Looks very bad, judging that he fell after getting up and also judging by Simon Holt’s voice which is rather concerned.
Hope I’m wrong…..November 13, 2016 at 14:10 #1272483Sadly confirmed, but very well handled by the entire RUK team…..
Rest in Peace Simonsig!
November 13, 2016 at 14:14 #1272484Very sad for connections and especially Nicky Henderson, today of all days.
Value Is EverythingNovember 13, 2016 at 14:16 #1272485Dont understand it, that wasnt a hard fall. It was a slippery soft ground ‘missed step’ type of fall.
So unfortunateNovember 13, 2016 at 14:19 #1272486Dont understand it, that wasnt a hard fall. It was a slippery soft ground ‘missed step’ type of fall.
So unfortunateI also thought that he had just stumbled/slipped a bit; to hear that he died as a result of that fall was shocking.
Rest in peace, Simonsig.
November 13, 2016 at 14:26 #1272491Broke a hind leg when falling. Who knows if it happened when he hit the fence or as a result of the fall. When the front legs are gone, the hind legs have nowhere to go and just hit the ground extremely hard. Too sad that he wasn’t retired after failing to sparkle in his three runs last season.
November 13, 2016 at 14:29 #1272493RIP, another of my favourites gone this week. This has been an awful week for NH racing.
November 13, 2016 at 14:52 #1272500To see Spinter Sacre getting lead round, looking so well and feeling
good about him retiring safe, to complete despair 20 minutes later
with this news. So sad, commiserations to all connections of Simonsig.November 13, 2016 at 15:24 #1272507Too sad that he wasn’t retired after failing to sparkle in his three runs last season.
True, it’s always sad. We all wish every fatality was retired one race sooner, Ruby; but you’re wrong about not sparkling.
Sprinter Sacre “failed to sparkle” plenty of times before coming back to win the Shloer Chase last season and then going on to recapture the Queen Mum Chase. Cue Card failed to sparkle before the epiglottis op – and many more we won’t go in to here…
That said, obviously fragile and before April last season I was one saying wish they’d retire Simonsig. However, connections proved me wrong…
…Despite being off over 5 months Simonsig’s star sparkled brightly, beaten only 3 1/4 lengths third to Gods Own in the Grade 1 Champion Chase at Punchestown. A performance rated by Timeform the equal of anything he’d shown before. So – without hindsight – think connections were justified having another go. There was still a chance Simonsig would make a Champion Chaser.
Just when connections thought they’ve got him back, this happens. So sad.

You’re kind of right about that run at Punchestown. But with the exception of the front two, there wasn’t much in the race besides the overraced Special Tiara who was PU I think.
They tried their luck in France afterwards and surely they had to try their luck over fences this season. I’m not blaming them for keeping him in training, obviously you can’t retire them if they are anywhere the 160s mark. But sometimes you just wish that something small would send them into retirement. Sprinter Sacre fully deserves his retirement and I wished the same would have applied to Simonsig.
I’m also not so sure whether they were looking into the sun when jumping the fences in the straight.November 13, 2016 at 18:35 #1272526Personally finding this very hard to cope with while still getting over losing Vautour and Avant Tout, Boondooma and Franklin D (flat) and earlier the much loved Kauto Star and in fact all those horses lesser known that have paid the ultimate price.

RIP Simonsig :( we will miss you so much and thoughts to those that loved and cared for you.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...November 13, 2016 at 19:58 #1272538I was already in tears seeing Sprinter Sacre’s lad crying. At least I often see lovely pictures of dear Bobsworth having a lovely retirement. What a terrible start to the season it’s been.
November 13, 2016 at 23:59 #1272577I’m going to find it difficult to watch the jumps this season Moe, we have lost so many much loved horses and losing Simonsig is a heartbreaker, such a beautiful grey I can’t bear to think about it :( devastating for everyone concerned.
Nice to hear about dear old Bobsworth though thanks for that update Moe.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...November 14, 2016 at 11:52 #1272626Woke up with a heavy heart this morning and my first thoughts were for those at Seven Barrows. I know how hard these things hit NH; a racing club I was a member of paid a visit there many years ago the day after they’d lost one of their horses and he was too upset to see anyone. I can’t help but think of all the hours of work that has been put into Simonsig, but the thing that upsets me the most was NH saying how Triolo D’alene will miss his pal; I know how horses get attached to their chums.
November 14, 2016 at 13:18 #1272634You’ve hit the nail on the head there Moe, it was the same with Franklin D. Michael Bell had posted up a lovely picture of FranklinD with Big Orange touching noses. They were stabled next door to each other and he said Big Orange was missing his pal too. The dreadfully sad thing is they will never know what happened to their friend and will constantly be looking for them.
What a sad sad time Moe I know that feeling when you wake up after these dreadful events and suddenly it hits you what has happened. I’ve never felt this low for a long time goodness knows what it’s like at Seven Barrows our hearts go out to all the lads and lasses there. Of course the show must go on but the sadness lingers. :(
