I’d be happy if we can restrict them to a lead of around 60/70. I don’t think that would be too bad for us to turn around into a winning position, anthing less than that will be a bonus for me.
Anderson and Broad bowled pretty well early on yesterday and if they can come out and bowl well early and break this partnership then it could be game on.
As I thought from the beginning of this test Swann could be crucial for us. In him we have a World class match winner and I think he could be the difference. It would also be nice for my unlucky 15 if he could bag a 5/6 wicket haul, especially with good runs already on the board for Cook and Hussey..
I still fancy us to win this!
November 27, 2010 at 00:29 #330076No luck at all so far!
Anderson bowled superbly so far and been desperately unlucky not to get Hussey, even though he should have gone!
Bad signs now though that they’ve ridden through the rough storm of the good England start…hope not!
November 27, 2010 at 11:42 #330111Wishing I’d kept my thoughts about Haddin etc to myself – I suggested 150-5 being turned into 300-6, but even I’m stunned by 150-5 becoming 450-6.
Some thoughts – England really should have had a better plan for using the two decision reviews. Wasting them both before we’d taken a wicket was a shambles and using one on a disputed caught behind was entirely pointless, they should only ever be used by the bowling side for lbw decisions.
How much can one ball change a series – Hussey edges first ball and it drops just short of the slips, what a difference if that carries. Last time in Australia, Giles drops Ponting at deep square leg in Adelaide when the Aussies were 450 behind on first innings. They go on to win that match.
Am I alone in hitting the mute button now whenever Shane Warne gets near a microphone. He can talk all right, but if you listen carefully it’s a mixture of fluent bollocks and the blindingly obvious. Basically he’s a windbag in love with the sound of his own voice.
If we save this match, it will be a better performance than Cardiff in 2009, but the stage is perfect for long defensive displays from the openers, Trott and Collingwood. Big plus as well if we can keep the Aussies in the field for most of the next two days, then bat first after the quick turnround.

November 27, 2010 at 19:13 #330205That was the real costly thing wasting the review!
The turning point for me was Hussey being given not out when he was absolutely plum! Think he was on 85 then and they were still about 30/40 adrift.
It was in the middle of a spell when Anderson and Broad were bowling extremely well, Anderson especially. The 7 or 8 overs he bowled first off was exceptional stuff and really, really unlucky not to get what his efforts deserved.
If Hussey had gone at that point our tails would have been up, they would have been under real pressure and it would have been a totally different game IMO.
Dar is a top quality umpire but that decision was a shocker, 2 noises or not!
November 27, 2010 at 22:22 #330233Yep, shame about Hussey not being given LBW, guys.
I know there were tow noises but it doesn’t appear to have been the bat
Hmm, England did bowl well in that first hour, Jimmy was seriously unlucky.
Just have to hope we can save the test. I’m going to appear very stubborn on this, but if England save the test or lose I’ll still punt England to win the series at (hopefully) a tasty price.
Come on Enggggggerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrland!

November 27, 2010 at 23:48 #330245That’s that then…Beefy and his pitch inspection…see out the first 10 overs or so with a bit of luck maybe and then we should bat out today and tomorrow easily.
Hope he’s right…come on boys!
November 28, 2010 at 06:24 #330262Knows his stuff does that Beefy!
Absolutely tremendous fightback from England. I nod off for a couple of hours on sofa and half expect us to have had a collapse, instead we’ve added 150 odd runs for the loss of just one wicket.
I’ve seen enough in this test already to think we can easily retain these Ashes, early days I know but I just don’t see the danger in this Aussie side as in the great sides of previous years.
November 28, 2010 at 10:48 #330275Brilliant…..
Blackbeard to conquer the World
November 28, 2010 at 20:05 #330328Cracking night for England, particularly as the Ockers try to get after the captain & vice-captain early on.
That Aussie attack can look a bit anaemic nowadays and Mitchell Johnson may be at the last-chance saloon. To paraphrase the nursery rhyme:
"When he was good, he was very, very good, but when he was bad he was horrid."
Bollinger apparantly has plenty of mates in the media pulling for him and, if selected, it would make four clients of Advanced Hair Studio in the ground.
using one on a disputed caught behind was entirely pointless, they should only ever be used by the bowling side for lbw decisions.
Absolutely. I have
never
seen one given for a caught behind and snicko isn’t in play to give a definitive answer.

November 28, 2010 at 22:41 #330348Draw now 1/20
This has really highlighted what many of us knew – Aussies are vulnerable. I think our attack is more dangerous, esp once Swanage comes to the fore – and he will. (credit to Aussie bats for taking him on though – brave ploy)
Eng best prices 13/8 to win the Ashes now. Will we ever see 11/4 again?????
And where the hell is Morgan?! Having waxed lyrical about him in my opening thread he may not get a look in

December 1, 2010 at 22:50 #330772OK chaps, England
3/1
with Betfred to win the 2nd test. Gotta be the bet. Eng have stronger bowling and batting. Can’t see Aussie bowling changes making much difference – you?
I’m sticking with KP and Clarke to top bat for their teams respectively. They have looked ready to rumble, so let’s be having them.
C’mon Blighty!

December 1, 2010 at 23:16 #330777If there is to be a winner then I’d have to go for us. I thought we brought the most positives out of the first test and if one team more than the other looks capable of taking 20 wickets I reckon it would be us.
That said, it’s supposed to be another batters paradise so can only see more hard work for the bowlers and another draw.
I’m more than happy with how my unlucky 15 is going at the moment.
I picked Cook and Hussey over the series because I thought top run scorer would be more than likely someone who could stick around a bit as opposed to the stroke players.
For this test though I’d be happy to be with the stroke players and my picks for top runs would be the probable favourites in Pietersen and Ponting…
December 3, 2010 at 09:26 #330955Top series batters bets Zam, especially if Cook gets another 235 tonight!
At 2/3 I was hoping we’d skittle them for nothing but it never really happens in Test cricket and that pitch does seem to calm down quite sharply. The three run-scorers look their calmest players at the moment; Hussey has found form again and Haddin is playing consistently well. Watson’s reinvention as an opener has been impressive, although he has lost 5mph of pace as a bowler.
Ponting and Clarke look right under the pump at the moment which has to be good news, the skipper looking really fractious when our openers came out. While Johnson always looked as though he was going to be dropped, I thought the decision to give Hilfenhaus the elbow seemed a bit strange as I thought he bowled well in Brisbane. Looks like a long tail, too. Still, all will be revealed…

December 3, 2010 at 19:56 #331054Bit like a mirror image of the 1st test so far with the team winning the toss and batting posting what looks like a well below par score for the wicket.
Take nothing away from the England bowlers though who bowled well. Jimmy Anderson has been exceptional so far.
Looking forward to tonight..
December 4, 2010 at 05:15 #331093Trying desperately to hold out and see Cook get another hundred, struggling to keep me eyes open though even though KP looking to start to find his rythmn!
Excellent again from us…Come on England!
December 4, 2010 at 05:30 #331094That’ll do nicely!
Brilliant stuff from Cook, another hundred up and over 400 for the series already!
Runs coming very quickly at moment, love seeing us serve it up to the Aussies like this!
Sounds fantastic in the ground…barmy army, barmy army..ringing out, would love to be there!
