Come on Katchit.
March 7, 2008 at 15:05 #148926That’s fine for Nick Mordin to say but a horse isn’t a car and he’s an ignorant bastid talking down to the man on the street like that
No offence but I can’t stand these guys who come up with crap like Mordin who seems to think every punter has his expereince or his luck in life ……….what also bugs me are guys who obviously haven’t got the faintest idea what they are talking about trying to appear smart which does no more than put people away who think they must know what they are talking about.
Another classic for the ever growing archive…
March 7, 2008 at 15:20 #148928I think Mordins point is a fair one
If i was betting large sums, then seeing the animal would be a pre-requisite for me
You dont have to be an "expert" to at least have a idea whether a horse is fit and in good condition
March 7, 2008 at 17:19 #148942In open races at Cheltenham, I tend to favour those who have course form and, in this case, horses who have Festival form.
At this time of year, some horse have had hard seasons, they need softer ground and would much rather be in their stable than at a racecourse. In contrast, some are fresh, prefer better ground and thrive at this time of year.
Sublimity has run respectfully at the previous two Festivals, showing great improvement each time. The horse runs well fresh, will not be inconvenienced by either soft or good ground and the guaranteed fast-pace will play right into his hands. Osana and Katchit are sure to go a decent pace and Sublimity, with his high cruising speed, will be waiting patiently, ready to pounce. He’s from a small stable who will, without question, have their star in top form.
The lack of support for the horse is irrelevant. Punters like to be smart – too smart sometimes. Last year, Sublimity was the dark horse, worth taking a chance on at 16/1. Now a 5/1 shot, his price is less appealing. I won’t be backing the horse at that price, either!
Katchit is the ew value in the race. To his detractors, may I remind them that Sublimity had to find vast improvement to win last year and look what happened. Katchit doesn’t need to find that much.
My idea of the first three:
1st Sublimity
2nd Katchit
3rd HarchibaldMarch 7, 2008 at 18:57 #148961That’s fine for Nick Mordin to say but a horse isn’t a car and he’s an ignorant bastid talking down to the man on the street like that

Geez is that the best you can do?…….thought you had more to you than sarcastic one liners…..how disappointing
March 10, 2008 at 12:44 #149446Quote from John Carr courtesy of the Racing Post:
“He’s in the same sort of form as he was last year and Philip (Carberry) has said he has even put on more muscle round his neck and his quarters.
“We couldn’t get any more weight off him, he has done loads of work at home. He was massive the day of the Boylesports compared to the others.
“We took him to Leopardstown last Monday and Philip rode him then.
“We worked him with Kong, who was fourth in the St Leger for John Dunlop – we’ve got him now and he’s going novice hurdling next season.
“He’s a fair horse but Sublimity left him for dead.”
March 10, 2008 at 13:07 #149450Hype empties wallets.
Absolutely mullered by a strong pace at Cheltenham last time out. Beat over the hill horses in a slow race last year.
Strong pace against improver’s this year.
Strangest of strange trainers imo.
Strangest of strange preparations.
Rumours of health problems.
Sublimity = Joke price.

Agree with your opening statement. Sublimity certainly isn’t one of the hype horses though – quite the reverse in fact.
How you can read anything into his last time out performance when he was clearly unfit is beyond me.
Everyone has Hardy Eustace as over the hill for last year’s Champion but then in the same breath hold up Sizing Europe’s defeat of Hardy Eustace this season as the best form in the race – you can’t have it both ways.
I think a strong pace is exactly what Sublimity wants as he has a high cruising speed and is a very fluent hurdler.
Whether or not the trainer is strange is irrelevant. He’s prepared him to win the Champion after one prep run before so see no reason to believe he can’t do it again
The trainer has acknowledged he has suffered in the past with mucus in the lungs but states he is clear now – refreshingly frank. He has also catagorically stated he has never bled.
As for Sublimity’s price I expect him to drift and will be looking to step in if he does (subject of course to him looking good in the pre-parade ring)
March 10, 2008 at 14:14 #149469Denman (Hennesy) and Sizing Europe (AIG) weren’t fully fit yet their natural ability allowed them to overcome that lack of fitness. Even an honourable defeat in the Boylesports would have given me some encouragement for Sublimity, but the horse was mullered 19l by the strong pace. Up and down on the spot from before the last.
Last year was a soft Champion Hurdle, they went nothing more than a reasonable pace yet still slowed down from the top of the hill to the finish (compared to 2006), evidence to me that Brave Inca and Hardy Eustace were past their very best. A real champion hurdler should have been able to finish a lot quicker given the moderate earlier pace. Afsoun was only beaten 3l, where is Afsoun now?
I agree about the Sizing Europe / Hardy Eustace formline but for me Sizing is improving and has run well this year something that Sublimity hasn’t done.
Perhaps Sublimity is clear of all his health problems but I cant believe they haven’t impacted significantly on his preparations.
Fair enough about Carr, its not relevant that I thinks he’s strange but I certainly wouldnt be betting Sublimity on his bullishness.
FWIW I dont think SE is any value either, I’d be on Osana at the price.
March 10, 2008 at 14:35 #149473I’m going to contradict myself; I don’t think Sublimity will win, but I won’t be surprised if he wins.
I still think last year’s form is a little ropey – just watch it – it’s on YouTube – cruises round challenges approaching the last – runs through it and runs up and down 100 yards from the line. Hardy and Inca had ‘gone’ in my view. Add his only run in the Bula, – and he can’t win.
But on the other hand, he does have a high cruising speed, how long can he stay cruising?? Why has he only had one run this year? Does he have fragile legs like See You Then? I’m never happy about horses having one or two unsatisfactory runs the turning up at Cheltenham and winning. To me, it makes a mockery of the sport, and is one of my problems with Cheltenham being the be all and end all of the season.March 10, 2008 at 14:39 #149476Sublimity has had the same preperation as last year. One run after Xmas.
Can someone send me a hyperlink with firm details of his supposed health problems ?
March 10, 2008 at 14:46 #149480When evaluating Sublimity I think its important to look at this years and last years prep race’s individually. Its also important to look at last years Champion Hurdle and how it was run and do similar with this years renewal.
Just saying he’s had the same prep and won the race already is not enough imo.
March 10, 2008 at 15:09 #149493It’s not good enough to cite supposed training setbacks when there is no evidence either.
March 10, 2008 at 15:26 #149497If a Cheltenham horse farts he has a health problem.
March 10, 2008 at 20:37 #149565Having been pretty steady in the markets for so long, I see Sublimity has gone for a little stroll this evening. Someone at the course reported he’s not in top shape?
March 10, 2008 at 20:52 #149570Sublimity has had the same preperation as last year. One run after Xmas.
No he hasnt

No he hasnt
Maybe he celebrates Christmas early

Incidentally, despite being as big as a bull, his prep run this year was about 30lbs better than the form of his prep run last season…
