OA, the Local Hero theme was mainly used in 88 & 89 I think. It was perfect for the betting montages, one of my faves. I tried to go up into the loft to dust down my old VHS tapes so I could check for you, but I nearly broke my f*****g neck.
The Robin Hood theme tune was perfect for the end of The BBC’s coverage on the Friday, always got me in the mood for The National the next day. It also worked well when they used it for the runners and riders about an hour before the race.
Here’s a couple more used during the 80’s, hopefully the one you’re thinking of.

January 12, 2012 at 12:54 #386560Apologies for the delay in coming back to you VtC.
Fascinated by those two links you posted – two bits of music I’d not heard before.
I don’t think they’re the one I’m thinking of, in relation to the 1984 GN. I did think at first that it might be the Human League track, but I think it probably wasn’t. Of course now I’m wondering when and in what context these tracks were used!
January 12, 2012 at 19:48 #386626No worries OA, for your info both tracks were used for Betting Montages around 86, 87.
January 14, 2012 at 13:08 #386853Been racking my brains OA, but without making an expedition into my loft, this is the only other one I can recall from the 80’s which hasn’t been mentioned yet.
Think it’s too late to be the one you’re thinking of, but you never know.
January 14, 2012 at 17:22 #386877Do you remember this Moehat?
January 18, 2012 at 12:33 #387259Hi VtC, thanks again for your latest dig into the memory vaults and pulling out the ZZ Top track. Again, I have to confess I don’t remember that one.
As the Human League track wasn’t a million miles away from what I have in mind, I did check both theirs and Heaven 17’s albums of the time, just in case there was something else there, but nothing stood out.
Looks like this track may remain a mystery for a little while yet. Either that, or my mind is playing its dirtiest trick on me so far!
Thanks again though. And if anyone anywhere knows where full coverage of the 1984 National (not just the race) exists, please let me know!
January 18, 2012 at 13:15 #387261Everloving, by Moby, always makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Often used for parades on Ch.4.
January 18, 2012 at 17:42 #387283No worries OA, I’m afraid that’s me done, can’t think of anymore. If I ever get round to digging the old tapes up, I’ll give you a shout.
January 25, 2012 at 14:47 #388213Have to say your memories are fantastic!
February 4, 2014 at 12:42 #467030Apologies for resurrecting a two-year old thread, but I stumbled across the link below, and thought the nostalgia fans on here would appreciate.

The intro to Racing from Ascot on the BBC, 1982, eaturing the Whitbread Trial. I think it’s early 1982 and the Gold Cup/Grand National winners would be Little Owl and Aldaniti?
I tried to find the card in an online newspaper archive and came up short. However, I think I may have found the results and think the winner may have been Cavity Hunter?
Thoughts/memories appreciated!
February 4, 2014 at 16:41 #467055Y’know, I remember the music but don’t recal watching the programme
I’ve been wondering what music they’ll use for Cheltenham this year, and my money is on Avicci’s Hey Brother February 4, 2014 at 16:59 #467058February 4, 2014 at 17:04 #467059http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL40360BD64F54DBDA
oops; sorry abou that. Wanted to make sure I’d copied it in case I never find it again [might end up spending the rest of the night watching it…]I love the way Peter O’Sullevan says ‘very fast at that one, Desert Orchid’, with the emphasis being on the ‘very’.February 4, 2014 at 17:59 #467065Since I retired I’ve been wallowing in nostalgia. I’ve sorted out boxes of photos and put my cd’s in alphabetical order [again; they have a habit of leaving the shelf and not going back to the right place]. Next is to go through 20 plus years of racing posts and shelves and shelves full of racing videos. It’s making me feel a bit sad
February 4, 2014 at 18:22 #467070Thanks for bringing this thread up again as I had missed it.
The old BBC theme really brought memories flooding back. I started young, first memories Arkle breaking down in the King George Chase on Boxing Day 1966.
Ended up watching the links instead of working. Noticed how the National fences have really shrunk since the 1980s, Bechers looks smaller than the "Foinavon Fence" used to be, now.
Also there is a shot of how Haydock used to look before the "Wheelies" on one of the montages.
Sorry, horse racing just isn’t the same, sad.February 4, 2014 at 19:23 #467077I tried to find the card in an online newspaper archive and came up short. However, I think I may have found the results and think the winner may have been Cavity Hunter?
Thoughts/memories appreciated!
I’ve gone through an old newspaper and found the Whitbread Trial. I had to link it to the nearest headline (which has nothing to do with racing). Just click and hold the right button on your mouse and move upwards (the page will scroll down). The racecard will be in front of your eyes.
And yes, Cavity Hunter did win

February 5, 2014 at 10:34 #467114Thanks – some great names all across that card.
