JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial (Registered As The Finesse Juvenile Hurdle) (Grade 2)

    5123 Akula (IRE) 49 4 – M H Tompkins
    3 Empire Levant (USA) 45 4 – P F Nicholls
    31-5211 Grandouet (FR) 7 4 – N J Henderson
    Head Hunted 4 – C J Mann
    F12 Indian Daudaie (FR) 83 4 – P F Nicholls
    4 Lapin Garou (FR) 10 4 – Nick Williams
    11 Local Hero (GER) SP
1 Maoi Chinn Tire (IRE) 92 4 – Jennie Candlish
    31 Mark Twain (IRE) 16 4 – K C Bailey
    11022 Meetings Man (IRE) SP
    6213 Smad Place (FR) 21 4 – A King
    1 Third Intention (IRE) 45 4 – C L Tizzard

Akula was somewhat flattered by his 3rd to Sam Winner and would be a big surprise if winning this.

Empire Levant ran well enough in his first race but will need to improve bundles to win it. However he is trained by PN so that’s not too much to expect. Should be there at the finish.

Grandouet At time of writing not expected to run but he won so easily the other day Nicky might be tempted. The race he won the other day told them nothing and curiosity might get the better of them. Originally the plan was the Fred Winter and having beat nothing they still can’t be sure he’s good enough for the Triumph so who knows.

Indian Daudaie Haven’t a clue how good he is. Shock winner of a fairly moderat hurdle race at Autille before finishing runner up beaten a long way in a hot grade 1 race. His French trainer is no mug nor is he a stranger to Grade 1 races so he may not be a wrold beater. Take a huge leap of faith for me to back him in this.

Head HuntedWas a 2 mile handicapper on the flat and will probably end up a 3 mile handicapper over fences in time. Charlie Mann wishes.

Lapin Garou Needs to improve a ton to get involved here and won’t be sighted if he turns up at all.

Local Hero Loved this horse the minute I laid eyes on him. He might not turn out as good as Binocular but he gave me the same sort of buzz as he did way back then.

AP for those who don’t alredy know tried to buy him for JP right after his first race and he recommended to SG that he run him in this. I think he could just be abit special, win this and go on to win the Triumph. I’ve already backed him for the big one and won’t be opposing him here even if Grandouet turns up.

Meetings Man is a complete mystery. One minute he’s on the all weather flying along at 40 mph over 6 firlongs then pops up in a 2 mile hurdle race and amazingly hacks up like he’s been running over hurdles for year. Despite staring at 200/1 there appears to have been no fluke about his win but it must be said the class of the oppostion that was left to beat, after Grandouet ran away with his jockey and blew up, was pretty poor. I’ve had an interest in him for the Triumph at huge odds simply because he could be anything. If he were to beat Local hero and the rest I wouldn’t be complaing too much.

Mark Twain is going the right way having won really easily at Wetherby after being withdrawn for Local Hero’s last race. A lot to do to catch up with Gandouet on their last meeting but he’s been steady away and that run probably is worth the paper it’s written on. He looks alot better than that and could go really well here.

Meetings Man Poor second to Meetings Man will need to sprout wings cant see Micky Hammond running him unless the owner insists.

Smad Place I’m not surprised Alan King thinks this horse could still win the Triumph Hurdle. If you want to get a good horse beaten send him to Chepstow on soft to heavy ground and your wish will most likley come true. He was really impressive the time before last despite the fact he beat a grossly overrated PN horse. Definitely one for the short list.

Third Intention Is hard to fault. He ran on like a tiger and beat Titan De Sarti after he looked a certainty at the 2nd last. Titan De Sarti disappointed again the other day again but he is said to make Binocular look slow at home so he’s obviously very talented but quirky as they come.

Despite that I think Third Intention comes here with the best form in the race and most likely he or Smad Place will go off favourite. He looks the type who will relish the uphill finish if it comes down to a fight but I’m more than hopefull Local Hero will seee out the trip well have too much toe for him.

Agree with you (for once!) that Local Hero will take all the beating in this. With no obvious front-runner, he should have too much pace for Smad Place. I’ll be hoping that those nice bookie chaps over-react to the (likely) defeat of Alan King’s grey and I’ll then lump on him e/w for the Triumph, where the end-to-end gallop will be far more to his liking.

I think Maoi Chinn Tire will take this…

Form is every bit as good (if not better IMO) than the first 2 in the market..

I think people are writing it off because it won at 200/1 on debut and it’s trained by Jennie Candlish…

Local Hero for me – 2/1 seems generous to me – Can’t get too stuck in but hopefully a great start to the Cheltenham card
