I think the most pertanent comment on the current funding squabbles came from Richard Hoiles on RUK, when he finished off by saying that we need to be moving towards reconciliation. Endless fighting has done racing no good nor the betting industry.
It’s not quite the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, but we’re not far off. We’ve got a debate tonight where a couple of young gun late subs are rolled out: David O’Reilly for Betfair and our very own Paul Struthers. Could we see a truce?
I’m picturing it now:
Paul: We didn’t really want 150 bars. Why don’t we meet in the middle somewhere, sort out a funding mechanism going forward that doesn’t put racing at a competitive disadvantage with zombies machines and other sports and move on?
The O’s: Sounds good to us Paul. Tell you what, in return we’ll stop cheering on every fall in racing turnover and using the drops as a baragining tool and start promoting racing again to its deserved place as the undisputed heavyweight champ of betting products.
Cue group love in:
November 1, 2010 at 14:17 #325739No chance of anything but racing being allowed to accept sweet fa with some sort of face saving whitewash. Owners, trainers and staff will have 2 take a cut coz of the economy stupid!
November 1, 2010 at 16:40 #325760Coward isn’t even showing up.
British Racing is dying unless the levy is sorted out. They wait too long and mass exportation of owners will head across the english channel
November 1, 2010 at 16:58 #325762The only thing I’ve seen emigrating so far are Rabble leaders, leaving behind their ‘campaign messages’ on infinite loop.
November 1, 2010 at 17:53 #325768I want him to explain where all the money is going.
November 1, 2010 at 20:03 #325790Very statesmanlike performances from all three I thought.
Quote of the night from my mate Paul on his wish for a levy-replacement, that ‘hopefully for racing
relying on your customer losing’.
Surely this is the man to take racing forward from the ashes left behind by Mr Potter, Mr by name and nature and the course saboteurs.
November 1, 2010 at 20:44 #325808Still managed to give a soundbite to another tote-monopoly-fantasist punter: "The sooner we have Tote only betting in this country, the better."
That ship sailed 50 years ago pal, so try growing up.

November 1, 2010 at 20:54 #325813The £130m – £150m was "…a starting point for negotiation…" and not "…the minimum for a reasonable settlement for racing…"
NOW they tell us.
Too late to save Roy (and possibly Coward), however…
November 1, 2010 at 21:18 #325815I expect they’re all in the green room now, clinking glasses, exchanging punting war stories, slapping backs and sketching out the future of racing.
November 1, 2010 at 22:30 #325825Glen , green room update , its about working out their severance packages ….
A very neutered programme , Paul held his own ok , but it was as Dennis Healy once said …like being savaged by a dead sheep ….
its Stalemate and the rats should be leaving anytime soon

November 2, 2010 at 07:48 #325865totally stage managed. BHA working with bookies as to best way to tell the industry its being screwed. Musn’t infuriate people too much. there, there Mr Owner can you just pay £700 to run for £1,600 prize money?

Doesn’t seem too unreasonable really given he’s probably just paid £50,000 to run for £1,600.
November 2, 2010 at 13:42 #325926I fear Paul was cut off just as he was about to get going there. He was making rapid late headway as the half hour was up.
I have a feeling that having funding that didn’t rely on punters losing was the start of an ‘I have a dream’ speech that never got into its stride due to time constraints.
I’m envisaging him calling for Roy and Coward to go, an extra place for punters on the board and the four vacancies to be filled by Boyce, Mordin, Naylor and Potts. Paul himself would take overall control of racing and lead it to the promised land of renewed popularity, with sectional times and the weighing of horses and tote exotics and no renweal of licenses for miscreants.
Paul Struthers has a dream ladies and gentleman………
November 2, 2010 at 15:46 #325937Glen ….if only mate , if only …..
But Racing will have to get rid of its trough feeders first and then have a go at that impossible dream ….
Right now its just empty talks of strikes and retaliation , followed by more shouting and barging as the ship flounders even deeper into the mire
Racing has run out of victims, now it needs to get rid of the impediments to progress
BTW Potts would be an excellent choice to speak for punters, he does actually have a bit of experience in that harrowed field
