It was telling on C4 before the race when Nick Luck point blank asked Henderson is the horse in better form now than at any time during last season….the one word answer was yes!
Will he be so forthcoming with an answer to the question of will he allow Simonsig and Sprinter Sacre to clash in the Tingle Creek and/or the Champion Chase or will Simonsig go the Ryanair route?

Why do you need to ask the question LD?
It would be crazy to allow Simonsig and Sprinter to take each other on when Simonsig stays 2m4f.Value Is EverythingNovember 15, 2015 at 15:51 #1221869Good performance today.
However, keeping on topic, after seeing SS in the flesh winning the Chandler on heavy pulling a bus id suggest anyone saying he cannot run to his best form on soft ground is wrong.
So Baron Von Greenbacks amateur dramatics yesterday were indeed nonsense.

November 15, 2015 at 16:03 #1221870Sprinter won the Melling Chase over 2m4f so that is a bit of a moot point imho and shouldn’t the owners ultimately decide where their horse runs and not pander to the trainer? Afterall, Simonsig is 9 rising 10 and with his injury history this may be their one proper chance at the big G1 race and a Champion Chase looks far better on the CV than an Ryanair (aka the race you run in if you don’t stay the Gold Cup distance or your not quick enough for the Champion Chase).
His hard pulling style is crying out for a strongly run 2m race rather than trying to get him to settle in over 2m4f and quite frankly it was fraustrating as a race fan listening to Henderson state that he didn’t want them to clash the following season after Simonsig’s stroll in the Arkle. Injury to both horses saved him from having to deal with it but if I was Simonsig’s owners I would be telling him that all roads lead to the Champion Chase regardless.
Granted what race fans want to see is unlikely to be cared about by connections but who wouldn’t want to see Un De Sceaux blazing off from the front with Simonsig & Sprinter Sacre stalking him coming down the hill?
November 15, 2015 at 16:16 #1221871A massive puzzler to me why over the sticks the trainers are allowed by owners to tailor entries to suit their own requirements.
The Rynair is a boil on the backside of NH Championship racing.

A classic example of polarised opinions in this game – I think it’s been a wonderful race; long may it continue

Absolutely and utterly delighted with that. Never ever got a buzz like that before.

The race was introduced as a Grade 2 off the bat which was galling enough. Thisthatandtother and Fondmort won the two runnings under G2 status, and as these 2 horses had won a grand total of zero G1 chases in open company between them, some genius decided that a promotion to G1 was required.
It’s robbed us of depth to the GC and CC for no better reason I can see than sheer greed.

November 15, 2015 at 17:09 #1221876That was like the old Sprinter. The jump at the last ditch to pull himself to the front was spectacular. I am not quite sure he is back to his very best but it will take a good one to beat him now.
November 15, 2015 at 17:14 #1221878That’s why I worry when there are mumblings about extending the Festival to another day – the only category we are missing at the moment is a G1 2m4f hurdle and then pretty much every horse will be catered for (a jumping Breeders Cup).
Granted we have had some great finishes for the Ryanair but how about turning it into a handicap like the Paddy Power Gold Cup?

Hi TTC,
I’ll give you that it’s not a Cheltenham Gold Cup
or a QM Champion Chase, but I think it does have
it’s place at the Festival
It is a hugely competitive race won by the
likes of CUE CARD, DYNASTE, IMPERIAL COMMANDER (who
went on to win the Gold Cup) and twice brilliantly by
ALBERTAS RUN.I think you’re being a tad hard on the race.
November 15, 2015 at 17:28 #1221880Whoooohooooooo!!
That was fantastic. Well done SS!! And a few bob on it!!
November 15, 2015 at 17:32 #1221881I’ll admit to a wee bit of bias as it’s been a fine betting race for me, but, away from that, I’d hate to see any changes.
A 100% healthy Cue Card could have won a QM, or, indeed a Gold Cup, but the Ryanair proved perfect for him in his 2013 rout, and there have been some magnificent finishes.
November 15, 2015 at 17:47 #1221888We now have a Mares novice race named after the Legendary Dawn Run.
What a sick joke that naming is, Dawn Run nowadays would probably win a Mares novice, a Mares Hurdle, and maybe a Rynair.
The days of horses going down in history is fast being eroded through sheer dilution. I’m amazed the majority approve, but I suppose its each to their own.

November 15, 2015 at 18:00 #1221892Well done Nicky Henderson, to ask a big question of such a magnificent horse, that already owes no one anything, believing in the re-habilitation and reading the horses ability at home. Putting yourself and your horse out there to be shot at by all the doubters and letting Nico ride, best performance of bringing a horse back from injury I have ever seen.
November 15, 2015 at 18:13 #1221894Well Chief??

November 15, 2015 at 18:58 #1221899Fantastic to see Sprinter Sacre back in the winners enclosure today. He is some machine when in that kind of form.
Just goes to show that some trainers can get them race fit at home when required – it does help when the raw materials are top quality.
I think the Ryanair is a cracker of a race. There are a few other races at the Festival that I’d remove before this one.
