I have spoken to numerous people within the game, and like anything, there are some that are going to be affected and there are some that probably won’t notice.
However, for the smaller yards, that dont have the big, rich owners, they have stated that it is getting increasingly more and more expensive to run a horsebox, and you can see why.
Horseboxes dont do that much to the mile, in terms of MPG, i know horseboxes which do as little as 8 MPG, where as some of the vehicles can manage around 15-20 MPG.
You then have to factor in the transport of bedding, feed, haylage, etc… that are required on yards, and this, of course, with the increase of VAT, fuel, transport costs, etc… add more and more cost to the industry.
Now, i know a lot of people within horse racing wouldn’t even notice the increase in VAT and fuel costs, simply because they have so much money that it doesn’t affect them, but im sure the smaller yards are going to be affected by this.
It is a sad situation when people cannot perform what they have wanted to do as a lifetime ambition, and also something that they love and enjoy doing on a day to day basis, as a result of the government constantly targetting the motoring industry as a piggybank.
I just wondered if anyone on here had heard of any local/smaller trainers, that are going to be struggling as a result of the VAT increase, fuel and transport costs always on the increase, etc…? ? ?

Perhaps we’ll go back to the early days, when horses had to walk or be ridden to the races. Some of the tales of how long 19th century Derby winners took to get down from Yorkshire, or wherever, make epic reading!
[OT, Gaz, have you any idea why your threads (and yours alone) always appear in a near-unreadably small font size? I need a camera obscura to read them.]
January 3, 2011 at 10:22 #334644Luckily the VAT increase doesn’t affect many owners as there is a VAT scheme for owners which allows all VAT to be recovered.
The travel costs are a serious issue, though. We now think very carefully about where to run and although at the moment we are restricted due to the weather, when the summer comes we shall be limiting our runners to local tracks. I think there will certainly be an even bigger emphasis on trainers supporting their local track and also a greater use of multiple entries on the same card rather than having just one runner travelling to a course.

This is true!
I do know a few trainers within the Newmarket area, that do actually try to share horseboxes where they can, i.e. if they each have 1 runner going to the same destination, they will take the horses in the same box and share the cost.
Obviously, the likes of Nicholls, King, etc… generally wouldn’t be affected as much as some of the smaller yards, but for the smaller yards, it is going to be a very tough year i feel which is a massive shame for the sport, and obviously, those people as individuals.
