The time for action was three weeks ago.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta announced as testing positive.

Surely stable door and horses bolting should be brought to mind!!

WE (and most other countries) SHOULD HAVE CLOSED OUR BORDERS WEEKS AGO !!!
Drastic I know but necessary but pointless now.

Nah, it’s not pointless, slow it down as much as possible.

deary me….Ginger your at your finest on this one.

You’d rather listen to the experts, then state our experts in Ireland are wrong.

You can’t close the Irish border; we’ve been through that

We should follow what the experts say.

How can ireland just blanket close all schools? What if there is a decent sized outbreak, 30% of doctors/nurses and medical professionals have children and they now need to be off work to look after them, so who looks after everyone else?

I dont always agree with 95% of what the government sais, but trying to time this right is the correct decision, people forget the implications blanket closures have, for example, the scottish football leagues have been told there will be no help from them to stay afloat when games go behind closed doors, because theres no money….. how many of these teams will be lost should this happen and apply that theory to small business, theres alot more in play here than just CANCEL EVERYTHING OUR GOVERNMENT IS ACTING TOO SLOW

The Statistics and the science at this stage point to caution and care, not major disrupt and mass panic.

Anyway i know nothing about the virus, nothing whatsoever other than what ive read and listened to, but what i do know is the economic impact if we go about this wrong, which arguably will be worse than the virus itself if managed incorrectly.

Agree Ham. I have tried to make the point about the economic implications on several forums but just get shouted down by self appointed expert keyboard warriors who then deny they are panicking!

100% agree Ham, there is a bigger picture here and that’s society and life after the virus. The evidence says that if we shut down schools and events for 3 weeks, then it would only slow the virus by about 5%. If we are to shut things down to make a difference, then it would need to be for 3-4 months to have an impact of around 20%. There is no way the government is going to shut everything down for 3-4 months because it would be economic carnage when in reality, the virus is here and there’s nothing we can do about that. They suggested yesterday that 80% of the country will get it, so we are better off accepting that and riding the storm and not screwing up life after it. There will come a time when we have no option but to shut things down around the peak of the virus, which is looking like smack in the middle of the best 2 months of racing of the year, May and June. Sadly means the flat season is going to get extremely disrupted I fear. What a horrible start to the year.

    Excellent post ham.

    Cav,
I am not saying the Irish experts are wrong, just that those at the top have acted too soon.

There will probably be a time where schools are closed etc but must be carefully judged, otherwise it is counter-productive.

Maybe Ireland is in a much worse place than Britain and we haven’t been told. Or maybe your health service is in a much worse state than even our NHS and Leo panicked? Maybe after the latest election Leo is afraid of appearing not to act hard enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I think mainland Europe has no choice but to cancel sporting events – should’ve been done sooner! Events with countries who are further down the line than us was asking for trouble. eg Arsenal v Olympiarcos and spanish football fans at the Liverpool game was crazy. Without those European matches domestic competition could’ve continued. Britain and (from what I’ve heard) Ireland are not YET in the same place as mainland Europe. ie No reason why Cheltenham – an event between Britain and Ireland – shouldn’t continue.

Regarding school closures: with the regulation two-week easter holidays due at the end of the month, my hunch is that extended closure after the holidays will be imposed then. Working parents will have made provision for child care over the two weeks so it might prove less of a problem for them to organise extended care into the summer term

I was impressed (as usual) by Messrs Whitty and Vallance at the press conference yesterday, not least by their remarks on behavioural psychology. They are, in my opinion, correct to state that if draconian measures such as ‘lockdowns’, social distancing, mass isolation and severe travel restrictions are taken too early this will place too much of a burden on the public, some/many of whom will abandon the restrictions, having borne inconvenience for too long, just at the time when peak infection is occuring, thereby undoing what good work has been done

That the UK is dealing with this pestilence in a more cautious manner than many other countries doesn’t mean we have it wrong: who can say with any certainty which is the right way to handle it?

The opinions touted by racing fans on this forum on the measures required to contain the spread of coronavirus are entertaining and well-meant but I’d rather listen to the views of those grounded in medicine and science

Would anyone take any notice of Professor Whitty’s and Sir Patrick Vallance’s tips for the Gold Cup?

Probably as much use as Matt Chapman’s and Dave Nevison’s tips, Drone.

Off to kempton today for what will be last days racing for a while. Suspect Newbury next week will be stopped. Only saving grace is that bulk of jumpers season has survived. Less bothered about the flat. Most flat meetings are just muppets drinking senseless so to create a behind closed doors atmosphere they could simply throw beer on the floor with a few pools of puke

It’s a bit silly really because most race meetings are no more contact than a supermarket

The virus wipes out most over 60 so being 59 I’m safe but racing crowds will be at least 50% smaller next year which means More room to move around at the big meetings so all good really

I’m a trustee at a large allotment association with over 250 members – whose average age probably exceeds even that of the average racegoer – and at our annual AGM the other day quipped “there’s likely to be a lot of vacant plots by the end of the year” which was met with one snigger and four tut-tuts

Being 63, I’ve added a codicil to my will donating my maincrop potatoes to a foodbank. Better get them planted sharpish

    Enjoy the swansongs at Kempton

    You gotta keep laughing :bye:
