Thanks for taking the time to do that Andrew, it will be interesting to see if teams recruit more than two players and how many overseas players that the teams take with them for the next champions league.

January 12, 2010 at 22:04 #269543It will indeed, though to the best of my knowledge, none have done yet. But we are firmly in the age of the freelance cricketer. The current Big Bash tournament down under is littered with big names, the runaway leaders South Australia have both Afridi and Kieron Pollard in their middle order.
Tomorrow, its more of the same from Bangladesh, with the final between India and Sri Lanka likely to be settled at the toss (as it was on Sunday, when woke up late but still managed to get 1.77 about India). Set your alarm for 7:45, see which team has won the toss, lump on them, go back to bed.
The T20 game down under tomorrow is an interesting one. Queensland with Andrew Symonds and the recently signed Daniel Vettori travel to Sydney to face New South Wales, the Champions League winners, but currently bottom of the table. NSW are without steadying influence Katich or the other likely captain Stuart Clark, so Moises Henriques has been leading them, not particularly well, it appears. Queensland went down only narrowly to Victori on D/L, lost to South Australia (as everyone else has done) and come into this match on form after disposing of Tasmania. Away from home they may be, but I’ll back them at odds against.

You may have stumbled across a good system there Andrew, i practically like the go back to bed part of it.

January 13, 2010 at 21:20 #269724Unfortunately didn’t get to put a bet on until Sri Lanka had taken a couple of early wickets, but still a win is a win. Pleasing to see Queensland win as well.
Tomorrow’s two Tests are fascinating, but I couldn’t find much of value in the England game, despite staring at the prices for ages, so I’m going to be backing Pakistan against Australia, mainly on the strength of their bowling. Mohammed Aamer is back and the Aussies struggled against him previously. Faisal Iqbal and Misbah are also out, so the batting has been freshened up. Pakistan have had their moments in this series and should have won in Sydney and despite their monumental cock-up in that game, do not deserve to be 5-1 for this.

January 16, 2010 at 23:58 #270343Had another tenner on Somerset for the Twenty/20 this morning at 9’s and have just checked oddschecker and seen the 2010 20/20 champs are now 8’s, do you think i’ve got them on the run with the power of my pound or is it the fact Tendulkar wont be playing for Middlesex this season?

March 24, 2010 at 23:07 #285447I’m getting worried about Andrew Hughes, the missing person’s service showed up nothing, The Queen told me Andrew had left the tea party months ago and she hasn’t seen him since, he’s not been named in either of Walsall’s 1st or 2nds teams, only the IPL started the other week yet we’ve had no updates/info or tips from Mr Cricket, i wanted to know how Kieron Pollard was getting on in his warm up before heading to the South West to smash Somerset to Twenty/20 glory, but nothing.
Andrew if you are out there let us know that your alright.

March 25, 2010 at 18:12 #285553Checkout "the long handle" on cricinfo for his frequent views. They prove he’s still alive and breathing!
March 25, 2010 at 22:36 #285616Cheers Roland, perhaps i could leave him a message on there telling him to get his arssse back on TRF as the proper cricket that is the county cricket season is just a few rain drops away and it would be great to get his views on a few wagers I’ve lined up.
Have you watched any of the action over in Bangladesh Roland?
Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 26, 2010 at 13:03 #285698I managed to watch most of it Nathan, its strange watching a game when you’re rooting for both sides. There’s something about the Bangles that just makes you will them to do better. Their batting is definitely improving.
Your man Kieswetter looks like a shoe in now for the limited overs side.
Other obsevations of the tour include question marks about Cooks captaincy, though i have a feeling he’s ready to take his batting to the next level. Trott was extremely unlucky in 3 of his dismissals and is the batsmen probably most under pressure at the moment. Broad was disappointing, Bresnan was not.On now to the IPL merry-go-round. I’m on Royal Challengers Bangalore to win, though whether i’ll be able to force myself through the inane "we buy any car dot com" adverts on the way to the final is another thing.

any, any, any, any, it’s irritating just reading it.
I know what you mean about Bangladesh wanting them to do well, they are at a better standard now then a few years back and will probably give us a hiding next time we face them.
I’m chuffed Kieswetter got a quick chance to show his ability he’s a confident player and i don’t think playing at that level will faze him and if he continues to improve could have a long future in the national side.

