I used to always prefer Sky. It used to seem to be much more in depth than many other news channels and covered more than just the UK news.
However, it has become very ‘magaziney’ in recent years and the incessant adverts drive me crazy (much like ATR!). Also it seems completely disinterested in anything that goes on abroad. So, I have switched to the Beeb for UK news, Euronews for European news and NDTV for the news from India. Seems to be the only way to get to hear about everything.
December 11, 2008 at 18:27 #196158I don’t watch much of either these days, though I’ve stuck in Sky as a protest vote against what I feel are rapdily declining standards in BBC News broadcasting. You used to be able to watch the news at 6 and then laugh heartily at the pathetic ITV Action News half an hour later, but not any more IMO.
December 11, 2008 at 19:58 #196194BBC News for me, by some margin.

December 11, 2008 at 20:41 #196206I tend to take a pretty jaundiced view of many news programmes nowadays. As time goes by they seem to become more like gossip shops, and sadly the BBC are as bad as any.

December 11, 2008 at 20:51 #196214Not that keen on either. The myth of BBC impartiality was blown apart again with the Obama coverage. I sometimes find the coverage a shade patronising. Jeremy Bowen’s middle east coverage is a near disgrace…
Sky is always quicker with the news (BBC was embarrasingly bad with 7/7 where Sky swept the floor)
What we need is Fox News…
December 11, 2008 at 22:12 #196236It’s all very censored in the UK – that’s something proven since I moved to Spain. Spanish news (despite me not understanding most of the language) is pretty much "livestock transporter overturns killing 3,000 pigs – and if you didn’t believe us, here’s what it looked like". etc. they aren’t scared of showing you what happened or how someone was arrested, what they found in X house etc.
Makes all UK news seem very very tame.

Im sure that Jeremy has a joke ready
Two cows in a field. One says "you heard about that mad cow disease?"
Other says "wont affect me… cos im a duck"
December 11, 2008 at 22:22 #196240No contest – like Jeremy said it is the BBC by miles, even though they are far from perfect.
In addition to Jeremy Bowen’s biased approach to the middle east, you have to add Orla "Bleeding Heart" Guerin to the hall of shame.
On the whole however BBC news coverage is better than most – thank goodness we don’t have American style "news" coverage.
One area where all British news channels have a black mark relates to coverage of South America – it hardly seems to exist!!!
December 11, 2008 at 22:24 #196242BBC Radio four news is quite superb IMO
The Today programme is the best news programme tv or radio.

If we are talking radio then the BBC World service has no equals anywhere in the world.

I’ll reprise the one I did on another thread a couple of days ago, as it’s the most relevant;
I saw a pig towing a waggon load of sausages the other day – he was drawing his own conclusions.
(sorry.)

Ah, but they covered the Ingrid Betancourt release a few weeks ago – that’s the South American coverage sorted for this year, then!

Agree to an extent, and it’s certainly finding itself played on my drive to my Proper Job more and more. However, I do find John Humphrys exhausting to listen to, far too enchanted as he is with his propensity to talk all over guests before they can get a word out. The likes of Jim Naughtie remain very measured inquisitors.

December 12, 2008 at 15:10 #196380I find Sky and BBC news appalling.
The standard of journalism at the BBC (not sure about Sky, I haven’t watched it for as long) has fallen to an all-time low.

December 12, 2008 at 16:45 #196402Anyway, I was watching Sky and they were about to go to a financial expert in the city. The presenter said "hello", then "hello are you there" etc. Anyway, I gathered she wasn’t going to get the bloke so I turned over to BBC and guess what, he is tabled a question by the beeb and starts talking to them 2 seconds after being on Sky and refusing to talk! Hillarious, they must somehow get in on U-Tube…
That would be funny provided his phone rings while live on BBC followed by some muttering under his breath about "fcukers from Sky"
