It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 1, 2021 at 18:17 #1526191I hate coffee and tea, Paul. But I absolutely love coffee cake!… And pretty much every cake there is… Possibly paying the price as am not really allowed them nowadays. No cake likes me; blood sugar level goes through the roof.

Shame because could do with one today as celebrating.
Confirmation of house contracts exchanged.

What revives you at breakfast Ginger, tap water and/or fruit juice?
Betty’s* Pure Assam and Afternoon Darjeeling are ambrosia: not the custard, the preferred beverage of the Greek Gods
Coffee I don’t rate very highly and is only taken when out and about, so not much consumed over the last year
Congrats on finally selling your house, treat yourself to a thin slice of Battenberg

* For those unfortunates who don’t live in Yorkshire, Betty’s is a string of very, very splendid tea rooms

March 1, 2021 at 23:19 #1526277I now drink tap water almost exclusively, Drone; breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea and supper… With an occasional pure orange juice. Alcohol only once or twice a year. Ditto cake! Hope I can find a home with as good tasting tap water in my next home. Surprising how much tap water varies around the UK.
Used to love Battenberg as a kid, but with my palate nowadays is one I’d have to refuse. Tastes far too sweet.
Value Is EverythingMarch 2, 2021 at 05:24 #1526467Let’s hear it for the PANCAKE
flat as a mat
It’ll make you fat.
Give it a toss
and it’ll make you cross.
Add a lemon to its art
And a touch of sugar
to soften its tart.
Its a PANCAKE
the most lovely taste…in the world
Maria Maria MARIA
I’ve just met a cake
called Maria
Bake it light
and your plate
will start singing,
Bake it brown
And you’ll get
The neighbours sniffing.

I’m sure the hard water in your area percolating through all that chalk is very good; so should be that in the limestone Mendips if you end up there
The water here in York has a mildly unpleasant taint as I believe much of it is sourced from the River Ouse and its lower catchments and hence requires significant adulteration with purifying chemicals
The west side of Sheffield where I grew up and in Harrogate where I lived for many years had excellent, very cold soft water. The dams collecting it were nearby in the foothills of the Pennines
As you say water quality does vary, or subjective quality does anyway
When I’m not drinking tea I drink plenty of water, though usually with a dash of Ribena or Lime Cordial
My torrid love affair with alcohol has all but ceased. There was a time not so long ago when the closure of pubs would have been a curse: not now, fortunately enough

The water here is so hard if you filled a swimming pool with tap water and dived in you would get concussion.
We have to filter our tap water to make it drinkable, even the dog won’t touch it, unless as a last resort.
Drone – Betty’s is a joy and whenever I visit Yorkshire I’ll make time to have afternoon tea at one of Betty’s establishments – the one at Harlow Carr is my favourite, I find “head office” in Harrogate gets too busy.
Tea wise Earl Grey is my first choice, followed by Orange Jaipur or Chai (all drunk sans milk, of course)
Like you Drone my interest in alcohol has declined – gone are the days, in my 30’s, when the pub would ring to see if I was OK if I missed a night. Where there would be lock-in’s until the small hours most nights.
Nowadays, when I have my annual medical, the answer to the alcohol question is “one or two units a month” – invariably a G&T

Probably mine too; that expansive view over the gardens is marvellous
Tank, ‘Le Chic Antique’ sounds oh so very Harrogate
March 4, 2021 at 23:21 #1527136Think I like a fruit cake. Maybe because I’m one myself

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.March 6, 2021 at 01:14 #1527445Drone, can you recommend a decent recipe for Battenberg cake? Or at least point out which part of the preparationis the most important one?
March 6, 2021 at 10:53 #1527509The only baking I’m capable of is potatoes and, if I’m feeling particularly adventurous, flapjack
A good recipe for battenberg is an amble down the confectionery aisle at the supermarket of your choice
Mini-battenbergs are exceedingly good: two sticky gobfuls and gone
March 6, 2021 at 11:07 #1527520Thanks, Drone. I might try to find something on YouTube as well.

I would definitely follow Drones advice and buy a ready made one – baking your own is a real faff, definitely something for Bake Off aficionados and it’s almost impossible to cut the sponge straight lol
