I’m underwhelmed by the festival these days; too many championship races, too easy for the big players to dodge each other, the pernicious effect on the rest of the season. But the Gold Cup never disappoints; the jewel of NH racing, demanding that unique blend of athleticism, speed, stamina, and courage, and this year’s race looks particularly competitive, so many uncertainties. Will GDC stay? Will BMG act on the course? Will Ahoy Senor jump well enough? Is APT back to form?
That moment, half-way down the back straight on the 2nd circuit, as one commentator put it, ‘now we’re entering the torture chamber.’
