That was like watching kids trying to play hide and seek with a man. A toy town pace and then reeled in like a kipper.

Fantastic turn of foot. Beats me why so many of the other stables cant at least engineer themselves a faster race. Probably wouldnt do them any good but they are just walking into a hiding with races run that slow. Hell a horse but as of yet, i dont know quite where to put him in the pantheon of greats.

Well, I got quite choked up when he went past the other horses which, on the ‘moeometer’, must make him a bit special

. I was quite surprised at how I felt.

To be fair the slow pace tactics nearly worked, I still would have preferred a pacemaker in there as Toronado gets further despite what happened at York. They (team Hannon) must of known to some degree how fast Toronado could run in the final two furlongs here and tried to steal a lead but Kingman has a sensational gear change and despite rolling around a little and getting his feet in a muddle for a few strides done it easily enough in the end.

Yeah, as Toronado’s biggest fan I don’t want to make excuses but agree with that IBRacing.

What made me chuckle a little is Holt and Emma Spencer saying they have tried everything to beat Kingman this season.

Ummm they did but the only time was in the 2000 guineas and at a decent pace.

Yes. That may be the way to beat him, set a very fast pace and see if he really, truly stays one mile fully. The 2000 Guineas at least suggests it’s possible that he might not.

It was a farcical pace and the theory is that you can pinch it off the front of such a slowly run race. It didn’t work with Night Of Thunder though and it lacked ambition to try the same thing, albeit even more slowly run and with a different horse.

Darwin was never going to go forward today after his stable mate had been withdrawn and surely it was worth a try having a pacemaker and committing Toronado off a strong pace to try to draw the kick out of Kingman. The only thing that can stop an explosive kick is to pull the dynamite out earlier in the race.

I only caught a glimpse at the sectionals after the race and the team seemed more obsessed that Kingman’s 7th furlong was faster than Frankel had run, than the fact that Toronado, to my quick look anyway, seemed to cover the final furlong faster than Kingman.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I was so p!ssed off I’ve deleted the recording Steve so cant confirm the sectionals. The first 2 or 3 furlongs were apparently 20 seconds slower than when Toronado won the race last year, the horse has a big engine and the race was crying out for a pacemaker months ago.

At what distance does a pacemaker become redundant? Seven furlongs? a mile?

    This is Turftrack’s times

    draw – horse – 7f — 6f —- 5f —- 4f —– 3f —– 2f —– 1f —– WP
    4 Kingman 16.57 14.53 13.92 13.01 11.85 11.12 10.22 10.53
    5 Toronado 16.32 14.46 13.99 13.01 11.82 11.13 10.44 10.72
    2 Darwin 16.13 14.58 14.01 12.98 11.80 11.30 10.47 10.65
    1 Outstrip 16.47 14.55 13.93 12.91 11.85 11.22 10.65 10.61

    Herbert –

‘Hughesie told me he’s never been as fast in a final furlong as he’s just been in a Group One race’

    .

Toronado ran the final furlong slowest out of the four ie he’s not a sprinter, either ensure the mile is ran at a decent clip by runner a pacemaker or put the horse up to 10f, Harry.

Thanks for posting these figures Nathan. I’ll try to double check the ones put up by channel 4, it did raise my eyebrows when I thought I saw Toronado given a slightly quicker last furlong than Kingman.

Looking at the above figures it seems odd that 3 of the 4 put their fastest sectional in on the 7th furlong but Outstrip had his fastest sectional in the final furlong, having been faster than Darwin in the 6th furlong, slower than him in the 7th and then faster than him again in the last. Seems an odd progression for the final three furlongs of a race for Outstrip.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

It’s always difficult dissecting form in such a falsely run race. Kingman is currently the best miler around but I don’t think he will get any better. Toro nado I think will come on for the race and come qe2 day will be a much tougher opponent. Darwin on the face of it ran the race of his life but would need to run to that standard again before I’m convinced he is up to group 1 or 2 class. The breeders cup mile on very fast ground should be ideal but not convinced he stays beyond seven furlongs. He could be a late developer but let’s see. Outstrip ran well and could be up to group standard.

And GBR wonder why people warm to jump racing instead..

Wasn’t a horrible race at all  I found it fascinating and progessively gripping as the race unfolded.
