The whole St Leger festival including the Saturday St Leger will be shoved onto More4 to allow the paralympics to be shown on Channel 4.
It is also being claimed there will be no terrestrial racing on December 31 and Channel 4 want to finish with Kempton and Chepstow on December 27.

July 28, 2016 at 12:50 #1257980Apart from the lack of HD I cannot see what the problem is – More 4 is available free to air on Freeview, Satellite and Cable so anyone who wants to watch the racing can – let’s be realistic more people will be interested in the Paralympics than the racing anyway, so you can understand why the decision has been made, it make commercial sense even just in terms of advertising revenue.
As for the blank Saturday at the end of the year – I’m not sure what the contractual position is – I’m guessing, worse case there may be a financial penalty for C4 but if it’s less than the cost of covering the meeting they’ll probably consider it worthwhile. Being brutally frank nobody will die if racing is not shown on terrestrial TV for just one day.
July 28, 2016 at 13:11 #1257989Yes and the racing will be on ITV on Sunday 1st Jan. Just means I will now change my 20 mile walk from Sunday to Saturday weather permitting. So same here does not bother me in the slightest what channel this is on. Well that’s not true as when I flick over in the ads and then flick back to C4 who will also by then be showing the ads, I’ll wonder why such a long ad break

I can’t believe there’d be any sort of penalty. C4 have bought the rights to broadcast horse racing, but not the obligation to do so.
But, I agree, not showing this relatively unimportant days’ racing is of little consequence. We may well see ITV doing the same on a few Saturdays.

These truisms have been made repeatedly Paul but seem to fall on blind eyes here on TRF; it’s beyond me why anyone is bothered which freeview channel the racing is shown on
Shifting the racing between C4 and More4 in order to cater for another, probably more popular event, on the ‘main’ chaneel is surely no different to the days when racing was shared by BBC1 and BBC2; and no one complained then did they?
We members of the titchy racing fraternity are fortunate indeed that so much of our niche interest is still shown free-to-air on universal freeview
