Anyone who read the Newmarket 2000 Guineas thread regularly will have seen that I warned against backing Caravaggio for that race. Not only that but I also had a general bad feeling about the horse since his final start.
Bookmakers started to ease him out for our Guineas and 18/1 told the story before he was eventually withdrawn from the field, however, the layers kept him at the head of the betting for the French Guineas and Commonwealth Cup.
On 2nd May I read that everything was tickety boo with Caravaggio and that he remained on target for a tilt at the French Guineas. Today however, I see that he has disappeared from the betting and stable companion Orderofthegarter is now the narrow favourite for the race. So, what has happened to Caravaggio then?
Are they stalling for time with him? Will he continue to be aimed at races and then not show up? It has to be a concern for me.
I backed Brametot for the French Guineas, he won from what looked an impossible position last time and trainer Jean-Claude Rouget said that the horse is a completely different racer this season. He’s a hold up horse and he finished terrifically last time.
National Defense is another obvious contender. Beaten by Al Wukair last time, his conqueror ran an excellent race at Newmarket and his chance looks solid.
I must admit that the Rouget form has not picked up as well as I would have wanted after a virus led to some of his stable being sick and two horses actually dying from the infection.
Where is Caravaggio though?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 8, 2017 at 13:02 #1300002Paddy Power have push Caravaggio out to 5’S in the Commonwealth and Blue Point into 3’s
Caravaggio was a strong, fast, early two year old the size of a tank and it wouldn’t surprise me if either he was a fast maturing type that has made little progress since or with him not running at the back end of last season whatever problem he did have he’s not fully back to his best or where they would like him to be yet.
The Commonwealth is on the 23rd of June so time still for Aiden to get a run into him but the signs and vibes can’t be good at this stage.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
May 8, 2017 at 17:16 #1300044That’s a real pity regards Caravaggio. So looking forward to seeing him as I think he looks a brilliant sprinter in the making. Such a superb looking horse.

He’s being aimed at a 3yo sprint race at Naas in 2 weeks time.
May 8, 2017 at 19:15 #1300070That’s a shame, I was looking forward to getting a look at Caravaggio over a mile.
I like Rivet in this, I feel the race will really suit and Haggas has come out and said that the colt’s come on for his run in the Craven.

Isn’t it highly odd that he is still not quoted for the race though Nathan?. He has been favourite for it for long enough and Paddy Power usually have a fix on Ballydoyle moves before other firms.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

May 10, 2017 at 11:21 #1300233Aidan said to Racing UK that a decision on Caravaggio would be made by Tuesday of this week, the trainer added that the colt may yet go sprinting. It doesn’t sound like they know where they are going with him really and, for me, that’s always a bad sign.
In the French 1000 Guineas, John Gosden’s Dabayah is out due to scoping unsatisfactorily. This leaves Senga as the 7/4 Favourite with Paddy Power.
Senga is my biggest horse in France this season. I took her at 4/1 for the French 1000 and 13/2 for the Prix Diane. I think she can do the double. I would still take her at 7/4 if not on already and I believe she would have won our Guineas if she had run there.
I am not as confident on Brametot because of the Rouget form but Senga is a Nap for me.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 10, 2017 at 20:17 #1300289With you on Senga Stevie – she has a big year in front of her. Hoping to see Orderofthegarter on Sunday as well. I have a feeling he is the best miler at Ballydoyle…….. What do you think?

I am not convinced by Orderofthegarter yet Joni.
I fancied him last time but I feel Taj Mahal is a bit of a cuddy as a yardstick to be honest.
Taj Mahal was a rank disappointment on debut and he has now run ten times and his only win was in an all-weather handicap at Dundalk, off a mark of 86.
Taj Mahal later went on to place in some better quality races but I feel they were not strong races by any means. For me, his peak rating of 108 is totally fanciful.
Taj Mahal went on next time and was 4/7 Fav in a four runner affair at Gowran. He was narrowly beaten there and you would be a bit worried by that but the horse who beat him was rated 81 and that sort of result makes grim reading for me.
Judging by his huge number of entries at every distance from a mile to a mile and a half, it seems they are not sure where they really want to go with Orderofthegarter and I wouldn’t have to think too long to compose a list of colts that I feel could thump Taj Mahal.
The Gurkha was well up to it last season and I dare say if Cliffs Of Moher does the business, punters will flock to Orderofthegarter but I am just not in love with the form. Taj Mahal seems like last year’s Shogun, a horse tried way above his actual talent, and a lay for me every time he ran.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 10, 2017 at 21:40 #1300304You could be right – Taj Mahal is certainly not one to be trusted. We still don’t know which of O’Brien’s will actually line up but I’m pretty sure we won’t be seeing Caravaggio.

May 10, 2017 at 22:39 #1300312Aidan said this evening that Orderofthegarter is a definite runner. A decision is to be made in the morning regarding Caravaggio and Whitecliffsofdover. Aidan said Caravaggio is showing such speed in his work that they are favouring the sprinting route instead, starting off in the Lacken Stakes a week later.

They always knew Caravaggio had speed. They said last year that he was the fastest they had ever had, doing 45mph up the gallops. This is not something they can have just discovered about the horse.
“News just in, Scat Daddy colt is quite speedy”
The Lacken Stakes is a Group 3 and having said some time ago that Caravaggio was ready to hit the Guineas without the need for a prior run, it seems some back track to be going for a group 3 now.
This stinks to me but hey ho, each to their own.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 12, 2017 at 12:54 #1300454Well, it was an open secret that Caravaggio wasn’t going to run.
Orderofthegarter is very weak in the betting. After opening at 7/2, he is now 13/2 with Paddy Power.
Brametot is 3/1 Favourite with the same firm. Peace Envoy is 10/1.
National Defense is 5/1 but the Marrek-Head stable are not really going this year, albeit they did have a recent winner.
I am hoping Brametot can buck the trend and actually provide me with a winner. Hope I don’t jinx the horse.
Brametot will be held up and will try to come late and fast.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

May 12, 2017 at 14:47 #1300474I assume Heffernan is on board because he gets on well with the colt but like Steve said he’s out to 13/2 in a place and that’s intriguing.
