    Here’s my two penn’orth:

    Perfect ground for him.

    He’s on the way up; they’re on the way doon.

    Nevertheless, it wasn’t the Gold Cup, so none would have been at their peak, presumably.

    A brilliant jumper, too. Taken to the well too often for his constitution, last year against other good horses.

    I should have said, "treading water" or "on their way doon".

    Beef or Salmon may have improved a little this year, but I think it’s likely to be a kind of brief, swan-song improvement, like an old sprinter, (whose name escapes me at the moment), who posted a faster time than ever this year, before dropping down the race-grade hierarchy.<br>
