I’m seriously considering sending a large pile of sheets, pillows, duvets, pillow cases, eiderdowns and a complimentary night shirt to Tanya Stevenson for her reports from the "bedding ring" on Channel 4 Racing.
The poor woman clearly needs a large consignment of bedding to be delivered as soon as possible, in view of her apparent inability to say "betting".
I now video all Channel 4 racing programmes and Morning Line shows so that I can fast-forward her "bedding" reports. As soon as I hear her say "Welcome to the Doncaster bedding ring" (or wherever) I start feeling a mixture of anger and despair. How can it be possible for someone not to be able to say "betting"? It’s such a simple word. It’s even worse when she says "one hundred der thirdy".
I know racing worthies will defend The Female’s appalling diction as irrelevant because of her supposed wealth of betting (sorry, bedding) knowledge but surely an ability to speak fluently and without using sloppy speech should be paramount in a racing presenter.
It’s very sad that John McCririck has been virtually sidelined. How he must rue his promotion of "The Female" all those years ago. I can’t believe he really thinks she is so great. Now Tanya (sorry, "Tarns") has virtually usurped him on all but the biggest meetings.
The use of "bedding" has even spread to Channel 4’s Jim McGrath, who ought to know better because he is clearly educated.
Tanya’s reports from the ring are very lightweight compared with those of Big Mac and all the wealth of information he presents on statistics is clearly missing in her contributions. The stuttering attempts at humour by Tanya (accompanied by the awful warbling laugh) are embarrassing (usually involving a rather laboured pun) — and slipping in the occasional big word ("liquidity" is the usual favourite) is no substitute for professional presentation.September 20, 2011 at 18:05 #371486Oh no, anuva moanin’ post abou nothin’.
So what?
I ain’t no’iced.
What about Francome’s moonrakereese?
I’m a ‘Ampsh’re/Wilwsh’re bloke meeself, so know a bit about it.
Couldn’t give a xxxx if Tanya says "bedding" or "betting", we all know what she means. It’s a racing prog, not English lit.Value Is EverythingSeptember 20, 2011 at 18:27 #371494

September 20, 2011 at 18:43 #371497There’s lots of things wrong in racing, how Tanya Stevenson speaks isn’t one of them

If there is then it must be "Anything you might expect to find on the Betfair forum"
September 20, 2011 at 20:45 #371511Y’know I spent a long time on this very forum defending The Morning Line but good grief, what a dull & uninformative programme it has become.
I’d be rather glad that Tanya says ‘bedding’ because it allows my mind to wander.
It’s just shame that Alice Plunkett doesn’t say ‘bedding’ too.
September 21, 2011 at 03:53 #371525You’re quite right that the Morning Line has become dull and unimaginative. The whole dumbing-down of the programme is a matter for great regret.
Nick Luck even seems to find the whole thing a bit embarrassing and tiresome now. Certainly, his unfeasibly tight jeans have me cringing. I hate the fact that someone, presumably Andrew Franklin, has told them all to dress down because that is no doubt seen as less formal and what people want at that time of the morning. It’s actually an insult to the viewer.
Mike Cattermole, normally so smart and professional on the afternoon programmes, is the worst, with his scruffy jeans.
What’s wrong with wearing ties now? A lot of the presenters seem uncomfortable with it, notably Richard Hoiles, who previously was easily the smartest member of the team, in his buttoned-up suit, but who has now been compelled to dress down too.
BBC news reporters are just as bad. The casual look has certainly spread.
I knew everyone would defend Tanya and her "bedding" reports. Her popularity is a total mystery to me.September 21, 2011 at 06:31 #371529She’s popular because she is informed and professional.
It’s all too easy to be harsh on presenters, who are often, as has been alluded to on this thread and others, only doing as told by directors/producers.

Its not Andrew Franklin’s fault, he has been replaced by a woman (don’t know her name) who I think has admitted she knows nothing about racing. Says a lot about how bad the show is nowadays

Your comments in the last paragraph say it all. Could she be the one who thinks that Matt Dawson can add something to a TV programme about horse racing, or anythng else for that matter, I wonder?.
In conclusion, may I offer my support for Tanya, who is well informed and not afraid to tilt at windmills with her selections.
September 21, 2011 at 09:35 #371545Her broadcasting skills leave a lot to be desired and it’s amazing she’s been allowed to do it for as long as she has, also notice unlike the others she rarely if ever passes an opinion on any controversial issue discussed.
It seems bookmakers can also do little wrong in her book, her pet wish for 2011 was that people would stop picking on bookmakers
September 21, 2011 at 10:04 #371548I believe Tanya comes from a bookmaking family and/or worked for one prior to her C4 job. So it’s understandable, besides what is wrong with someone giving the bookies side?
Bookmakers do get a bad press in the media which is often not warranted.
Value Is EverythingSeptember 21, 2011 at 10:07 #371550I had the misfortune to have to speak to her on a number of occasions a few years ago and I’m afraid I was left with the indelible impression that if I’d stuck her together I’d have made one long plank.

Bookmakers reps to put the bookies side, they’re on tv enough. She should be on the punters side.
Do you really believe bookies get a bad press given that they sponsor a lot on the 2 racing channels and advertise a lot in the trade press.September 21, 2011 at 11:21 #371556I love Tanya, I would jump in ‘females’ bedding ring anyday!!

She is a good judge too, I remeber last year I think it was a horse called circumvent she tipped up at 40/1. I hadnt studied the race at all and had just flicked on so blindly backed her selection 2.50 e/w online!! Hacked up!!
Leave Tanya alone!!
