I’m sure I started a thread on this last year but what a joke. The mare’s novice at one point had nearly all the horses facing the other direction and yesterday’s MGM Cup half a dozen stood no chance from the off.
The more I know the less I understand.
March 12, 2026 at 14:24 #1758933For the Festival they have to straighten the starts so they are not coming in off a bend because the horses on the outside have to come in faster than those on the inside because they are covering more ground (just to stay level) but when they do that those on the inside speed up and then they all coming in too quickly
The jockeys are certainly not helping matters but the proceedure is fundamentally flawed and the fact that the BHA are now set to review their own review from last year’s starting issues sums up British Racing in a nutshell.
March 12, 2026 at 14:26 #1758937They’ve not been good have they. I do sympathise a little bit with the starters though because the jockeys are not helping and because the front runners keep winning its a bit of a virtuous circle, everyone wants the same spot etc. Is there enough room? Sounds like Richard Hoiles had some good ideas. Perhaps they should have a chat with him prior to next year.
March 12, 2026 at 14:35 #1758942I don’t know what the solution is but it has been very unsatisfactory.

Spot on. Simple physics, a child could understand. The Household Cavalry and the RCMP have a wheel as part of their musical rides. 1:04 inthe video below- the inside horse is walking slowly , the outside horse is cantering, and each spoke is only 8 horses wide:
March 12, 2026 at 14:53 #1758954Standing start every race. Problem solved. As it is it’s too much of a lottery as jockeys dont listen and starter guessing when to let them go.
