Owning Cafes or airlines is going to be tough now.

Is it scaremongering, yes. ….it might all blow over in a few months and some will say that. But with the unknown, its better to assume the worse case scenario.

Really, Cheltenham seems a bit irresponsible.

It is extremely irresponsible to say the least. As already mentioned, the numbers we have TODAY are about 10-14 days old.
The NBA has postponed it’s season, the same will apply to the NHL and highly likely to baseball at all.
The Cheltenham officials have zero idea where their visitors come from and how the virus is spread. Bumping into the same people 50 times a day increases the risk instead of minimizing it.
But, we shall see in about two weeks time who’s right and who’s wrong.

Trevor Hemmings is staying at home due to his doctors’ advice.

“But we shall see in about two weeks time who is right and who is wrong”.

Will you be judging it by numbers, Ex-Ruby? In two weeks time it is almost certain numbers will be up; sporting events or no sporting events.

You won’t know whether cancelling sporting events (and Cheltenham in particular) has increased the number of deaths… unless it can definitely be traced to the Festival… And even then we don’t know what those spreading the virus would’ve done had they not gone racing. Might have spread it even more if staying away from Cheltenham.

    Just found this:

    https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/487110-tests-indicate-coronavirus-can-survive-in-the-air

Ginge, you will be able to trace them down to the Festival just like the skiing tourists who went to Northern Italy and got the infection.

And why has UEFA stopped the Euro League and the Champions League????

It is currently far worse in Italy, France etc than here. So of course they need to take different precautions.

Personnally, I’d rather leave it to the experts. If they feel it’s best to cancel events, then sure – do it. Am sure the government is taking advice and will act as and when they are advised by experts to do so.

Ireland is banning outside gatherings of 500 or more people from 6pm tonight until 29th March when it will be reviewed. I suppose that means Irish racing is either going to stop or take place behind closed doors.

All GAA sports (the major sports by far in Ireland) suspended until March 29. That includes training as well as as games.

Irish racing confirmed behind closed doors until 29th March at least. One stable representative, one groom and one owner per horse permitted.

That makes sense, doesn’t it? Won’t happen in the UK that fast, unless Boris loses his Corona immunity.

So if the virus continues for many months, will Racing be a spectatorless sport for many months? Will their schools be shut for many months? Schools shut means health workers staying at home, looking after their own children.

    Ireland has gone too soon.

There may well be a time these measures will be the right thing to do, just not yet.

will Racing be a spectatorless sport for many months?

Who cares about Racing or bookmakers in those times? You’ll be happy to get proper medical treatment and this will happen only, if there are very few Corona emergencies. Otherwise, it will be Corona first and other treatments or surgeries will have to wait.

Racing is not going to treat or cure you.

Mixed messages coming from all over the place.

Man City v Arsenal off due to Arsenal players possibly have contact with the Olympiakos Chairman. Olympiakos v Wolves game goes ahead

Football matches played behind closed doors but this does not stop fans congregating

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51846159

Also more fans will watch in pubs, clubs if played in empty stadiums.

Trump bans European travel to US but UK visitors are OK

    I’m confused.

    Oh dear.
Of course Racing is not going to cure you. What I am saying is countries should not act until their particular country needs to – about anything – not just Racing…

You said Ireland had banned spectators until March 29th. What I asked (in a roundabout way) is what happens on March 29th if nothing has changed? Presumably all their measures (not just about Racing) will continue. If the public are on shutdown for a long period they become complacent. ie Going too soon is counter-productive.

imo Sporting events in mainland Europe need to be spectatorless now (Champions League etc) but not YET competitions involving countries like Britain and Ireland. Cheltenham involves (other than one or two french) just British and Irish spectators.

Countries should certainly not close schools unless they have to. Scientific advice says it will be counter-productive if done too soon.

If people have any symptoms they should stay at home.

Ginge, it’s not about the symptoms. It’s about the people who have NO symptoms over the first 5-6 days, who have social contacts in those times and who obviously pass the virus on to others. That’s what this is all about.

I am dissapointed by the level of thought thats going into these posts. Some of you should really stick to the horses. :good:

The simple fact is that the only way to react to this is to over react. By the time you wait for the situation to escalate, its already too late. This might all blow over in a couple of weeks (probably not) and even if it does, this is still the right action to take at this time.
