I’m having a bash at Pete Trego to be Somerset’s top runscorer in today’s match v Essex. Most firms have him at about 9/2 but a few have him at 8’s and I’m about 90% sure he will be opening the batting and after a slow start to the season a break with the England Lions seems to have done his confidence some good as he came back to open the innings and batted though to the end.

July 14, 2010 at 22:10 #306506Well done my better half, this is the second thing she has impressed me with recently the other was picking Spain out of the sweep-stake. Anyway whilst I was slaving away in the kitchen cooking a korma She was only channel hopping earlier and came across some Welsh channel on Sky 134. What was on? I hear you ask…. Only Glamorgan v Somerset and even better there was no Allot, Atherton, Knight or Cork just some Welsh speaking old fellas who when I managed to find the subtitles were not best pleased with their teams effort’s.

July 18, 2010 at 19:04 #307152That’s an excellent discovery, I could do with a break from Atherton, Allot et al myself.
Congratulations to Somerset on topping the South group, great effort after an ordinary start. A home draw against Northants, if I understand correctly and that shouldn’t be difficult.
I’ve decided to support Worcestershire once again tomorrow in the Clydesdale Bank thingy. Yes, they are rubbish and yes they are away to Sussex, but then Sussex have been awful in the T20 of late and the return of Yardy and Wright does not seem to have made a difference. Purely on the odds of 3.25, I’ve backed Worcester with Totesport.
My other bet this weekend was to lay the draw in the First Test at Galle, at slightly less than evens. Result? Sri Lanka finish the first day 256-2. I was thinking that it is bound to turn for Murali’s last game, but it had better start deteriorating fast.
July 18, 2010 at 21:10 #307171I hope Worcester destroy Sussex tomorrow I will be cheering them on
.
Sussex even although are in a bad run of form they are a side full of talent and have a slight hoodoo over Somerset so I was delighted that they were paired against Notts in the quarter finals as Notts are the other side I’m a little nervous about.
Somerset will/should be happy to be up against Northants but will have to be careful. Today’s performance was more than a tad embarrassing and although Somerset will have the stronger team it only takes an outstanding performance from Vaas or Hall and it would be curtains. Pollard will have gone home by then and will be replaced by Cameron White who will hold his own batting but to my surprise Pollard has given Alfonso Thomas a run for his money in the bowling department and will be missed.

July 19, 2010 at 19:57 #307348Yes, Pollard’s bowling has been an unexpected bonus. I thought he’d be expensive, but he’s done well.
I may possibly give up watching cricket anyway. Second day at Galle washed out, draw looking inevitable and just turned on television to find the men in very very dark green 92-7.
Hove looks an absolute dump, by the way. Hadn’t noticed those flats at the one end before.
July 21, 2010 at 08:05 #307683India following on. Your in with a shout now Andrew.!

July 21, 2010 at 09:27 #307691Got to love Murali!
Interesting odds in the top Pakistan batsman market – 4.2 for ‘Any Other Batsman’ on Betfair last night, but that 4.2 includes Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik, so have had a small amount on at those odds.
July 22, 2010 at 21:31 #307997FFS what a bad day.
It had to rain just as Somerset had Kent by the goo-lies.! Then to make things worse Notts destroy Warwickshire.
Fair play to Hampshire earlier in the week, I think I’m right in saying that England wanted Pieterson to play in an upcoming match but Hampshire turned it down as Pieterson had previously said he didn’t want to play for them and wanted to join another club as he is based in London and couldn’t be bothered to travel.
Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 25, 2010 at 12:06 #308549I think Hampshire are within their rights to do so, though whether they should be is another matter. Since all of the money in English cricket comes from the England team, that should be the priority and the counties should fall into line. Perhaps one day we will have a sensible and coherent cricket set-up.
Fixture list is going crazy at the moment, with championship, T20 and 40 over matches all happening at once. I’ve gone for a few in the Clydesdale thingy today, Notts to beat Durham, Northants to beat a Kaneria-less Essex and the Unicorns to beat the woeful men from New Road at surprising odds of 3.25 with Boylesports.
Also fancy Surrey to beat Somerset (apologies) who have already lost twice to the same opposition this year, are without Pollard and who will have one eye on the FPT quarter finals this week.
July 25, 2010 at 18:56 #308642I promise I will never doubt Somerset again!
Some good cricket tomorrow. I’ve laid the draw in the Second Test in Colombo. Although there is rain in the air Sri Lanka will be toothless without Murali, I’d expect India to play better, Harbhajan may get more help and in 20 Tests there, only 5 have finished as draws. 1.63 is too short a price.
Also backed Jayawardene to top score for Sri Lanka as he loves this venue.
In the Friends Provident I am certain that Notts and Warwickshire will be going through, but the Bears are too short a price, so have backed Notts at 1.89 and also David Hussey to top score for them at 7.2. Although he bats at 5, he does top the averages and run scoring charts and is mostly available at 5.0 or 4.5 generally, so 7.2 is worth a dabble.
Don’t know if you saw it on ESPN, Nathan, but Pollard has been in fine form, his bowling got smashed but he single handedly rescued the game against Leeward Islands with 50 off about 20.
Also been looking at the World Cup odds, I know it is a long way out but I’m tempted to back Zimbabwe and lay them off later. They’ve beaten India at home, competed well with West Indies in the Caribbean and they will shock someone, I am sure. May wait and back them on a match-by-match basis, particularly if up against someone complacent like England or South Africa.
July 25, 2010 at 21:40 #308695I promise I will never doubt Somerset again!
I try not to praise them up too much because when I do they seem to put in a bad game but this is the best Somerset side I’ve seen in a very long time. Kartik be there again next season and the way the wicket is changing at Taunton with not preparing a batting paradise for championship games I think one more quality bowler and they could land the title. Need to win it soon as Trescothick could prove hard to replace.
Nice bet there with the Unicorns thought Worcester had hit enough because Durston no longer plays for the Unicorns and he was their main man before the break in the comp.

July 27, 2010 at 10:57 #309041No Cameron White today for Somerset but the good news is that if they can get past Northants then Pollard should return for finals day.

July 28, 2010 at 17:18 #309423Walk in the park for Somerset, very impressive win and with Pollard to come back, they must surely have a great chance.
Naturally, I got 3/4 of the semi-finalists wrong, the 2nd Test in Colombo is heading for a draw and Jayawardene managed 163 but still didn’t top score.
Have backed Jamaica to beat Trinidad today as the Yardies looked more convincing in disposing of Canada and the Leeward Islands (who almost gave T&T a shock). Also backed Pakistan at 4.2, with England absurdly odds on. I think Pakistan’s attack is the equal of ours, in the conditions.
August 1, 2010 at 09:56 #310359I’m tempted to sign up to Eurosportbet as they have Somerset at 7/1 to win the championship according to oddschecker. I’ve never been so confident and with yesterday’s hammering given out to Notts that’s 4 wins out of 5 with only a whole day rained off v Kent stopping it being 5/5. I can almost smell the title…

August 4, 2010 at 11:59 #310884Nathan, Notts weren’t off a yard at the weekend. Its all part of a wider masterplan for the 14th.
August 4, 2010 at 13:04 #310891In all seriousness, I have the impression that most players would prefer to win the T20 (and a place in the Champions League) than the C.Championship.

Both sides still in with a shout of landing the treble. I wish however that Notts would go away and take their masterplan with them.
