I’m considering entering our 2yo. She’s not doing any serious work yet so we have no idea whether she is any good. First entry fee is £450 and total entry fee including all forfeit stages is £1,400. Gut feeling is it’s a rip-off but would value opinions.
January 14, 2008 at 19:42 #135121We don’t know the horse’s pedigree, how she looks, how she moves or how much you had to pay for her, so surely only your trainer (or anyone who has seen the horse) can offer such advice?
With no information to go by, we might as well encourage you to put them in the Guineas and Oaks too.
January 14, 2008 at 19:50 #135124These sort of races are redolent of the old produce and foal stakes that used to provide some fairly tasty 2-y-o prizes, but with owners providing the vast bulk of the money on offer.
For many years the National Produce Stakes was the top 2-y-o race in the UK, but once the Pattern system was introduced, these races quickly died a death, but they’ve started to creep back in recent years.
Yes, they are a bit of a rip-off, and no black type either, but if owners are happy to stump up the money, it’s hard to argue against them, but it does cause funny things to happen to the 2-y-o sire lists.

My question was really concerning the merits of entering generally.
If you want specifics click on the ‘horses’ tab of http://www.stratfordbardsracing.co.uk The picture was taken on 16th December and Mark (the trainer) advises she has grown a lot even since then
January 14, 2008 at 20:01 #135131Isn’t the key question how much you have to pay out before you get some clues as to whether she’ll be up the job?
Yes it’s a rip-off for all but the first half dozen finishers, but equally, if you aren’t in it, you can’t win it.
Check how much you get back if you pay all the fees and get eliminated – also is there a consolation race?

The total entry fee is £1,400. If you are eliminated at the final stage you get £700 back. The first forfeit stage is May 6th (£450) followed by a further £400 on July 22nd and a final £100 on September 26th. It’s been framed very cleverly as most people won’t be certain of their horse’s ability by May 6th by which point you’re in for £900 so the temptation is to keep going in the hope of getting £700 back if eliminated
January 18, 2008 at 12:07 #136161In the end we decided to swerve the Tattersalls race and enter in the Watership Down race at Ascot as it is restricted to fillies. I see there are 251 entered!
Fist of Fury – I thought you might be interested to know that we have named our filly Feet of Fury
January 18, 2008 at 12:23 #136163Our filly was in the Watership Down Stud race, she went through the ring as a buy-back in 2005 and we pulled her out of the race in June. They always state how much you can win in them but they don’t tell you it cost £2,000 to keep the horse in possibly before it’s even run.

You can check out the terms of the sales races on the racing admin site. This year the entry fees for the Watership Down race are £300 plus further payments of £300 on May 6th, July 1st and September 20th. The final two payments are refunded if you are ballotted out at the Declaration stage.
