I’d noticed on betfair Warickshire were backed from evens down to 1.7 before the toss. It seems you have a Pricewise-esque type following! Unlucky with the result, they really should have finished the job.
September 1, 2009 at 23:36 #246700Not so much Pricewise as Price-unwise.
Dreadful situation at Old Trafford this evening and a good suggestion from Shane Warne – why didn’t they just bowl from one end.
Rain forecast for Sri Lanka but hopefully their covers are not full of holes. The absence of Murali is a bonus for New Zealand but the home side are obvious favourites. Of all the various top score options, Jacob Oram appeals most at 10-1 (Ladbrokes) Likely to be promoted to number 5 and hit some form in the second Test with a useful fifty. Guptil and McCullum are right out of form, Ryder has been hit and miss this tour and Taylor, whilst the obvious choice, doesn’t appeal much at 3-1.
September 2, 2009 at 00:32 #246704Absolute shambles tonight.
Presumably the players get the same match fee whether they played or not?
Why didn’t they get someone to actually try running up or even try to start the match? If it became impossible at least the spectators would be able to see that for themselves.
Perhaps the most worrying aspect was how well the crowd accepted the announcement.
September 3, 2009 at 22:34 #246962Big Jake looked like he was playing a different game to everyone else, probably croquet. He had no chance by the time he got in and this led me to do some research – crude though it was, I discovered that there is a huge disadvantage to batsmen batting lower than 4 in the order – a much more dramatic fall-off in their chances of top scoring than I had thought. A similar crude study of ODIs found the cut-off was less dramatic and occurred after 5 in the order. From now on I will bear these things in mind when wagering on the top scorer market.
For the first time in a while, I will be backing England. Putting the two teams down on paper, there really isn’t a lot between them in the fifty over game, which surprised me when I saw it in black and white – even with the absence of Flintoff and Pietersen. Ponting is missing for the moment, the coach has gone home and I’m not sure these end of season pitches in the damp will really suit the Aussies. I’ve backed England to win the First ODI on Betfair at 2.6. Haven’t dabbled in the top scorer market yet as there is some uncertainty about the line-ups for both teams and beyond that, the batting order and I won’t be able to bet tomorrow.
In the second T20 in Sri Lanka, I have gone for Jayawardene at 9-2 (Stan James) to be top Sri Lankan scorer – he has been in even better touch than Dilshan and was unlucky to be run-out by a direct hit from everyone’s favourite fatty, Jesse Ryder the other day. I’ve also gone for Ross Taylor at 3-1 (Totesport) for New Zealand as frankly there is no-one else. McCullum has been in the doldrums for ages, Ryder is not what you might call reliable and er…that’s it.
September 4, 2009 at 15:17 #247072i’m not particularly a patriot and when it comes to betting, patriotism doesn’t get a sniff but since the South African visit last summer i haven’t been able to stop myself betting on England.
Particularly in ODI, the prices have been way out of kilter (with the exception of the Indian tour), and in all forms England have been in countless winning positions even if they have gone on to lose or draw.Australias one day form is not what it once was, being beaten easily twice in a row by the saffers so I see no reason to change my position for this series.
The 2.6 has Englands chances of winning at 38% and i definitely have it closer than that.September 5, 2009 at 00:00 #247175Arse biscuits.
Some comedy batting from England. Many chuckles from the men in Zimbabwe red. Presumably Shah was practising his ballroom footwork for his post-retirement career (could be sooner than you think, Owais).
Scrappy, messy, ultimately unsatisfying, but I kind of enjoyed this game, aside from the financial outcome. The Oval is the only English ground that feels ‘international’ – agree with Greg Blewett who said it was the best atmosphere. Atherton was wrong about Edgbaston. Poky little hole full of inebriated football fans.
Good win by New Zealand, too. Sri Lanka have rather lost their way in T20 games.
I’m off for a lie down and a refreshing glass of Babycham.
September 5, 2009 at 00:24 #247183I think its probable that there may be a continued clamour about Bopara and collingwood’s inclusion who simply scored too slowly. At least Owais looks like he can score at a run a ball at the moment. His laughable athleticism though means he’ll always be mentioned for the chop in the ODI team.
Still, it was an exciting finish and game, showing that there really isn’t much between these teams.September 5, 2009 at 00:44 #247184Yes – perhaps Lord’s might be more our cup of tea, particularly if it swings.
I do think that Wright is better suited lower down the order. Rashid played well too. Actually, if they only play one spinner at Lord’s, perhaps we might get a glimpse of the future and see Swann dropped in favour of Rashid.
And today’s result should ensure England’s odds hold up, perhaps even lengthen a bit for Sunday.
September 18, 2009 at 19:50 #249288Somerset are not just a pretty face let me tell you. If Sussex lose in next weeks final Pro40 fixture and Somerset win their last match the Sabres will be champions. Sussex opponents Worcestershire.
Now Somerset are in the middle of playing Worcester in the County Championship and are giving the Royals a right good preparation practise and confidence booster so they turnover Sussex a week on Sunday. 1st innings plan let Worcester hit over 500 runs and Mitchell close to 300 so the batting department is sharper than allow the bowlers to run through Somerset’s class batting outfit at Taunton on the best surface in the country so that the Royal bowlers are on a high for the Pro40. 2nd innings plan enforcing the follow-on will now get the chance to improve fitness levels and fielding practise as Somerset bat for two days solid.
If plan fails brace yourselves for Brain Rose to tell the world how Somerset are confident of winning a trophy next season.

