I’ve read that he was pulled up and dismounted. Any news on his well being?
May 7, 2008 at 15:49 #162141On Channel4 Racing they said that he had broken down but didn’t give any more news. I hope he is okay.
May 7, 2008 at 15:54 #162142Any news also on King Orchisios, too? ? ?
May 7, 2008 at 16:08 #162143Hope they are both Okay, the general impression from channel 4 was that both horses pulled up in the chester cup were ok. With shipmaster I thought he was just pulled up as the jock felt he wasnt liking the faster pace, he looked to be going well enough at the time and didnt look like anything was wrong. Imagine it will say in the race report when it comes up on the RP site.
May 7, 2008 at 16:34 #162148King Orchisios was put down, I’m afraid.

May 7, 2008 at 16:49 #162151Looking at the severity of King Orchisios’ injury, I’m glad he was put down. Horrible incident.
May 7, 2008 at 17:14 #162153I didn’t like C4’s coverage of the King ORchisios incident. – showing the incident again and then saying words to the effect of
"The main thing is that the other horses managed to avoid him"…
and then Plunkett saying "that is part and parcel of horse racing i’m afraid"
Seemed a touch inappropriate when a decent horse had just suffered a fatal injury..
May 7, 2008 at 17:33 #162158I thought the horse lost its’ footing, didn’t realise it was as serious as that.

RIP King Orchisios.

So would you prefer the event was airbrushed out?
I would suggest both of the comments above are valid.
Sadly these events are part and parcel of racing and there is nothing at all to be gained by burying our heads in the sand and pretending it doesn’t happen.
Indeed I would suggest that denial plays into the hands of groups like animal aid.
Yes it is very sad but it is a price that sometimes has to be paid.
May 7, 2008 at 18:43 #162169It’s all relative, Paul, but if your brother/sister/uncle/auntie/whoever was hit by a car would you mind the doctor saying ‘well, people will insist on not looking where they’re going’?
Perfectly valid, I think not.
May 7, 2008 at 18:45 #162170or – "well the main thing is that no other cars were involved"…
I wasnt asking for it to be airbrushed – just a bit of tact wouldn’t go astray perhaps?
May 7, 2008 at 18:49 #162171I doubt tact and Marietta Doran will ever be uttered in the same sentence.

I would suggest comparing an accident to an animal to an accident to a human is not comparing like with like.
However as you raised the point – if the circumstances of the accident you mentioned were that said relative walked in front of the car I strongly suspect I would make the comment before the doctor. If the comment is factually correct it is valid.
Going back to the comments made on C4, which I must admit I have not heard first hand, nor have I seen any of todays racing yet.
The former comment “The main thing is that the other horses managed to avoid him”[/color:bxozipq1] is a very valid comment, In a five furlong sprint a horse going down or breaking down easily has the potential to bring down other horses and cause carnage.
An analogy would be if a plane crashed just outside a town – would it not be valid reportage that it was lucky the plane missed the town?
Regarding the latter reported comment, “that is part and parcel of horse racing i’m afraid”[/color:bxozipq1] It needs to be borne in mind that the demographic of the C4 audience is not the same as that of a specialist racing channel. There are many casual viewers and it does no harm to put events into context.
Indeed rather than criticise what was said on C4 I am more inclined to be ultra critical of the RP and Sporting Life as I cannot find any mention of the incident in any of the race analysis. “in touch, quickly pulled up” in The Life whilst the RP acknowledges he broke down in the comments in running but nothing mentioned in the race report or analysis.
Therefore had I been reliant on ‘trade’ sources I would not have been aware of the horses demise.

I didn’t see or hear the piece to camera in question, but I’d guess Alice probably meant the above more in the sense of "there but for the grace of…" rather than "ah well, sh*t happens".
Having observed her tangible relief at the safe return of her horse Lord Code after being brought down in a nasty incident at Hackwood Park on Monday, I don’t have her down as dispassionate where equine injuries / fatalities are concerned.

I dislike that comment because it is both patronising and a dismal platitude. Disagree with some of the above. Most viewers are well aware that this sort of thing can happen and dont need to be told the bleedin obvious
No suprise that it came from Alice "who cares what the punters think" Plunkett
May 8, 2008 at 08:40 #162272King Orchisios … a horse with a 00000000 formline that won a race on Champions day last year and burnt my quadrella?
RIP to him.
May 10, 2008 at 07:44 #162570I heard from connections that Shipmaster is physically OK (or will be) but will not run again
