In all seriousness, I have the impression that most players would prefer to win the T20 (and a place in the Champions League) than the C.Championship.
I dont think the English sides are taking part in the next champions League as it clashes with the start of the 2011 domestic season.
Somerset have never won the Championship and this side is capable of winning it so if I get whiff of any of the boys giving the impression that they want the T20 over the CC then they will have me to answer to………………..

August 5, 2010 at 10:56 #311074Andrew, according to reports, staff and members at Notts were absolutely gutted at the weekend. The Championship is (by all accounts) regarding as the more prestigious tournament internally – perhaps due to the comparisons with the great Clive Rice/Richard Hadlee outfit of 1981.
However, the T20 tournament is capturing the imagination of the public far more than the Championship so you may have a point in one sense.
This split isn’t new – posthumous media superstar Brian Clough attended as much Championship cricket as he could, and is famous locally for abusing the Nottinghamshire public for their lukewarm response to the 1981 Championship win.
Hardly anyone turned up to celebrate the great achievement and there is a photograph in the archives at the Nottingham Evening Post of Clough sitting in the members pavilion entirely alone on the day the Championship was won.
Yet he was being his usual rapacious self – JPL Sunday League cricket (and the B & H/Natwest Trophy) at Notts that season was well attended – as T-20 is now.
August 5, 2010 at 19:17 #311175You’re absolutely right, Nathan, that had passed me by entirely, I think I must have assumed that the usual bluster from the ECB would be short-lived.
Maybe we are still in transition and there are still many at counties like Notts who regard the Championship as the pinnacle. I think the younger players will take a different view.
There was a similar picture a year or two back of the Sussex team on an open-top bus parade along the seafront – to the complete indifference of commuters and shoppers.
And whereas the original limited overs competitions were reluctantly-adopted money-making formats to enable the perennially bankrupt counties to stagger on for another decade or two, T20 Indian style has the potential to subvert the entire game. A good performance in the FPT Final could land you an IPL contract and money will always trump glory.
August 11, 2010 at 09:51 #312158Notts bowling attack looks a bit tasty for finals day. Not a bad masterplan that Broad, Swann, Sidebottom and Nannes. It’s set for an explosion with Notts secret weapons against Somerset’s weapons of mass destruction Trescothick, Kieswetter, Pollard and Trego.
My silly supervisor only asked me if I want to do some overtime on Saturday.
I don’t think so…..

August 14, 2010 at 22:40 #312805Well done Hampshire…..
Pollard was a huge miss in the field without his bowling probably cost an extra 12 runs or so but no excuses as Hampshire were without Lumb, Pothas, Pieterson, Mascarenhas and Jones. Will make amends in the CB40..

August 15, 2010 at 16:16 #312914Thrilling game, the tension at the end was near unbearable, especially when they had to mark out the lines at either end. Just seemed that Somerset weren’t quite themselves, perhaps 95%. Pollard’s injury could well have been the difference
August 23, 2010 at 07:49 #314324In a sick way i’m quite looking forward to the circus tonight. I feel sorry for the position of the England team as no matter what, they’re going to get stick, they’ll have to lick Stanford ar*e whilst getting rodgerred by the media.

August 29, 2010 at 19:32 #315096Three players involved in match fixing?
A Test match thrown in Sydney?
Asian Cup shenanigans?
Captains forced out because they didn’t like what was going on?
Life bans all round?Just another day in Pakistan cricket.
August 30, 2010 at 10:07 #315130It goes to show just how poor England have batted in the series, how many runs would Strauss and Pietersen have scored if these players wanted to get them out?
Feel a bit sorry for Pakistan, their reputation will get even worse on Thursday when Somerset 2nds give them a hiding.

August 30, 2010 at 12:45 #315153I confess I’m struggling to understand why a British police force is attempting to make a case of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers, when a) said bookmakers are resident in Asia and b) said bookmakers are themselves illegal.
Then again, these ‘economic crime’ units all seem to be much keener on headlines than on police work.

August 30, 2010 at 14:51 #315163Richie Benaud used to say "only bet on animals with four legs". Did our Australian friend know something we didn’t?
Value Is EverythingAugust 30, 2010 at 17:26 #315182What type of bets were these guys placing? I really don’t understand Can you place a bet on when a no ball is bowled? Can someone please explain…Thanks
Crizzy
August 30, 2010 at 18:30 #315186August 30, 2010 at 18:37 #315187As Alan suggested earlier, these bets would most likely have been placed with bookies in South Asia, where bookmaking is illegal. I haven’t come across any such betting opportunities with bookies in the UK and I would imagine they aren’t allowed to offer them, given that the time and number of no-balls, like throw-ins in football, can be so easily manipulated.
It is a good question, why are the police investigating the potential defrauding of bookmakers who are based overseas and are themselves outside the law? I don’t know, but to the extent that it is adding extra heat to the issue, I am glad they are. Hopefully there will be tough action taken this time.
