I have heard there were only 26 paying customers at Newcastle last Sunday night. Outside of the lockdown era, I wonder if there has ever been a smaller crowd on a British racecourse?
I know these Sunday evening meetings were introduced to generate betting turnover rather than draw crowds. But that figure is pitiful if true. I doubt there was a surge in betting turnover either. How many people want to bet on a Sunday night?
I suppose Newcastle still made its money from the media rights.
March 7, 2024 at 17:43 #1683895The vast majority of all weather meetings through the winter are about media rights and betting turnover and nothing to do with attracting racegoers.
Nick Alexander in his blog last week called Newcastle”the most soulless course in the country” and said the AW track had ruined it.
March 7, 2024 at 20:12 #1683912I am thinking of doing the round trip Hampshire to Gosforth Park to Hampshire on Sunday to attend.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 7, 2024 at 20:51 #1683915I live a short walk from the course and I have never – not once – attended an all weather meeting. That includes Plate Day. I don’t know anybody who has (Plate Day aside).
I quite enjoy a midweek jumps meeting which can attract reasonable crowds. However, the prize money is abysmal and the quality of horse seen on the AW is far superior to anything over jumps nowadays, other than Fighting Fifth day. Depressing for a National Hunt fan like myself.

Not many, and believe me those who do don’t really care whether the horses are running around Gosforth Park, Philadelphia Park or Portman Park.

As is often the case with racing, the tail wagging the dog.
Nick Alexander is spot on about Newcastle, should never have been allowed to go all weather but the weak BHA did absolutely nothing to prevent it.
