Christ! Looking at it more closely and wearing brandy goggles – would it be fantasy to suggest BB couldn’t reverse a 3&1/2 defeat by Punjabi on ground and a track more suited? I know it were Punjabi’s first run of the season and you’d expect him to improve a bit, but BB will surely be a good few pounds better off in this scenario? Quite frankly, I’m starting to doubt the form of P’s races tbh (brandy goggles possibly). He beats Sublimity every time but what exactly does this form represent? Is he really that much improved from last season?….not on the face of it I’d suggest, and I’d readily oppose him now.
My head now tells me – I think – that BB has the best chance of winning.December 26, 2008 at 10:00 #199195Harchibald, no danger. Only kidding but I’d never write him off (until he comes off the bridle and his a*se collapses).
Punjabi for me in this one – get on!
December 26, 2008 at 16:01 #199233I’m not fancying Punjabi for this. Does hne really have more natural speed than some of his rivals? I don’t think so I think he’s a good stayer with his fair share of speed but I’m not sure this race will be run to suit him.
There is no confirmed front runner. Punjabi will race prominently so too probably will Afsoun but I don’t expect them to set a stinging pace this race will have much more of an emphasis on speed than stamina especially with the going good.
I think it’ll suit those horses that love a sharp track which brings in Snap Tie, Pierrot Lunaire and Harchibald.
Against Harchibald is the fact that he will be held up and the more prominent horses won’t be coming back to him so I’d prefer a horse with speed that will be ridden closer to the pace and may get first run. Pierrot and Snap Tie are adaptable horses that will be ridden just off the pace. both have winning form on sharp tracks both will like the ground and on ratings I have them pretty similar. Could be a case of which one gets first run.
Preference just for Pierrot Lunaire because he has Ruby on board.
December 26, 2008 at 16:44 #199245I’ve backed Straw Bear.
His price looks based on a couple of moderate performances over fences, and he ran a huge race over C&D last season. At around 14/1, I think he represents outstanding value.

I agree with you there.
14/1 is a huge price in my opinion.
I also think, he simply hasn’t taken to fencing. He is a small horse, and i dont think the horse is suited to the chasing game. He won the race last year, on the back of a great ride from McCoy. A very attractive price.
I do think Blue Bajan could run a good race, the track will suit, the pace should suit and the horse wants good ground, which he will get today.
December 26, 2008 at 17:26 #199253Pierrot Lunaire ran Binocular close over this coure and distance before slamming Blue Bajan at Aintree.
Paul Nicholls expected the horse to benefit from his first start this season and he took a tired looking fall at the last that day. He’s been given time to recover from those exertions and has a decent turn of foot. Progressive.

I agree with you grassy but am going to stick my neck out and side with Pierrot Lunaire at 5-1 here, he needs to make significant improvement and leave his last run behind but he looks to have a lot in his favour, and am hopeful he can hold his own in this company.
December 26, 2008 at 19:15 #199269Fantastic race.
Much quicker pace than I expected I’m surprised Ruby made as much use of Pierrot Lunaire early on, he and Straw Bear set the race up for a hold up horse and that suited Harchibald perfectly.
December 26, 2008 at 19:17 #199271Well that was a great run from Harchibald.
Bizarre race though, Afsoun, Pierrot Lunaire and Punjabi all fallers.
Straw Bear went too quick i think, which meant that himself, Punjabi and Pierrot Lunaire were tiring quite quick.
The second time that Pierrot Lunaire has fallen over hurdles in as many runs, but luckily, the horse is up and seems ok.
December 26, 2008 at 19:20 #199274Shocking piece of jockeying from Walsh, McCoy and Gerraghty, it seemed like they thought they were riding 3 milers over 2 miles.
The fast pace brought out the best in harchibald though and it was good to see him get a win up for those that have kept the faith in him.
December 26, 2008 at 19:21 #199275Didn’t have a bean on but I was screaming Harchibald home.

Ah! Class…

.
Hmmm, must agree to a large extent I didn’t think they had their finest hours. After they’d gone a mile I thought Harchibald or Snap Tie would win coming from off the pace those at the fore set the race up for them.
Pierrot Lunaire though is fast becoming a disappointment could be an expensive horse to follow.

Brillliant to see him win again he simply must be one of the best horse never to win a Champion Hurdle. If he didn’t have that chink in his armour that stopped him getting up the hill at Cheltenham who knows how many he could have won.

I think its a stamina issue Fist. He gets home on sharp track but at Cheltenham he runs outta puff so finds little.
December 26, 2008 at 19:27 #199279The ground suited him today, anything less than good ground and he is less effective.
I did think McCoy et al were going too fast to be able to sustain their horses efforts over the trip.
Snap Tie does seem to be a good horse though doesnt he. Has beaten the Champion Hurdler this season and he ran another very good race today.
December 26, 2008 at 19:32 #199281That was really great, what a character this horse is.
All is forgiven.
