No surprise after a tough race Alan King has pulled the favourite out
January 27, 2012 at 09:44 #388474Hold On Julio a non-runner for tomorrow.
January 27, 2012 at 10:53 #388489You have to excuse Gaz. He just got out of bed and has only got one eye open
January 27, 2012 at 12:57 #388509Mmmm, I wonder who will be carrying my cash?

Calgary Bay knowing you! There would be worse bets to have. The horse is a favourite of mine too, really good horse!
Its a competitive race but so it should be,
Calgary Bay
can carry the weight around a course he likes,i’m only going up to get a picture of him, would have liked to see this ‘Sprinter Sacre’ in the flesh as i’ve said before he reminds me a lot of Calgary Bay but connections are running scared of ‘Menorah’!
Bos,you should be onSomersby
for the Ryanair and Gaz you should be on
Medermit
,i’m on both at 20/1 as its between the 2 and i cant split em!
January 27, 2012 at 13:00 #388511No, I’m afraid it was just a combination of ignorance and idleness on my part, Kingfisher. I did mean the National.
Have you done any for the National yet? As Private Eye journalists are wont to say: "I think we should be told!"
I have done
Calgary Bay
for the National at 50/1 Grimes and have had to support
Junior
at 20/1 even though i think he’s got No chance of getting round!
January 27, 2012 at 21:03 #388575Was impressed by Galaxy Rock at Cheltenham in a race that worked out very well. You can forget the Chepstow run.
Calgary Bay has to be there or thereabouts.
Will end up doing a combination exacta with these two and something else. Don’t like Aiteen33 though, or Carrickmines!
January 27, 2012 at 21:14 #388578I still think Menorah or Peddlers Cross might win the Arkle, so the former’s price looks good to me, especially if he wins well tomorrow; in the hope of course that he can rapidly become a fast and reliable chaser…
January 27, 2012 at 21:18 #388579Blog Extract:
If horses could blush with embarrassment, Wymott would be cherry coloured. The McCain chaser came into this season with a formline of 210/2121/111p and many had high hopes of him as a Grand National candidate at the least. He ran a good race in the Hennessy first time out this season when beaten under 7 lengths by Carruthers.
Next time he started 2/1 fav in the Tommy Whittle at Haydock where he chucked it when coming under pressure. His enthusiasm was no better next time at Sandown, packing it in as soon as he came under pressure.
He wears blinkers for the first time tomorrow but perhaps, what might make more of a difference to him is a jockey change. Jason Maguire has ridden him in all but one of his races (The Hennessy, G Lee took the mount in his best run this season). Brian Harding rides tomorrow. Maguire, skilled as he is, can be very hard on horses, and I just wonder if Wymott resents him. at 22/1 on Betfair (18/1 with bookmakers) I’m willing to pay to find out.
Not much point backing him EW. He’ll either be on a going day or not so the Betfair price is recommended.
I like the favourite in the race a lot – Shakalakaboomboom, but he is a real stayer imo and might find this on the sharp side, especially as he is not the most fluent of jumpers. (Geraghty does a fine job of letting him negotiate fences in his own style, though I was very surprised to hear his trainer nail him as a National type – I think the fences would terrify him).
But Wymott is well worth chancing at the price.

January 27, 2012 at 21:42 #388584In the style of Basil Brush?
January 27, 2012 at 21:46 #388585Can see Nicky Henderson & Barry Geraghty doing this in the winner’s enclosure if he wins.

Of course! Sentiment aside, I think he has a decent chance. Three miles around Donny is made for him and conditions are perfect. Lots of nice horses in oppostion, though – Aiteen Thirtythree, Wayward Prince and Shakalakaboomboom to name a few – but Shalimar Fromentro has certainly captured the attention of quite a few.
I backed the horse last time out at Aintree and he was going particularly well when departing at Becher’s. I don’t like placing too much faith in those returning to park fences after tackling the big obstacles, but he has the right man in the saddle to get him into a nice rhythm and could be anything.
My old pal will carry my cash, though!
January 28, 2012 at 09:24 #388635It does look a very wide open race.
I do think the favourite will run a big race. He ran no race in the Hennessy, and he is a lot better than that showing.
January 28, 2012 at 11:21 #388657I’ve just read Nicholls’ Betfair column and he has an excuse for why every single horse was beaten last time out. Amazing. Just think, if his horses didn’t suffer from illnesses or fitness or whatever else, he’d never get a loser. Incredible trainer

I’d be amazed if 1833 finishes in the top 15. Small-field a necessity for him.
January 28, 2012 at 15:08 #388711Calgary Bay just made this one of my best ever betting weekends! What a gutsy performance.
January 28, 2012 at 15:14 #388712^^You’re not the only one. I had a small 50p ew patent on The Giant Bolster (9/2), Midnight Chase (11/2) and Calgary Bay (12) and collected just over £360. Also had a small ew double on my old ‘Bay’ pals.
What a performance from the big lad, and full credit to Dominic Elsworth for an ultra cool, stylish ride. Executed to perfection.
Calgary Bay has been called a few names in the past, but he knuckled down under a mammoth weight and beat some very good horses. It’s all systems go for Aintree after that!
No doubt Gaz and Gord will be chuffed to bits, too. Thank-You, big lad!

Calgary Bay at Doncaster; 211
