Ginger, I’ve watched it over and over. The issue seems to be that you think BB is entitled to push the filly to keep her in (assuming you now accept there was contact initiated by O’D prior to the bump?).

If a horse attempts to come off his line when boxed in, and push his way out, then the jockey boxing him in is entitled to push back – that physical contact is within the rules.

But when the boxed in horse is holding her racing line, and not trying to get out, it is not within the rules for the one boxing her in to push her in and off her line. Do you agree on that?

And do you now accept there was contact prior to the ‘big bump’?

    Oh Joe,
NO I do not accept BB was “entitled to push the filly to keep her in”; and have seen NO “contact initiated by O’D prior to the bump”. In the first interference two out I’ve seen NO contact initiated by BB.

BB was entitled to move his horse alongside, giving SV little room to maneuver (do you call that “Leaning in”? I don’t) “keeping her in” a pocket without physically “pushing”/contact – ie within the rules. CO’D broke those rules only in the final furlong (second interference) where imo it was six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Do you now accept your assertion that Atzeni went for a “clear gap” is untrue Joe?

If not, please tell me at what point (giving minutes and seconds) did Atzeni go for a “clear gap”; because the frame you show is clearly after interference has taken place and therefore misleading.

    Also:
Here are some quotes from Sportinglife:

    http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/article/465/10002776/simple-verse-awarded-st-leger-following-appeal-to-bha

Atzeni, rider of Simple Verse, admitted in his cross-examination by John Kelsey-Fry QC that he did cause the first piece of interference, just inside the two-furlong pole, but only due to the fact his mount had been lent on by Bondi Beach.

“Graeme McPherson QC, arguing the case for connections of the Qatar Racing-owned Simple Verse, acknowledged interference had taken place but argued Bondi Beach had enough time to recover and go past”.

Charlton (summing up the panel’s findings) said: “The first incident was caused by Andrea Atzeni manoeuvring out. It did cause Bondi Beach a loss of momentum, however Simple Verse was going better at the time and went a head or neck up partly because of the bump and partly because she was travelling better.

So not only does the panel think Azteni “did cause” the first interference, but Atzeni himself and Simple Verse’s connections aknowledged it.

Do you still think it wholly Colm’s fault?

Ginge it never was wholly Colms fault,it was six of one half a dozen the other but Colm argued the better case initially.Had the Doncaster stewards accepted it was both parties to blame then they had to let the result stand. They didn’t and justice had to wait to be done. The Doncaster stewards must feel like numpties now but we can all feel like that in this game.

Ginger, here is the verbatim exchange referred to in the Sporting Life piece: (italics/bolding are mine)

Using the patient, pleasant and extraordinarily effective style for which he is known, Kelsey-Fry extracted from Atzeni an admission that he had deliberately pushed Bondi Beach out of the way in order to obtain a clear run. “But Bondi Beach started it by leaning in on me,” Atzeni insisted.

“All I did was get back on my line. If Bondi Beach hadn’t leaned on me, I’d wait for Storm The Stars to kick and then go with him. There was plenty of time and I was on the best horse in the race. He’s got no right to do that to me.” Atzeni went so far with this line of reasoning that Kelsey-Fry asked him if his manoeuvre had been a kind of retaliation, which the jockey denied.

There is no report of Atzeni’s claim being denied by O’Donoghue, probably because it is quite plain for most to see that BB is pushing the filly in and taking her ground. That you cannot see this, well, there is nothing more I can do.

As for the clear gap, of course it was after the interference she went for it. No gap existed prior to that. The gap became available, as I’ve said time and again, due to the filly coming out (to reclaim her line) as the colt came in on her.

    Hmm, italics worked, bolding didn’t

That’s not what Joe is arguing though.

The only one doing the barging was Colm O’Donoghue

C o’D came in twice and was the aggressor throughout.

    :negative:

So what you’re now saying Joe is: Simple Verse went for a “clear gap” after the filly had made that clear gap.

For what it’s worth I’m with Joe all the way here, I could never agreed that keeping the filly pushed up against the rail was good race riding, In my opinion COD was using his horse almost as a weapon and now it has backfired.
The Appeal Panel has decided Simple Verse keeps her race, the race that she won on her merit as the best horse in the race, let’s not take anything away from that and be happy that the oldest race in our history has been left with an untarnished record, end of story…please guys :rose:
