….he blamed me but the truth is it was all his idea really I had nothing to do with it. :o

Sometimes one wants to highlight particular phrases and respond to them, and sometimes there have been several posts between statement and reply, which needs to be clarified.

But you are essentially in the right: those endless replies consisting of a long, quoted complete post followed by a smiley or something equally minuscule are terminally lazy!

Secondly Corm, the BF forum (wild west place though it is) has an excellent feature showing the new posts on a thread since you last viewed it and clicking on that link takes you to where you last viewed the thread- saves a lot of time. Is it possible we could have that here?

The feature exists – the first icon on the left, in blue, in front of the title of the thread, does exactly that. Or it is supposed to: since the last redesign it doesn’t work reliably, at least not for me.

Christ oh mighty, the thread was meant in good intentions.

I’m sure it was, and it has produced some interesting debate. When a Forum represents a sport which at root is about contrary debate between people (as to which horse is going to win) do you not think it’s unrealistic to expect everything to be smiley sweetness and light?

Racing people love a passionate debate: that’s one of the most attractive things about them.

    No Arguing = No Forum.

Firstly, no, the purists I refer to make no effort at all. They just complain or worse still, aim themselves right at something they don’t agree with in order to give themselves something to complain about. Like the people I have seen at 20Twenty cricket who complain about the chanting & drinking like they didn’t know it was going to be that way.

I wouldn’t describe an owner or a trainer as a purist as I would assume that they would steer horses away from meetings they don’t agree with.

And no, I don’t think the Shergar Cup or meetings like it are a charter for non-triers. In fact I think that’s nonsense.

    Like Humpty-Dumpty in

    Alice Through the Looking-Glass

, you appear to be saying that when you use a word, it can mean anything you want it to mean. Here’s an extended definition of "purist" on WordIQ:

"A purist is one who desires that a particular item remain true to its essence and free from adulterating or diluting influences. The term may be used in almost any field, and can be applied either to the self or to others. Use of the term may be either pejorative or complimentary, depending on context…"

No reference her to the kind of complaining curmudgeons that you outline. And as a matter of fact I read larger piles of whining and complaining posts on this Forum from those who moan about the terminal state of racing and its failure to enter the "real world" or to be "run like a business", than I do from the people who wish to safeguard its traditions and maintain the quality and special ethos of the sport.

So, don’t knock the kind of purists who spend much of their working lives and talents doing their best to sustain that quality and ethos. These people are very much aware of the commercial USP of Racing and its satellite industries and businesses (unlike many of the whining "real worlders") and its largely through their efforts that the sport we love is still afloat.

My point about non-triers is not so bald as you suggest. But the Shergar Cup / Windsor Football Shirts model certainly muddies the idea of every horse being run on its merits, as has often been noted both here and in the responsible Racing press. Pacemakers are one thing, but where you don’t know in advance which runner’s being sacrificed to make the pace (c.f. a famous Shergar Cup case with Fallon a few years back) then the punting public has no chance whatsoever – let alone your purists!

    Evening all,

Just a quick thread to ask "do we need so much arguing and negativity on this forum?"

You should have been on here 6 or 7 years ago, I don’t visit that often but have a read of a few threads every now and then, this is like a forum version of the teddy bears picnic to what it used to be. Mind you, having said that the place was very vibrant.
