One of my favourite races of the jumps season, and as you’d expect, it looks like Willie Mullins holds most of the keys for this year renewal.
Annamix is the talking horse of the year so far, just as Melon was last year. He is a French import for Rich Ricci, bought from the same yard as Vautour.
Here is a video of his sole start in France where he finishes a promising runner up. The diminutive grey jumps well enough albeit running very green, and he closes on the winner the whole way to the line. Perhaps he’d relish a step up in trip from 2m1? The market says otherwise, and whether the money is actually coming in – or the bookies are simply running scared of yet another Mullins hotpot – is hard to know.
Backing such a horse for a race that is 5 months away is not usually my idea of a good bet, but Mullins’ record in the race speaks for itself, and his hype horses rarely fail to be there or there abouts come March. In recent years alone we’ve had Vautour, Un De Sceaux, Douvan, Min and Melon, who have all finished on the podium of their respective festival races. The only hype horse who has failed to live up to expectations in recent years is Senewalk as far as I can tell, and that was largely down to health issues.
Annamix will probably make his debut for Mullins in the next couple of months, and if he wins in any sort of convincing fashion his price will collapse like Brazil’s defence at the 2014 World Cup.
I have missed the boat with these Mullins hotpot in recent years, largely due to some misplaced sense of circumspection. No more I say, Annamix 14/1.
I backed Fayonagh at the tail-end of last season, but she is confirmed for the Mares Novice.
Another I like for this is Noel Meade’s Red Jack. The horse is 2/2 after winning two hot bumper contests. On debut he beat Debuchet in 2nd and Le Richebourg in 3rd.
Debuchet went on to confirm the form by beating Le Richebourg by 6l next time out. The form was then raised to another level when he finished second to Fayonagh in the Champion Bumper, and was elevated even further when he hacked up by 5l on his final start of the season.
Le Richebourg did his bit for the form by going on to win his next three starts by a combined distance of over 23 lengths.
Red Jack himself followed up his debut win by easily winning another strong looking bumper with an Elliot and Mullins hotpot beaten in behind.
Red Jack arguably has the best bumper form in the British Isles after Fayonagh, yet he is 25/1 for the Supreme and Debuchet is 14/1?
Noel Meade has done well at the festival in recent years, with his stable stars hitting the frame in their respective targets, (Disko, Road to Respect, Wounded Warrior, Road to Riches two years in a row).
The horse may not run to his 100% best throughout the early parts of the season, with a view to peaking at Cheltenham. Meade and McManus have done this with success in the past although perhaps not with their Grade 1 hopefuls. I’m inclined to take the 25/1 on offer now, and will top up along the way if he looks any way progressive.
Red Jack 25/1.
I also didRed Jack to win any race at the festival 14/1.
Sayar and Epicuris are another couple of Mullins inmates that I will keep an eye on with a view to the Supreme.
Best of luck to anyone playing at this early stage.
October 9, 2017 at 00:18 #1320786Good luck Voleur, I also took a wee bit of that 25’s for Red Jack, as I just can’t believe he’s that price. Just for a few quid each way, as I don’t spend too much cash on the novice hurdlers, though I do love the chat about them in the run up.
I rambled on about Le Richebourg all summer, and I’ve had a bigger bet on him at the 33’s ew, with the understanding that those who actually run during the summer, are rarely “the one”. I do like him though, and even though a bit to find with the pair you mention, I thought that was a sporting price, considering he does look to have improved.
Samcro is the other one that springs to mind here, and that 20’s could look ridiculous if the confirms his early promise, but he could be a contender for all 3 of the Novice Events, and as I said, not a race I go mad in, so Ill keep everything crossed for Le Richebourg at this stage, with Red Jack an able deputy.
October 9, 2017 at 00:56 #1320792And good luck to you VtC. As you say these Novice Hurdles are most definitely not races to go mad in, but nevertheless there is no race more satisfying to have the winner at a big ante post price.
