Does anybody know why the Aga Khan has very few or no runners in England anymore? Off the top of my head I don’t believe he has a horse in training with an English trainer but plenty in Ireland and France.
I assume it is to do with poor prize money, but that surely can;t be the whole reason as he generally has good quality horses. Or is that there are no trainer’s deemed good enough? Didn’t Stoute used to train for him?
August 8, 2008 at 16:46 #176440I presume he’s still annoyed about Aliysa being disqualified after The Oaks.didn’t he remove all of his horses from England after that? and not allow his other horses to travel here?
August 8, 2008 at 17:04 #176444The Aga came back into British racing years after he removed all of his string following the the Oaks disqualification then Luca Cumani was involved in a dispute with Aga and he took away his horses and sent them to Stoutey inc Breeders Cup winner Kalanisi. Now it seems he has no horses with Stoutey any more. At least I haven’t seen any recent runners.
This man is also a British passport holder but he seems a bit of a anglophobe to me. Always finding fault with how things are done over here.
August 8, 2008 at 18:16 #176448He was led to believe his horses were running while medicated and since he is a traditional style breeder he was better served by not having his mares under a cloud.
August 11, 2008 at 15:50 #176731Well either way its a real shame as he produces some excellent homebreds which we don’t see enough of.
Even the horses he sends to Oxx these days are not of the quality that his french trainers are getting.
August 11, 2008 at 17:05 #176736Would the Aga Khan send better horses to one trainer than to another. That is not the man’s style. For whatever reason the Oxx yard has not being firing lately. His horses are not running up to his expectations, never mind not running as good as an outsider would expect. He has an exceptional 2yo filly and some 3yo fillies but none are moving forward as hoped. Dare I say the word low grade virus or infection possibly in the yard. That is possibly why the Aga keeps his horses in different yards. It is easier to watch them day by day in Paris I agree, but not because he makes a decision at birth where to place them.
August 11, 2008 at 19:31 #176742Oxx hasn’t been doing great for a while now,the last couple of season’s anyway, maybe more.Personally i think he relies too much on the Aga Khan.
August 11, 2008 at 21:04 #176747Hadarama sluiced in for The Aga Khan and John Oxx in a 3 year old handicap at Ballinrobe this evening.
August 12, 2008 at 11:20 #176779He has a stud in Ireland and 3 in France and afaik now only uses trainers based in these countries with the vast majority of his horses being trained in France. As to runners in England by and large French trained horses don’t run much here and the Aga Khan’s are no exception.
August 12, 2008 at 13:32 #176798Does anyone remember Peter Thomas’ mini biography of the Aga Khan?
August 12, 2008 at 14:53 #176812The Aga Khan has horse with Mick Halford also.

August 12, 2008 at 16:49 #176832Well Oxx better wish the Aga doesn’t remove his horses because he already has seems to have lost all his Sheikh Mohammed yearly intake.
Doesn’t the Aga feel any loyalty towards Stoutey who trained two derby winners for him and other top classers like Kalanisi and Shardari.
August 16, 2008 at 19:08 #177150Why run for peanuts in the UK, when he can campagn his frenchbreds for better prizemoney and get the owner and breeders premiums for campagning their, do the maths guys it makes sense too move to France…
I dont know the reasons why his Highness pulled out for the Stoute yard, reasons which are not public…
August 17, 2008 at 11:05 #177203Despite prize money issues the english racing remains the best in the world and the Aga is not short of a few bob so I think it’s Prima Donnaish to wash his hands of racing in this country as he seems to have done.
Did the Aga ever sponsor any big races in the UK as all the other bigtimers have because I can’t remember it. The Aga’s runner tend to run in better class races where the prize money discrepancy is not there anyway.
I also remember in the 80’s he removed all his horses from Fulke Johnston Houghton without any good reason. He clearly like his own way and if he doesn’t get it, toys out of pram.
