I would be a little concerned about the form of the Hobbs horses in general. A few of his fancied runners ran stinkers today, so I just wonder if they are over that bout of coughing as much as Hobbs thinks.

March 13, 2007 at 22:06 #45793To me Detroit City ran like a stayer- which is something most Triumph hurdle winners and 2 mile flat handicap winners are.
Struggled early on simply because they went a fair gallop on good ground to get their positions. Managed to get into the race when O’Dwyer tried to get a breather into hardy but Ruby didnt have any of that and kicked on resulting in DC struggling again. He was going that couple of strides to fast the whole way.
He got away with it in soft ground, against weaker opposition and when allowed to dominate but it was ruthlessly exposed today.
March 13, 2007 at 23:52 #45794Harsh Aidan – DC was clearly ill at ease today. For a horse of his class to be pushed along after no more than half a mile illustrated he was clearly wrong. I’d give him another chance. Hobbs horses didn’t have a good day and we all know that when a yard isn’t firing it usually pays to take the form with a pinch of salt.
Winner won really well though and both Brave Inca and Hardy Eustace ran cracking races also.
March 14, 2007 at 00:09 #45795Dont think its harsh….the reason he was ill at ease today was the pace of the race. It was his first serious test of the whole season, the first test on decent going, the first test in a fast run race….not a coincidence in my book.
Have no doubt he will be racing over further next year.
March 14, 2007 at 00:12 #45796The horse didn’t travel a yard. No way was it a lack of pace. For some reason he has an off day. He quite possibly isn’t as good as the first 4 but he was a long way off from giving his true running.
March 14, 2007 at 00:21 #45798Wasnt the trimuph run in a record (ish) time last year?
Didnt he run a very fast time in the greatwood?
It was an off day. to be niggled that early suggests nothing else. The pace was fast enough but couldnt be be beyond his capabilities in the first two furlongs

True, the Triumph was run in record time last year, but it was still a novice race, against horses 2 stone inferior, (Whichever rating you use), than those he met yesterday. His form for that race reads;
"tracked leaders, pushed along 4th, chased leader after 3 out, driven approaching 2 out, slight lead under pressure last, ridden out".

which, admittedly with 100% hindsight and along with his flat record, suggests that he was always going to struggle for pace against truly top class horses.
I might have mentioned this before,;) but fast times against weaker opposition aren’t always a guarantee of class.
Interesting to note the post race comments of HE’s jockey Conor O’Dwyer, that they were always going 5 miles an hour faster than previous years.
It may well come to light that something was amiss with Detroit City but, whichever way you look at it, yesterday he just wasn’t fast enough, at any stage of the race.
March 14, 2007 at 09:47 #45801I think the race was set up a bit for the winner but in truth, if they’d gone slower he’d probably still have done them for toe. I don’t think there was any fluke about this and I think both BI and HE ran their races.
Maybe they’ll retire him to stud now though ;)
March 14, 2007 at 10:08 #45803definatly not his true running. pushed along after the first flight. something definatly wrong. should have been pulled up. he had the pace to keep up with fair along and win on the flat, and outsprint hardy in teh bula.
something will come to light soon

Dave
I would suggest you watch the race again.
The horse was right in the van until a slow jump at the first earned him a slap down the neck. He moved up again at the second, lost 3l with an untidy jump there and was niggled along to make up the ground, which he maintained under mostly hand-riding until the turn into the straight, where an abysmal jump put him completely out of contention.
A very similar ride to his Sun Alliance win where he was niggled for much of the race, with the notable difference that the errors were magnified yesterday because of the superior class and experience of the opposition, compared to the previous year.
Having watched the replay quite a few times, I am convinced that he was simply outpaced and outjumped on the better ground, and would bet that he won’t even contest next years CH, unless run on slower ground.
March 14, 2007 at 12:44 #45806I agree RH, just couldn’t go the pace and certainly couldn’t jump at that pace.
If you watch the first furlong he is completely flat out and unfortunately, whilst I thought this would suit him, it obviously didn’t!
Limitations exposed. Cue chasing campaign or stayers hurdle.
March 14, 2007 at 17:51 #45807shows how much you know reet hard. DC didnt even run in the Sun Alliance. enough said!!!
