    https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/may/26/bbc-announces-raft-of-closures-cbbc-four-online-only

I do not understand the BBC’s thinking. It revives BBC3 in a misplaced attempt to appeal to young people who do not watch television. Then proposes to scrap a channel which consistently gets higher ratings.

It is also planning to shut down its long wave radio service. I thought this was essential for the Shipping Forecast because long wave can be heard clearly around the whole of the British and Irish coasts.

    Is nothing sacred?!

A licence fee freeze is a real terms cut, exacerbated by the rising cost of energy etc of course. Something has got to go, although I’m not sure this was the right way to do it. How much does an ‘essentially archive only’ channel even cost them to run? Can’t be that much if there’s little to no money spent on new programmes.

I’m sure savings could be made elsewhere. How much do they spend on flying their sports presenters all over the world for tournaments lasting three weeks to a month and putting them up in hotels? Most of that could be done from the UK.

As far as I know commentary on lower league football matches is provided separately by the BBC region for both teams involved, surely you could have it provided by the home region only?

How much does it cost to make something like Death in Paradise which I believe is set and filmed almost entirely in the Caribbean? (I realise you can’t film that in Skeggy).

And get rid of the bloody One Show, I have no idea what it’s for and it must cost a fortune.

It has been my favourite channel for years. I knew this was coming one day but it’s still hard to take. Imo the culture secretary should be renamed the anti culture secretary. I bet she’s never even watched BBC4.

    BBC4 will be available on-line:

“CBBC, BBC Four and Radio 4 Extra will shut down and become online-only services, the corporation has said, as part of plans to close television and radio channels in order to focus on streaming services.”

If you have a “smart tv” you will be able to watch via the “iPlayer”.

Another BBC thread. Must be a reason for it.
Only until in recent years accepted as a trusted seemingly unbiased source, had good light entertainment shows, sports coverage etc, the ‘go to’ channel.

    What the hell has happened?

My opinion the referendum exposed the organisation’s political stance, and they could not stand by and let it happen without ‘getting involved’.
Just some examples they chose sides in the referendum, did not challenge or scrutinise the MPs who tried to destroy our democracy, the look on their faces when the 2019 election poll came through.

Now, their latest attempt to oust the PM, divide and disrupt the country, yet again, have all but failed.

I saw the decision to make over 75’s pay the license as a punishment for them for ever daring to vote Brexit.

And the programmes, where do you start, there’s not much worth watching nowadays. It certainly feels like the channels are not for the majority in this country anymore.
Just about everything has to have a diversity component. And choosing diversity over ability equals less quality which is where they are now.

I just don’t recognise the BBC anymore, I certainly don’t trust them anymore and it’s interesting I see more comments elsewhere with the same thinking, it’s not just me.

The BBC started going downhill when Patrick Troughton exited the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who in 1969.

Haha Ian, and look where they are on that now.

Personally, I thought when they appointed Sylvester McCoy was the start of the decline.

I don’t understand why broadcasting a channel on-line rather than via a TV aerial saves the BBC money. Surely most of the costs are in producing the programmes not in beaming them to the public by whatever medium

As for the Shipping Forecast, with modern ‘tech’ I’m far from convinced that our maritime fleet still requires it via long wave on a crackly transistor radio, and am inclined to think that like The Archers and Just A Minute it’s only still broadcast because ‘it always has been’: none so small-c conservative as Radio 4 listeners

Funny how all the things the BBC is supposedly biased against keep happening.

The over 75s licence fee wasn’t their decision, it was forced on them by the government who knew that the gullible would blame the BBC.

    “The Archers” is now unlistenable.

Is “Just A Minute” still being made without Nicholas Parsons? Unthinkable!

As for the Shipping Forecast: “Sailing By” and the forecast afterwards are an invaluable service to insomniacs.

You’re not wrong, sir – some might go further and say a culmination of the decline!

Richard, we have often said what exactly is the One Show.

Just goes off on a tangent from one subject to the other, the guests hardly come into play sometimes.

What makes me laugh though is the music. They’ve still kept the fake crowd noise or whatever it is at the end of the intro. And just before the six o’clock news they preview the programme with that fake noise, and also add in a very loud trumpet which is sounded in a frustrated anger, like it’s telling us something.

All because they lost Brexit eh?, never get over it.

The One Show predates Brexit by quite some time but that’s besides the point.

It must cost a fortune to produce that much live television hosted by expensive presenters and sending reporters all over the place. Who would miss it?

And it’s not becuase I don’t watch it, I’ve no interest in, say, Eastenders either but that’s not something I’d necessarily chuck in the bin.

Tbh, I seldom watch TV anymore and on the rare occasions I do it’s just updated versions of old formulaic programme concepts reaffirming to me that watching TV is something I already did, so been there done that.

Isn’t The One Show just a different name for Nationwide from back in the day?

A hospital drama, a Police drama, soap operas, old ideas endlessly recycled.

I do hope the licence fee gets abolished at some stage – I resent paying for a product I never asked for and seldom use.

Strange that so many people think that the BBC has a left wing bias because I’m left of centre/liberal but I and all of my political friends find that the only news worth watching is Ch4 (surprise surprise, look what the government are planning for that). No one gave Farage a bigger platform than the BBC. They gave Johnson the last word in the brexit debate even though Ruth Davidson had put up much more sensible, convincing reasons for remaining in the EU. Not surprising that Johnson was applauded and cheered for his three word meaningless soundbites. I’ve only just started to watch Question time because they were planting pro brexit supporters in the programmes. People I know (fairly moderate politically) could never get onto the programme but some people were to be seen in several programmes. Oakshott managed to get on many programmes, too. If the BBC have such a left wing bias how come they give a platform to such loathsome far right campaigners. The only programme I can think of with a left wing bias is HIGNFY but even that has to sneak in negative comments about Keir for the sake of balance.

My word moehat like the nags you must be blinkered.
10 left comments to one on the right and you are up in arms against it like the right are never allowed to say a word.
If they did say a word it was embarrassing as the interviewers could not help themselves arguing and interrupting any leave or right replies.

    That’s complete nonsense Moehat

Don’t know where to start but who has a right to be in the qt audience and who are you to say they are “plants”

I was in the audience many years back and there is no doubt that it’s rigorous and tough to get an invite. As it happens mate I went with was left of centre too

And the farage thing has already been explained. Like him or not he represented as many if not more voters than the libdems who got probably more representation than ukip. Isn’t this about the third time been over this one here?

I’ve no time for farage but this is nonsense