Samcro of course is coming into this season with a huge reputation, and he is the novice hurdler I am most excited to see, but to me he just screams Neptune horse. Theoretically he could go for the Albert Bartlett, but after Death Duty’s hard defeat there last season I doubt Gordon will be sending his best there from now on.
Gigginstown are all about their staying chasers, so I can’t see them sending one of their hottest prospects in recent times down the Supreme route with a view to the Champion Hurdle/Arkle in following seasons. The Neptune, JLT/RSA route seems much more surefire to me.
Although he has excelled over the minimum trip, lets not forget he is a PtP winner on Heavy ground so he has stamina galore for the Neptune. Having said that, we’ve seen in recent years that the Supreme can paradoxically provide more of a stamina test, while the Neptune can be tailored for speedier types.
He’s going to be a tough one to pin down until Gordon comes out and nails his colours to the mast. Even then I won’t believe it until I see him under starters orders..
Samcro to win any race 10/1 with Hills could be the bet?
October 9, 2017 at 11:26 #1320814Love The Supreme. Ricci will be due to do his annual ATR interview soon enough so watch the market move after that. Getabird looked really good in bumpers last year before getting injured; wonder what the latest on him is..
October 9, 2017 at 15:47 #1320847getabird is back in full training . Can only assume he goes novice hurdling, wants stepping up in trip imo.
October 9, 2017 at 16:20 #1320851I have backed Sayar @ 33’s
October 16, 2017 at 07:49 #1321874Early doors supreme
65.0 – 60.0
60.0 < neptuneSomething that isn’t mentioned on in running quotes, i personally thought with a clear run he could have won the goffs landrover bumper, vision des flos came on his outside and the mullins horse had the rail, he had to go back out and kept on well to the line. Won his bumper before that very easily under Patrick mullins and was interesting he chose to ride him again rather than his dad’s horse, jp purchased him after his first run,
Joseph just said in his stable tour he will be out soon, and he could be a very good horse imo.October 16, 2017 at 16:30 #1321897Rocky where that stable tour of Joseph o Brein i like a look at that
And my bet in supreme is DOSTAL PHIL 33/1
French bred horse gone to JP Mc Manus with Hobbs training him think he could be very good
October 16, 2017 at 20:13 #1321905At the races.
November 10, 2017 at 16:22 #1326097I think debuchet is a nice price at 20-1, but I haven’t bet him so far. I am really looking forward to the debut of Red Jack as he is the obvious yardstick
November 10, 2017 at 16:48 #1326105Not just because this race is the start of the festival, but I love this race. Always produces future stars. Though last years renewal looked poor all year.
Have to agree with Voleurs first post and say that Red Jack has some incredible form already for this race.
But I won’t be backing anything here until I am sure where Samcro is running. For me, he’s the most excited I’ve been about seeing a horse run over hurdles in years.
Am currently backing him for the Neptune (which looks like his target race) and more so in the ‘To win any race market’.
November 26, 2017 at 21:20 #1328933Annamix entered in a Maiden Hurdle at Thurles next Thursday. Getabird entered in 2 Maidens next Wednesday in Punchestown (a 2 miler and a 2 mile 6f)
Samcro looks the pick of the novices at the moment; I’d imagine the markets for the Supreme and Ballymore will start to take shape next week
November 27, 2017 at 10:44 #1329006Real Steel also entered in that maiden of Annamix Thursday. Talk is he is very good also.
November 27, 2017 at 13:06 #1329037I am really looking forward to the debut of Red Jack as he is the obvious yardstick
Red Jack has been out already this season Autumnal, he won his maiden at Naas earlier this month. He looked like he needed the run, which is typical of Noel Meade. Probably wants better ground too, but in the end he won rather easily. Encouraging start, and he looks open to improvement.
November 27, 2017 at 18:05 #1329083Personally wouldn’t give Red Jack much of a chance over 2miles…
I’ve heard the chatter about Real Steel also…..
Plenty to happen before the first race in March!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!November 27, 2017 at 19:45 #1329097Annamix out for the season.

Not a rumour did I read or hear before he announced that live on tv.Took the 40s for Real steel on the back of that announcement
