The atmosphere was good – yes the booze was flowing (perhaps somebody can explain to me why people have to drink alcohol in order to enjoy themselves. That’s a serious question – I really do not get it).
Good question.
Now can somebody please explain to me why people have sex in order to enjoy themselves. That is a very serious question. You aren’t seriously comparing the two are you?
September 14, 2013 at 21:19 #451289You did come back via J3 of M18 to M1 South Paul I hope??
Eventually – after the grand tour of Doncaster

I can understand implementing one way systems at big race meetings but to force you out of a car park in one particular direction then not provide any other signs to give you a clue as to which way to then go isn’t very helpful.
If I didn’t have the sat-nav I would probably be going round the centre of Doncaster in ever decreasing circles

Should be a doddle getting out of Doncaster,I come out the Car park with the racecourse facing me and its left to J4 which takes 10 mins or Right to J3 which also takes 10 mins.Getting back to the M1 from my local course Nottingham is a bloody joke,Richard Hughes hates it!
September 15, 2013 at 02:45 #451316As mainly a jumping man the leger is one of my favourite flat races, also belive that Doncaster is a sleeping giant in the jumping world and would a more fitting home for the betfair chase

Totally agree re Nottingham.
Would normally agree with you re Donny but the car parking arrangements were different yesterday and I ended up an one of the "extra" car parks which in theory gives an easier exit (it did) but onto an unfamiliar route.

September 15, 2013 at 17:08 #451370Take away the Lincoln and St Leger what else is there?
Well there’s Racing Post Trophy, November Handicap and Great Yorkshire Chase days but I’d agree that such a fine track with excellent facilties is otherwise an underachiever: that run of summer evening meetings is poor potatoes indeed
It might be overlooked but during the year-or-so’s closure when the new stand was being built the turf was also resown/relaid and the fences rebuilt; the latter are now, in my opinion, at least the equal of any other Grade 1 NH course and are woefully underused
In the bleak midwinter when other tracks are struggling with heavy ground and inspections Doncaster with its excellent turf and light free-draining soil is sitting forlorn and idle
As has been mentioned it would be an ideal track to host the Betfair Chase and all those other once-great Haydock chases
However, being another gaff lover, the weekday (and weekend actually) NH meetings at Donny have provided many a marvellous day: run of the mill racing and a sparse crowd in first-class surroundings
Moehat: if you’re reading this I suggest you choose one of these as your first visit to Doncaster during your imminent lady of leisuredom and be another to fall in love with a quiet Town Moor
The St Leger meeting has been buggered around with race schedule-wise but it remains my favourite Flat meeting. The old Wednesday with Portland, St Leger Yearling and Park Hill; and particularly the Thursday with Scarbrough, Park, May Hill, Doncaster Cup and Sceptre were oh-so golden days to be on-course
York and Doncaster: big grade 1 racecourses both but chalk and cheese: isn’t that the charm of racing in the UK?
September 15, 2013 at 17:33 #451374The trouble with Donny and NH is that the season is so short. As the flat races there into November and starts again straight after Cheltenham there’s only a short window for NH – about 8-9 meetings IIRC.
It is a good winter track and deserves a Saturday meeting when it could really come to front stage with a top conditions race. The Grimthorpe and Great Yorkshire are both decent races but don’t attract the best. A graded 2.5 mile hurdle in early Jan might be good.

I was going to leave a comment on your blog until I saw you need to fill in those Captcha questions – I need at least 3 attempts at those, so opted out.
Good start to your breakdown of tracks. It always tickles me that there is no watering system at Bath.

I remember back in the ‘Sporting life’days the Paper would quote the going at Bath as ‘Very Firm’ or even ‘Hard’……

September 15, 2013 at 23:46 #451430I think the Leger is fab, a much more interesting puzzle than many of the other classics and a truly unique contest.

There is a shuttle bus laid on from the bus station (next to the railway station) to the course. If I recall correctly it’s a couple of quid return.

There are direct Derby to Doncaster trains that take about an hour and others that require a change at Sheffield
In my experience the shuttle buses run only on Saturdays and for the big meetings like the one just finished
It’s about a mile from station to course and quite a pleasant walk along Hallgate and the broad boulevard of Bennetthorpe, though I tended to get a taxi or aforementioned courtesy bus there and walk back via the Rockingham Arms and…
