2-0 up just before half time in a (relatively) meaningless pre-World Cup friendly and the commentators are already talking about ‘how good their World Cup could be’.
Now, as a Scot, I’m going to battle hard to try and not be negative about the English challenge (it’s one of our nation’s less attractive traits) but your media do kind of make it difficult for us.
May 24, 2010 at 19:53 #296752Make that 2-1 and slightly stunned commentators – ‘as many questions as there are answers’ now.

Hardly coming home, this isn’t Britian anymore with all the immigrants.
May 25, 2010 at 05:22 #296788As an England fan, it annoys me too. But "The English media"?
You’re (so far) only moaning about the ITV commentators, which doesn’t quite mean "The English media" surely?
The English media would include national newspaper sports journalists, radio sports commentators and all the other assorted BBC/SKY/ESPN/ etc. commentators). (Although I’d agree that many – too many – of these would be saying much the same.)
The ITV commentator has a particularly annoying trait of feeling he just has to keep talking no matter what; he just doesn’t know when to shut up. I always turn the sound off when watching ITV games.
I’ve not read the Tuesday nationals yet, and doubtless some of them will be analysing last night’s performance in relation to the forthcoming World Cup. Some may say last night was a plus, others (justifiably) will say that there are major shortcomings. Although we know it’s coming, it’s just a wee bit premature to say that the rambling of a particularly garrulous ITV commentator (and panellists) amounts to "the English media" overstating England’s chances.May 25, 2010 at 06:06 #296789Just had a quick gander at the
Telegraph
Times
and
Independent
football pages. All agree that England have serious flaws that need to be addresed to be serious World Cup contenders. Don’t know what the tabloids will say but would imagine it’ll be much the same.
What the Scots have to realise is that newspapers and commentators when musing over the World Cup will inevitably discuss England’s chances. This doesn’t amount to fawning propaganda that England are in any way certainties to win. (There may well be one or two exceptions to this.)
A racing journalist may not fancy a short-priced horse for a big-race, but when writing about that race, would nonetheless comment upon that horses’ positives as well as negatives. Surely that’s what our football media are doing. If the racing journo is right, then how can a Scot criticise a footy journo for mentioning England’s chances? They are in the finals after all!
But the Scots see it differently perhaps.May 25, 2010 at 06:24 #296790You are of course correct Insomniac. But the annoying ones really ARE annoying though.
May 25, 2010 at 17:25 #296883Two big worries for England:-
Rooney looks about 75% of the player he was before the first injury.
The right back position has always been a problem. It is all very well making forays up the pitch but Johnson is clueless when it comes to defending.
May 26, 2010 at 12:39 #296977If the scots didnt spend al their time swilling tonic wine and gobbling up deep fried Topics in curry sauce, then they would be at the bloody event rather than sitting at home whinging about the heroes from gods own country’s forthcoming triumphant world cup

We Scots are a united nation – we ALL want England to lose !
