Earlier this year, Fatty from The Bash Street Kids was renamed Freddy.
Now Spotty has had his name changed to Scotty.
Right, because that will really stop kids making fun of the fat kid or the spotty kid…
December 21, 2021 at 06:49 #1573579I have neither read – nor thought about – The Beano in over 50 years.
But it wouldn’t surprise me if it was still popular among a few TRF Lounge habituees as it strikes me as the sort of publication which is pitched at their level and might be the place they get their notions about current affairs from.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 21, 2021 at 07:24 #1573581It would be interesting to know how many children actually read it now, or if it is mostly read by adults reminiscing about their childhoods.
Just hope the editors leave Roger The Dodger alone!!
December 21, 2021 at 08:15 #1573584Surely he must be Roger the Codger by now? 🤔
December 21, 2021 at 08:34 #1573586Or indeed Roger the Coffin Dodger.
December 21, 2021 at 09:46 #1573594Gladiateur made me smile, then Richard made me laugh out loud – great double act, gentlemen!

Wondering if Beano is diverse enough?

Stop messing with history
All the characters are timeless and should be left
beautifully preserved and intacta. If I remember rightly they have even made Rupert look
more like a bear.December 23, 2021 at 09:10 #1574089Used to read the Beano, back in the early 70’s. Where Dennis always ended being spanked by dad and his slippers. Then the pc lot interfered and spanking was banned.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.

December 24, 2021 at 20:23 #1574370It’s so long since I read it I don’t remember the character.
But Male stereotypes seem to evoke less outrage so, if Daz is male, then probably.

Dennis would never have made the front page without being slippered regularly.
DISCIPLINE MAKETH THE BOYFebruary 20, 2022 at 16:45 #1584001I read both comics but on balance I probably just preferred the Dandy – Korky the cat and Desperate Dan are called to mind. The Bash street kids were mayhem – I was too young !
February 25, 2022 at 20:46 #1584726I read the Beano as a child and still buy it when a special edition comes out. I have edition numbers 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500 and 4000 as well as the 50th anniversary edition.