September 18, 2009 at 23:37 #249303It’s not all over yet. C’mon Worcester, just one win, at least!
On a different subject, Nathan, what do you think to Somerset’s chances in the Champions League next month? Is Tresco going to be there?
September 19, 2009 at 01:18 #249321Trescothick has said he will be going. I don’t know what chance Somerset will have to be honest, they have named a 15 man squad with all the main players included. They are in a group with Indian Premier League side Deccan Chargers who you will know more about them than me as i have never watched the IPL and also Trinidad & Tobago the Stanford 20/20 champs which again i didn’t watch so i have no idea on the opposition.

September 19, 2009 at 02:19 #249330Deccan were the IPL winners last year and Trinidad were the best team in the West Indies (though that was over a year ago and what they means anyway is anyone’s guess).
As counties/states/franchises don’t usually play one another in serious games like this it is a little bit of guesswork trying to establish which might be the better teams. The IPL teams, the Australians and the South Africans would probably be the strongest, but that is only a hunch.
Deccan squad includes: Adam Gilchrist, Fidel Edwards, Rohit Sharma, Andrew Symonds, Chaminda Vaas, Scott Styris and RP Singh. Oh and their former captain, VVS Laxman, but he is useless at T20. No Herschelle Gibbs, who has opted to play for Cape Cobras instead.
Trindidad & Tobago include both the Bravos (Dwayne and Darren) Lendl Simmons, Keiran Pollard, Dinesh Ramdin and the splendidly-named Dave Mohammed.
Two out of three go through, so Somerset will probably hope to beat Trinidad, although that might not be so easy. Trinidad beat Middlesex in their big money game in the Stanford debacle.
The whole thing is live on British Eurosport, by the way.
September 19, 2009 at 12:49 #249352Deccan look pretty useful then, even if Somerset fail in that group it will be a good experience for the likes of Max Waller, I’ve got high hopes for him he gets smacked for a few fours and sixes but has picked up alot of wickets in the one day games.
Thanks for British Eurosport heads up, my better half will not be happy that im watching more sport but i can blame you.
Whats your thoughts on Kieswetter being qualified to play for England from February and do you think he will get a look in?

Happy to do my bit for domestic harmony! I am still having trouble explaining why it is necessary to watch any more of the current one day series, since England aren’t any good. I have tried to point out that having watched them lose six times in a row, I can’t possibly miss the next one just in case they win.
I think Kieswetter has an excellent chance. It looks as though we are committed to playing a batsman-keeper, capable of batting at six. That is bad news for James Foster and so it looks like a straight fight between Davies and Kieswetter for the reserve keeper spot. Davies will probably get first go at it, but Kieswetter should be next in line.
We will probably know more when they choose the squad for South Africa. If they go for a fill-in like Geraint Jones or Tim Ambrose, then that probably indicates a lack of faith in Davies.
I haven’t seen Kieswetter play but he sounds like a better batsman and keeper than Prior and as such an ideal player. His age will count against him though.
Was Max Waller one of the two leg spinners who were working with Shane Warne during the interval of the Oval Test?
September 20, 2009 at 01:58 #249416Yes it was Waller and Will Beer of Sussex, after they had a bowl Warney took them off for a chat aswell and they were hanging on to his every word. Waller has had plenty of rest this season and i feel it’s because Somerset are looking after him rather than him being dropped if that makes sense.
Kieswetter is fantastic, has every shot in the book and more and his glove work has improved this year. The worry would be the step up from county cricket to facing the seasoned internationals.

September 22, 2009 at 19:09 #249687I’m impressed that Somerset have signed Murali Kartak as overseas player for next season. If Somerset are ever going to seriously challenge for the Championship then they need to start regularly taking 20 wickets at Taunton and Kartak can hopefully help do the job.
Langer will be missed but had a poor season for his standards with the bat and handed more responsibility to the other batsmen by dropping down the order in alot of the one day games. His leadership in the field will be missed the most as Somerset’s fielding has been so much better since Langer’s arrival.

September 22, 2009 at 23:37 #249719That’s an excellent signing. One of the most underrated spinners around and a step forward for a county that continue to impress.
