Betfair radio presenter doing his best to gloss over any comment on the Findlay verdict. Same bloke would rather be dropped in a vat of scalding acid rather than ever offer an opinion that might be considered 1% controversial imo.
An admirable interjection by Neesom. A dissident in North Korea.
July 15, 2010 at 13:45 #306638I thought the same, we really do have some awful presenters of the sport in this country, couldn’t they just show the racing without the presenters?
July 15, 2010 at 19:06 #306698Alex Steedman made plenty of comment on the original verdict when presenting on Timeform Radio if I recall correctly. He’s also a top class anchor in my experience, and a look through the archives will confirm as much for those who might detect a bias towards a colleague.
There’s also a general confusion about the role of a racing presenter – it is not the same as that of a critical journalist and therefore an anchor of a racing programme is not necessarily at liberty to foist his/her political views upon a listening/viewing public. In this case, I believe that Alex Steedman is being unfairly painted. Should he write an opinion piece in the Scotsman, say, then any criticism would be more valid imo.
July 15, 2010 at 19:33 #306705On a landmark day for British racing his glossing over of the issue is completely unacceptable, Rory. Thankfully he had a colleague today not so fast with the sweeping brush.

Tell that to Hislop. Certainly doesn’t seem to be RUK policy in the the thousands of hours I’ve spent watching the thing.
July 15, 2010 at 19:43 #306708No first names Cav? Aren’t they worth that in your eyes?
July 15, 2010 at 19:56 #306715Just a professional critique of Alex, Rory, no more no less. I’ve made my admiration for the majority (though not all) of Lydia’s work elsewhere.
I have no personal axe to grind with any personalities. I’m concerned about the sport, that’s all.
What amazes me is that corruption in racing will directly effect the livelihoods of the racing media as the sport shrinks, yet they are almost to a man, silent.

Incredible really.

Cav you talk as though corruption in racing will impact on those involved professionally as if its taking over the sport in recent times! Its never affected the media in the last 40yrs and it certainly wont now! Everybody knows the capital of corruption is the All weather races and yet it survives 52 weeks a year! Paranoia is setting in on here at the moment about corruption, the day the Cheltenham Gold Cup is rigged is the day i will pack it in
July 15, 2010 at 20:58 #306731Corruption in racing has been going on longer than we will ever care for, and yet it has still survived to this day.
I was told 30 years ago from a jockey friend that he was told to deliberately stop a horse and I was told the same thing from a completely different jockey just eight years ago.
In the instance of the latter, just reading the form (around the time I was told) of the horse and it’s plainly obvious what the connections were up to. Obviously you wouldn’t know this without being told, but I’m just trying to highlight that jockeys get told to get horses beat probably week in week out in my opinion.

Naughty, TAPK! Looking forward to all the half fit novice hurdlers and chasers from October to January, sir.

Oh, and you’d make a tidy profit backing fancied horses on the AW – as you well know.

Max,you know me!
You know as well as anyone who has spent a 1/4 of a century studying horseracing that Non triers exist and they exist for a reason, its all about handicapping, its not rocket science! Watch what comes out of the fog in last years Stewards Cup to chase home Genki,(TAPK had the 1st and 2nd by the way
)Thats what you call playing the system,it happens everyday!Evens and Odds
will be primed for it!! Another horse who"s handicap mark has been "manipulated" is
Collateral Damage
,he"s ready now!

No problem Cav – I’m just not a fan of surname-only rhetoric.
Regarding your opening post, I rather missed the inference that Alex was mindful of his employer in not criticising Findlay. There are a couple of points to make, the first being that this would have been an opportunity for pro-exchange propaganda if anything while more importantly I can confirm that all the TFR broadcasters bar Neil Munro are freelancers and that the closest we’ve ever come to being told to toe the party line is a very occasional e-mail from Stephen Burn asking for Betfair SPs to be given after races. There is no question of presenters/pundits being gagged per se.
July 16, 2010 at 15:54 #306868From what I saw yesterday, the facts on the case were reported & then Alex & Jonathan Neesom gave a reaction to something there was little detail to (there was no comment on RP website from Harry at the time).
I’m not sure what the OP wanted anyone to say on the matter.
Does he want Alex, or anyone else for that matter, to start making wild allegations about all & sundry?
I did’t see ATR, how did they cover it? Big Mac come steaming on, ranting & raving?
July 16, 2010 at 16:33 #306876I like ALL the Betfair Radio presenters. The guests however are less than desired, except Terry Norman, who is God.
July 16, 2010 at 18:15 #306890Aaah, I thought the OP was talking about RUK. He’s talking about what Alex was saying on Betfair radio right?
Well, that’s not too difficult to answer is it?
No one in their right mind is going to make comments about the rights & wrongs of the appeal when they are working on Betfair radio are they?
I’m still unsure what the OP wants? Would he go on radio & start pontificating on the Findlay case? Especially when Harry has obviously got himself a good lawyer?
July 16, 2010 at 19:44 #306911Minor point, but it is Timeform Radio, not Betfair Radio. Has been for two years or so. Don’t worry, plenty of the presenters/pundits have made the same mistake.

Thanks, Rory. I’m happy to be corrected on that one, apologies to Alex Steedman for the inference, although again, I find his willingness to gloss over such a landmark decision, unacceptable.

Since Glorious Goodwood 2008, according to my notes. Gracious, where has the time gone…
