Mike – as I said, the VIEWER wasn’t lied to, and as the show stated, if the people involved who were led into this and were tipped losers were refunded, then what’s the problem?
Do you know that all the others were refunded – did it say this anywhere?
February 1, 2008 at 22:48 #139595There was a text in the end credits saying that all losing bets by participants (which would explain why they were told NOT to bet the first race – budgets!) were refunded.

OK thanks.
However, within 8 minutes of the show, he said he could GUARANTEE the winner of every horse race and that he would show us how. At the end, he said MOVE OVER MIAMI would win but as his system was at the end of the pyramid this wasn’t a guarantee, and as we know the horse lost.
So is his statement that he could guarantee the winner of every horse race not a lie?

February 1, 2008 at 22:56 #139600It depends on perspective at this point though I think…. you watch the likes of shows by Derren Brown and you know, as people have pointed out, that you’re watching just that, a show, not a documentary.
The Moon Over Miami part of the programme was always going to be where the truth of the pattern comes out and the ‘drama’ element takes over – obviously I don’t know more than anyone else here the finer details of the execution of filming the MOM / Marodima switch/misdirection.
Fact remains that as far as his ‘system’ up to that dramatic point goes, he was ‘guaranteed a winner of every race’. You could split the groups of people over as many races with as many or few runners as you like and you will still get your result.
February 1, 2008 at 22:57 #139601You knew he was fcuked when he tipped a Charlie Mann horse.
Funnily enough, that’s what I said at the time!!
February 1, 2008 at 22:59 #139602I think the notion that this is a guaranteed system is complete crap though, and surely that must be put to bed? How can a guaranteed system cater for just 1 person out of every 7776?
There is no system!!!!!! Surely that’s the whole point?
February 1, 2008 at 23:00 #139603Elements at the end were extremely misleading. Did we actually see him place the bet at Sandown? No. Why? In my opinion because the bet wasn’t placed. He went to a tote window and came back with a yello carbon copy slip which haven’t been used for a number of years now. Thirdly when he ‘won’ he picked the money up from a fixed odds bookmaker. I’ll concede the fixed odds firm was totesport but for me a bet in the Henry VIII race was never placed. She was paid out IMO from the production budget and not a bookmakers satchel.
A far better way to end it would have been to have given her her 4k back and told her not to be such a daft greedy cow.

The one who really annoyed me was the blond also filmed at Newbury.
Nevada Royale takes a crasher and she’s clearly obsessed only with the fact that she’s lost enough money for a half decent night out and a new pair of shoes.
Cow!
February 1, 2008 at 23:04 #139605Couldn’t agree more DJ and that’s how I was hoping it would end.
But instead of it ending by having Brown say there is no system, he had to get the crap in about how he had actually placed the bet on Maradina.
Surely now, a lot of less gullible people, who know little about horse racing and systems will be left thinking, "So did he have a system, how did he know Maradina would win?" – well that’s what my girlfriend said to me

February 1, 2008 at 23:10 #139606Oh, and something else (this is great this is), does anyone think he actually stood there for over nine hours tossing a coin into a bowl just to get ten consecutive heads filmed on camera?

Why didn’t he just say, "I could be stood here all day, but I’m not that daft so my crew edited a sequence showing ten consecutive heads".
As if he stood there for over nine hours

Thank God it wasn’t live – at least half of the posters on this thread would have done their brains!
February 1, 2008 at 23:13 #139609You say that RH – but as DJ pointed out, Charlie Mann horse?
We’re not that stupid collectively, surely?!

reet, and I can only agree, some good laughs though

I’m amazed at how many were getting excited on this thread by a "system"
February 1, 2008 at 23:22 #139612I don’t know why some people seem to feel that there was ever the promise of a ‘foolproof system’. It was an hour-long magic trick, with the aid of human stupidity and TV cameras. Brown said it in practically as many words himself that it was all based on purely the belief in a foolprof system that allowed the show any momentum at all. The fact that some feel hard done to by the lid being lifted only proves his point. He is merely a psychological magician, and he must be bloody good at it if he managed to get a racing forum discussing the programme when horse racing was no more than a stage for him in this instance.
All that being said, what were the chances of one of the races picked out being as dramatic as Joe Lively’s novice chase at Newbury!
February 1, 2008 at 23:25 #139613Friggo – well posted, and you’re right, Joe Lively’s win did add something to the show, you can imagine how that would have looked to a ‘non racing’ viewer.
Not so entirely enjoyable for a racing fan’s perspective regarding Nevada’s run though, but as you say, racing was just the stage, not the priority.
February 1, 2008 at 23:32 #139618Anyone going into a betting shop tomorrow?
The first thing you will here will be;
8/11 – Did you watch "The System" last night?
5/4 – What a load of sh1t that programme was last night
12/1 – Joe Lively has been cut for the Sun Alliance folling his impressive victory last night
14/1 – I bet you I can spin a coin and make it land on heads ten times
66/1 – Hi, I’m Derren Brown, to here my selections, please phone 0898…..Mike
February 1, 2008 at 23:33 #139619Jeez, guys, it was just a TV show.
He’s repeatedly said he’s not a psychic and he’s fairly open about where he gets his techniques from.
Taken in this context, it was clear that there was going to be a trick to what he did.
Yes, the feelgood ending was a bit much, but I’d rather see that than have him turn to her, say "we’ll you’re fecked now, aren’t you", and then just go home to his big mansion, leaving her to pick up the pieces of her life.
It was fun TV and that’s all.
Steve
PS The idea that this show is going to lead to scammers fleecing the public is daft beyond belief. The fact that this program will be discussed up and down the country will protect many people who didn’t already know of this trick.
