Some say they were responsible for the assasination of JFK.
Others have suggested they were behind Watergate.
It’s been suggested that their sons Simon, Mike and David went on to careers in PR.
All I know is that they stand on boxes at Kempton Park and solely determine the, usually disgraceful, price that all SP bets, placed in betting shops the length and breadth of the nation, are settled at.

David Rowlands?
Is this prufrock’s brother?
The plot thickens.
BTW – Coral don’t stand at Kempton Park….
October 10, 2009 at 13:51 #252719Ah sorry, David Hood, for some reason thought it was Rowlands.

I consider this case of mistaken identity a personal all-time low…
October 10, 2009 at 14:13 #252724David Hood, so aptly named. A man whose firm started to payout on the morning of the 22nd November over the shooting in Dallas…and yet JFK wasn’t shot until the afternoon of the 22nd November! THEY KNEW!
And who pulled the trigger? I think you’ll find it was the sister of a former managing director of Kempton Park.
October 10, 2009 at 14:24 #252725Barry,
Who is it that determines the SPs at Kempton? I was under the impression that it was three men dressed in similar attire to these, standing on upturned beer crates, whose main clients are big bookmakers.
October 10, 2009 at 14:24 #252726I think you have just officially lost everyone now, Glenn…
October 10, 2009 at 14:27 #252727catch up later in a rush, standing on a box at portman park today
October 10, 2009 at 14:32 #252729Barry,
I would say what happens at Kempton is more accurately characterised as market failure than market forces. There would appear to be a near-monopsony, with the only punters being off-course firms dictating prices. Only in this case they dictate that they recieve ever worse prices!
If that’s not market breakdown I don’t know what is.

maybe not:
back in the United Racecourses days there was an MD named Sue Ellen….
…..whose Dallas namesake had a sister, Kristin Shepard, who shot JR.
more to the point, the House Select Committee on Assassinations scrutinised the photo closely and observed:
===============
(675) All three men are shabbily dressed, befitting their apparent status as vagrants.Tramp A, however, is the better attired, wearing well-fitting jeans and a tweed-like sports jacket, although this, judged by 1963 styles, was several years out of date.
Tramp B is wearing ill-fitting slacks and a double-breasted suit coat.
Tramp C, from his battered fedora to his worn-out shoes, has managed to achieve a sartorial effect similar to what one would expect had he been fired from a cannon through a Salvation Army thrift shop.
(676) While such clothing might be a disguise, their footwear seems consistent with their classification as vagrants.
All three men are shod in worn, low-cut oxfords that appear to be leather-soled.
Tramp C’s shoes seem to be several sizes too large for him.
======================
barry – is, or is that not, eerily reminiscent of those commonly seen on upturned beer crates ?
