nice to see racing on all the news chanels and splashed everywhere for good reasons for a change. now i know its the queen celebrations this weekend but by being at epsom today the publicity was surperb, we had good racing 50/1 outsiders winning the fav winning the derby something for everyone what was translating over from the tv was that everyone was having an excellent time, and hopefully new people would have watched and been attracted to the greatest sport bar none
June 3, 2012 at 11:26 #406583Predictable headlines in the papers today, with several going with "And We’re Orf" and including coverage of the Queen’s visit to Epsom.
Entirely predictable, too, that the BBC’s Nicholas Witchell was falling over himself to highlight the anti-monarchist protests right at the beginning of his report.
I’m amazed, looking at the TV schedules, at how sparse the BBC’s Jubilee coverage tomorrow is. On BBC1, there’s a repeat of the Prince Charles tribute to the Queen, followed by a repeat of Britain’s Lost Routes with Griff Rhys Jones and another repeat of the Queen’s Palaces programme on Buckingham Palace with Fiona Bruce. Then, appropriately, it’s Pointless.
There is, obviously, the Diamond Jubilee Concert in the evening.
On the Tuesday, the carriage procession coverage is from 1.30 to 3.45pm on BBC1 but ITV have got all-day Jubilee coverage from 8.30am to 4pm, presented by Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham, following up their successful Royal Wedding partnership.
Strange that ITV is making the running.
I’m certainly not a great royalist and I live in what must be the most miserable street in Britain, with not a single piece of bunting or a single flag to be seen anywhere.June 4, 2012 at 18:04 #406879BBC also have coverage of the Service of Thanksgiving at the Abbey in the morning, starting around 9.15am iirc.
You can’t cover events that aren’t on. What other major Jubilee events are there today except for the concert tonight? Yes, there’s the pic-nic in Buckingham Palace Gardens, but that’s not really good for long term tv coverage.
Shame to see Philip working for the opposition, but now he’s freelance I guess it’s a case of who pays the most. He started out his career as a booking clerk for BBC Radio’s Outside Broadcast Unit. Often used to contact him to make a booking when we wanted to do an OB on Radio 4.
June 4, 2012 at 21:46 #406911It’s going to be Sir Gary Barlow, at this rate, judging by the Diamond Jubilee concert on TV.
I thought he was going to hold the Queen’s hand as he brought her out on to the stage.
You certainly couldn’t make it up that Cheryl Cole was standing next to the Queen for the National Anthem. Cheryl on one side and Camilla on the other.
Could well be Dame Clare Balding as well, based on the Epsom coverage and then her popping up on the BBC’s messing-about-on-the-water coverage from the Thames the next day….June 5, 2012 at 16:54 #406994All of us who love horse-racing already knew that Her Maj is a superbly knowledgable and keen supporter of the sport. Now many other people know too, and that cannot be a bad thing.
Our Queen is the best ambassador we could possibly have, and surely, by the number of mentions it’s had this weekend, must bring interest from new directions. It’s all good publicity

Have to say, despite her efforts to disguise her feelings, it’s been so apparent that she feels slighty lost without her beloved husband at this time of celebration, and I want to wish Philip all best wishes for a fast recovery from his illness. Long may he continue to make us smile with his candid observations!
June 5, 2012 at 19:58 #407013Never mind Dame Clare Balding, it now transpires that she has been mistaken for the Queen.
It was reported today: "BBC presenter Clare Balding was mistaken for the Queen by many spectators at the river pageant.
"Miss Balding was aboard the Royal Rowbarge Gloriana as it led the flotilla through the downpours along the Thames.
"Wearing a long opal green coat, she continually waved at the spectators on the river banks in between carrying out interviews.
"Scores of visitors to social networking sites told how they were fooled into thinking she was the Queen because of the poor visibility."
Clare Balding being mistaken for the Queen. Now I’ve heard everything.
Meanwhile, interesting to see all the criticism of the BBC’s shambolic and dumbed-down coverage of the pageant. I didn’t see the coverage, apart from a few minutes featuring Clare Balding, but I can’t believe they used such lightweight, ill-informed people as Fearne Cotton, Tess Daly and the awful Matt Baker, who disgraced himself by referring to the Queen as "Her Royal Highness" and not "Her Majesty".
The whole thing became a bumbling version of the One Show, it would seem. Sophie Raworth surpassed even Lesley Graham for grinning like a Cheshire Cat. Where’s David Dimbleby when you need him?June 6, 2012 at 19:31 #407136What a most wonderful, gracious, kindhearted woman. It is so nice to have a role model at her age, which is what she is,to all of us.Her smile , her stature, her independent bearing seem so noble in this less than precious world we live in.
