Not stating the obvious but punters should be wary of backing favourites whose best form is on soft good to soft. It will be rattling good going and you can expect a few surprises. Order of St George doesn’t do his best on firm but I think his class will see him go close. A lot of races in Ireland recently have been on soft going so he wary of horses like brother bear who skooshed up in very soft conditions last time. I can see the likes of murillo and declaration of peace loving the ground and if you want to back them do it early as would think coolmore will be putting the cash down on them. Ardhoomey at a good price could run well in the King’s stands and I expect roly poly to go very close later on in the week if the going stays the same.

Have they watered though and if so how much? Going is a guessing game nowadays I’m afraid.

I don’t see brother bear having a problem with the ground. he won last time despite the ground not being great for him.

Well it seems I was wrong, either that or the bear just wasn’t good enough.

Slightly worrying that the ground is so quick for alpha centauri later in the week, think trainer expressed doubts about her running on quick ground.

As I said the going in Ireland had been soft or worse when most of the Ascot runners ran last time. The huge improvement in Lancaster bomber was totally due to the ground. Surprised there wasn’t more outsiders winning.

I’d describe going as Firm on the first day – with course records – but am in no doubt it was fair across the course.
Can understand why they watered – could’ve got dangerously hard – but watering was not even judged by draw advantage over the straight course.

I presume thunder storms missed Ascot?

Windsor and Maidenhead Met Office yellow warning in the area:
“A band of heavy, thundery showers is expected to move from west to east on Thursday morning. Some places will miss these, but where they do occur there is potential for heavy downpours producing sudden localised flooding of homes and businesses and disruption to power supplies from lightning strikes”.

Noticeable that the Irish runners, apart from Aiden of course, didn’t have a great ascot. Jessica Harringtons two favs got beat and a few other disappointments. Obviously need to watch the going the next time these horses run as should it be good, good to soft then I would expect better runs forom the Irish horses.
