The New Lion will be running in the colours of JP McManus from now on. I like to see different coulors/owners so I think it is a pity. At least JP isn’t scared to run several of his horses against each other. Dan Skelton will still be training him.
I wonder what price has been paid for The New Lion? Caldwell Potter went voor 740.000. I imagine this one will be over a million?
January 5, 2025 at 12:41 #1717571Phew! When I saw a thread about The New Lion I thought he was out of Cheltenham.
It’s always good to see different owners winning the top races. But at least JP keeps his horses with the original trainer.
Yes, JP isn’t frightened of running his horses against each other. But if having two thought to be Champions in the making… Would there not be an overwhelming urge to split them – when there are three Grade 1 Novice Hurdles? That might work in The New Lion’s favour, might not. JP has Kaid D’Authie and Kel Histoire who could yet develop into top novices. If one of them looks like needing 2 1/2 and only 2 1/2 miles…
Value Is EverythingJanuary 5, 2025 at 14:31 #1717583According to the Post Mr Yeats he has a bonus interest in the horse going forward. So perhaps the price is not so eye watering.
January 5, 2025 at 22:24 #1717614A promising horse that AMO Racing haven’t bought………
January 6, 2025 at 13:15 #1717627JP quite frankly has so many horses (at most levels but especially for handicaps) that it would be a logistical nightmare to try and seperate them to any degree – easier just to let them all run in the races their respective trainers feel they are most suitable for and if that means being mobbed handed then so be it…..better chance of winning the race that way too.
Just have to ensure that they have enough different coloured caps to go around when they do go mobbed handed
January 6, 2025 at 14:21 #1717630Anyone know why the ex owner of The New Lion is pulling out of the sport?
The more I know the less I understand.
January 6, 2025 at 18:25 #1717645RTB, I think it was written somewhere that its due to prize money and the way owners are treated.
He did spend 620K on a horse that did nothing, Jumps prize money is pathetic for what owners have to go through. If I remember correctly in 2023 at Kempton the owner who won the last race at a jumps meeting was upset as the bar closed 30 mins later. No time to enjoy the occasion!
January 6, 2025 at 21:49 #1717655Thanks for that Landafar seems racing is really shooting itself in the foot.
The more I know the less I understand.
