The wonderful race mare Snow Fairy has been retired to stud. I hope she has a long and happy career as a mum. Good Luck girl xx
July 16, 2013 at 14:52 #445806Good luck to Snow Fairy, she was a terrific servant and a credit to her trainer.
I’ll go to my grave never knowing how she got beat in a nursery as a young girl when I was waiting on her for a squillion quid in a roll up. Not enough horses like her on the flat coming back year after year and forming a bond with the followers of the sport. A Star.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 16, 2013 at 22:26 #445841A real star. Long and happy life in the paddock for her hopefully. Brilliantly trained.
July 16, 2013 at 22:35 #445842We’ve had some amazing racemares over the past few years. I wonder who will fill the shoes of Snow Fairy, Danedream and Goldikova [not to mention Zenyatta and Rachel]? I’ve followed the careers of so many over the years, starting from Phebu then Dubacilla, Bosra Sham and Ouija Board. When you get a good racemare they are very special.
July 16, 2013 at 22:57 #445844Ed Dunlop has done exceptionally well with both Ouija Board and Snow Fairy getting longevity out of both and plenty of Group 1’s in the cabinet. Snow Fairy was my 6 year old sons favourite horse, he shed a few tears when he came home from school and I told him the news the little softy he takes after his mother…..

July 17, 2013 at 09:17 #445852How about writing to Ed Dunlop and asking for a photo for your son? I’m sure he’d do so. [actually, get your son to write; no one could refuse that, could they?]
July 17, 2013 at 09:22 #445853Yeah, I think that’s a great idea Moehat, thanks. Don’t suppose anybody has an address to send it to?

July 17, 2013 at 14:50 #445873A thousand curses on them if they don’t!
July 17, 2013 at 21:08 #445892All good wishes to Snow Fairy, what a fantastic trainer of fillies Ed Dunlop is, not only Ouija Board and don’t forget he also trained Lailani who won 3 x Group 1’s in 2001 in the form of the Irish Oaks, The Nassau Stakes and the Fillies & Mares Turf at Belmont Park.
Sariska trained by Michael Bell was another filly that I followed and I’ll never forget the ill fated Triptych my most favourite of all mares who was in foal to Mr Prospector when she had a fatal accident with a farm vehicle at the stud. What might have been if she had gone on to produce progeny like herself, poor girl, think I cried for a week when she went.
Hope your son gets his photo of Snow Fairy Nathan
. Ed was extremely generous with Ouija Board when we went to his Open Day held at his old stables at Gainsborough Lodge in the Hamilton Road, Newmarket, just prior to her Nassau Stakes victory. He led her round his parade ring so that we could all congratulate her on her previous win in the Prince of Wales at Royal Ascot and she later went on to win the Breeders Cup at Churchill Downs…what a mare.Snow Fairy deserves her retirement and we shall miss her but look forward to seeing her babies in a few years time.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 18, 2013 at 09:57 #445913If I’m not working I pick my lad up from school which is about 5 -6 furlongs away from home. So he will say ‘can we race home?’ He’s always Snow Fairy and I’m either Canford Cliffs or Ouija Board and not only do we have to run like we are horses with a sort of skipping action which is embarrassing enough but he makes me commentate, we don’t half get some strange looks from passers by. He always wins but from the 10 lengths distance I keep, it looks to me with his arms flapping and tapping his leg with his hand he could be done for excessive use of the whip.

July 18, 2013 at 11:04 #445918When I was little I drew lots of pictures of horses on sheets of paper and, each day I had to decide which one I was going to ride that day when I went to the corner shop. I’ve got a feeling there was something similar in National Velvet as well. I know one of ‘my horses’ was called Arabian Night and it was a grey.
July 18, 2013 at 22:30 #445948The S.O. reminded me tonight of a conversation we had with someone in our racing club who said to always sent a stamped addressed envelope when asking for a photo etc as they get so many requests from people.

This reminded me of my childood, most of which I spent "cantering" around like a horse too! I went one step further and decided to build a grand national style cross country course in the garden. I gathered bits of fallen wood and branches of fir to build the brush fences. Then I dug a hole in the ground, stole the washing up basin from the kitchen and stuck it in the hole. Filled it up with water and hey presto…a water jump!!
Endless hours of fun
July 22, 2013 at 17:21 #446228Well Moehat, I’m very pleased to say the photo arrived today, my Son was delighted to receive it, he wants it framed and on his bedroom wall. We didn’t need to send the letter as the email done the trick much to my sons annoyance who had only written long letter out yesterday after telling me the email would be enough. Hey ho, I’ve told him to write a thank you letter now.

Nice that Ed signed it aswell.

July 22, 2013 at 21:03 #446249I’m well chuffed about that! Yes, he must write a thank you letter. Or, might get brownie points when he goes back to school if he shows his teacher the letter he wrote along with a copy of the photo. Don’t want all that effort to go to waste. Wish my kids had showed an interest in racing.
July 23, 2013 at 07:49 #446266Great result, I knew Ed Dunlop wouldn’t let your son down.

Perhaps one day you could take him along to Newmarkets Open Day Nathan, here is the link:

Think that’s Ed Dunlop with Ouija Board in one of the pictures
You can visit the local yards that participate and get up close to possible stars of the future and some old favourites.
