I hope everyone remembered to change their clocks last night.

This has put us back on GMT, which is where the time ought to be.

Why do we persist with this outdated idea by fussy politicians and bureaucrats who think they can do better than nature.

I always find it amusing when supporters of the idea say it saves daylight or increases the amount of daylight. No it doesn’t – it just moves the daylight. The amount stays the same and there is nothing that can be done about that.

It would make far more sense for France and Spain to join us on GMT, instead of being on the same time as Berlin.

I always thought it was so young children weren’t walking to school in the dark in the morning in the depths of winter but, when I googled the history of this yesterday, I could find no reference to that in its origin.

I always feel like BST is the natural state of affairs, whereas in reality it’s the switch back to GMT that belatedly restores order after ceding to BST in March.

It means Waitrose effectively doesn’t open until 11am this morning, though – no one ever thinks of Chezza’s needs (well, no one apart from Chezza, that is – Chezza thinks of little else) when messing about with the time!

The Almanac website gives an interesting historical account of DST…

“I always feel like BST is the natural state of affairs.”

Absolutely not! It is an entirely artificial construct. GMT is a real event.

Children may be going to school in lighter conditions but that only lasts a few short weeks.

All the arguments used for BST are bogus. There was a case for it as a war time measure and when farming methods were different but not now.

    Absolutely not!

The first day my local one opened, I amused the security and customer service desk staff by offering the observation: “nice work, but where are the ‘no riff raff’ signs?”

This has put us back on GMT, which is where the time ought to be

From a solar sense yes, as the sun at the Greenwich Meridian is due south (more or less) and at its zenith at midday (1200) which is neat, tidy and correct if one believes that the civil clock should always follow the solar clock; but I’d contend that GMT is not ideal for the waking, living and working life of the majority blessed or cursed to live in a country so far north

If GMT were kept the whole year through sunrise (in London) around the summer solstice (mid-June) would be about 0345 and sunset around 2020 which is roughly equivalent to it being light at 0300 and it being dark at 2100. So, a lot of daylight wasted until the majority leave their beds, and an hour’s loss to the long summer evenings that BST permits

From a parochial racing point of view this would mean (non-floodlit) evening meetings having to finish by around 2030 at the latest and much earlier in April, May, July and August

And now, this reversion to GMT means sunset by December around 1550 and darkness around 1630, which I personally dislike intensely

Keep BST all year please…I know it makes sense :good:

When I was younger I thought I was being clever and helpful putting the family clock back an hour before I went to bed
woke up the next day, looked at the time and went to football, an hour early because Father had also put the clock before he went to bed…

“Keep BST all year please…I know it makes sense.”

It was kept all year between 1968 and 1971 but was discontinued because hardly anyone liked it.

We should just start the working day earlier in the summer months.

As for race meetings finishing earlier, I think that would be a good move. I am sure jockeys and stable staff would like to get home earlier.

How about we keep putting it back an hour – get an extra hour in bed twice a year – and see where we go with it?

    I’ll fetch me coat.

That was over fifty years ago, CAS. The world has changed a lot since then; I’m pretty sure permanent BST would be a lot more popular now.

I quite enjoyed it as our school gave us dayglo orange bands to wear over our blazers on the dark walk to school in the mornings :-)

In truth, I just wish they’d leave the clocks alone at either GMT or BST all year

If only I was left wing enough (or drank) to merit the title “champagne socialist” – “pinko soft drinks merchant” is more me.