March 31, 2010 at 20:45 #286801Good evening all. Apologies for deserting the ship in recent weeks.
Roland mentions the We Buy Any Car advert – a particular dislike of mine, given that I am indeed trying to sell my car at the moment and that just reminds me that I should be doing something about it. The IPL forces you to sit through all manner of trash, the other two most irritating have to be the Halifax advert (have they ever made a good one?) and that hair-dyeing one in which yer man goes for an interview at a tie company and gets the job because his daughter told him to colour his hair or something.
The thing about the IPL is you should always assume that the best team won’t win, especially if they look like the best team at the half-way stage. By that logic, Mumbai haven’t a chance. I tipped Rajasthan at [10.0] in another place and they immediately began losing players and matches. They have turned it around since, but their squad is surely too weak, no matter how inspirational their captain. Right now I’d go for Deccan at around 8-1. They are having a bad patch, but it is impossible not to in this format and they are basically a very solid team. Roach looks particularly rapid.
As for Mr Pollard, the only thing I have seen him do so far is spend several minutes hammering his mark into the crease with a bail. He might be better off bringing a hoe (please note the spelling) rather than a bat.
Kieswetter will be keeping wicket in the Ashes or my name’s Tim Ambrose.

and then you get the adverts….

I knew there must have been another reason for Somerset’s head groundsman for over a quarter of a century to be leaving the club. Phil Frost to the Somerset chiefs "you sign that West Indian pitch wrecker and I’m off".
Nice to have you back on board the good ship TRF, Andrew. Clivex thinks I’m mad but what do you think Monty Panesar’s chances are like of being the leading wicket taker in division two of the championship?
Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 31, 2010 at 23:33 #286838Well the problem I’d have with backing Panesar is that he was up against the same group of teams last year and only managed 18 wickets. Last thing I knew, he was trying to broaden his range of deliveries with the help of Mushtaq Ahmed. If his meagre haul last time was due to experimentation then perhaps it can be overlooked.
Then again, is Northants a spin-friendly county these days? If not, maybe Hove will be more conducive. Just get the feeling with Panesar though that he is not going to run through teams.
As ever, it will depend on the odds. Couldn’t find any on Oddschecker or Betfair for that particular market. Wouldn’t want to be taking anything too short.
Nice line, Clive. But as I’ve discovered to my cost, if an Englishman ventures an opinion on the IPL, it can only mean that he is a jealous anti-Indian neo-colonialist white supremacist Modiphobe etc. etc.
The cricket is mostly awful, with flashes of nostalgia and lots and lots of sixes.
April 1, 2010 at 22:07 #287071Oddschecker has put up the prices now for top batsmen and leading wicket takers, only had a quick look but was slightly disappointed that Panesar was 9’s considering last season’s effort i thought at least a nice 16’s would be on offer. Never mind it was a nice idea.
Marcus Trescothick at 4’s could be an each/way bet to nothing.
Has Mark Ramprakash recovered from his injury at the end of last season? 7/1 could be quite big if he maintains his consistency and desire to score big or will he be stepping down the order?.

Very nicely put….and absolutely spot on
There has been a quite awful drooling over Indias "new power" in the game from some quarters. Sort of Guardian reader self flagellation stuff… Forget the petty internal politics (denying Calcutta a test for years because of some slight) and forget the vile corruption (Zimbabwe), we are supposed to be in awe of the econoimic power
But would the same people be so enchanted if it was the americans who had taken 20/20 to their hearts and thrown money at the game?
Dont think so
As for Modi. I think hes a cnt and thats that. Cant stand the bloke
April 3, 2010 at 21:57 #287379Having a browse through some of the odds and Zander De Bruyn was 25’s just to be top Somerset scorer, personally i would of had him on a par with Hildreth and Suppiah both 8’s, He’s not on the overall top runscorer market which goes down to Flintoff at 200’s so I’m going to ask for similar odds for De Bruyn who could be pushed up the order with the loss of Langer and the possible absence of Kieswetter for much of the campaign. Last season he hit 988 runs at 47.05 with 3 tons and 5 fifties from 15 innings.
