I like Setanta as its good to watch football without Clive Tyldesley commentating and the Saturday teatime footbal is great following on from the racing in the winter.
June 11, 2009 at 15:32 #233362Cheers Roddy, thank you for that.
It is of some small comfort to read that our RUK service should continue without undue interruption. I can only hope that in the event of a Setanta failure that there will be a seamless transfer of broadcast to either via Sky or direct from RUK. ( Incidentally, if SKY were to take over the RUK broadcast, would that result in any appreciable increase in time-delay, I wonder, from the point-of-view of In-Running?).
Good advice to keep on eye on those direct-debit bills, btw!
June 11, 2009 at 16:08 #233368RUK will be fine. I always enjoy Setanta for the Boxing & Football. But i got Setanta for RUK, and it was free in the package so was great value. But just like the ESPN channels in the Setanta package, RUK is not connected with Setanta apart from being in the package.
So RUK will carry on as normal when Setanta go into Admin.
I will happily pay £9.99 a month for it, but anything above that is going to put people off, all though whatever they charge i will pay as i need RUK.
What would be best if RUK do a deal with SKY to put it into the SKY package, this meaning no charge at all, and more viewers. The charge through the RUK site is like a racing club, so hardcore fans will still take that route if they want, but for average fan, if it was free in the SKY package, then it would attract more new fans to the sport.
I would happily put up with few adverts also.
June 12, 2009 at 15:52 #233526Seems like Setanta will be saved going from reports last night. A mystery buyer has suddenly appeared and is ready to step in and save them.
I will take anything above 4/5 on it being Rchard Branson. Expect the names to be changed also.
Setanta 1: Virgin Sports 1
Setanta 2: Virgin Sports 2
Setanta Golf: Virgin Golf
Setanta News: Vrgin Sports News
Setanta Ireland: Virgin IrelandGood luck to him, if anyone can save them, he stands best chance.
June 19, 2009 at 22:25 #235293Buyer pulled out and they failed to make payment to the EPL, looks done now.
June 19, 2009 at 22:41 #235297From a purely selfish point of view, I enjoy RUK as part of the SetantaSports pack which comes free with the VirginMedia XL TV deal – now, if Setanta are gone, then RUK won’t be part of the SetantaSports pack and without an owning company, will VirginMedia now start charging for RUK or do us XL and SkySports subscribers still get it for free?
June 19, 2009 at 23:51 #235310Maybe RacngUK could collapse aswell and ATR could show all the races, and have highlights to every race for free. I’ve no sympathy for RacingUK, they collaborate with the Racing Post to charge for highlights. I do like some of the people on the channel, but there’s no room for sentiment in their book when they give RP racing footage and get us to pay for it, so i’ve no room fo sentiment either.
June 20, 2009 at 00:25 #235324RUK wont collapse at all. They have stated it will go free to air for a period of time and then consider subscription again. Its not owned by Setanta
Sad whats happened with setanta, but even when they first came on board, their business plan looked way too optimistic. There was quite a bit of media comment to this effect at the time.
June 20, 2009 at 00:27 #235325Ultimately the racing authorities and major courses must know that in these days of redcued BBC coverage and so many alternatives to betting on racing, keeping top races very accessible is essential, especially as the at home betting market is increasingly dominant
June 20, 2009 at 01:05 #235338Hopefully, they might still be able to salvage something from the wreckage – fingers crossed it’s not Steve Macmanaman.
June 20, 2009 at 01:22 #235342I really do hope that Setanta fold and wish that they hadn’t stuck their noses into TV sports coverage in the first place!
June 20, 2009 at 03:02 #235362They have stated it will go free to air for a period of time and then consider subscription again.
Are you fairly confident of that scenario, Clive?
May I ask, have they made that statement recently?
And have they specified how long that "period of time" would be?I can’t understand why RUK would follow this direction. Surely it doesn’t make fiscal sense on their part to go Free To Air. Wouldn’t all of us subscribers immediately cancel our monthly debits, no?
June 20, 2009 at 14:22 #235462Just had to smile to myself – there is a bank of TV screens round here in the media centre at Ascot and I happened to glance up at the screen which has been showing RUK all week, to see an advert for a certain “feminine hygiene” product.
I was thinking bl**dy hell, are they that worried about revenue that they are having to carry paid for adverts now.
It was with some relief I then realised someone had retuned the screen to C4.
Although one could, perhaps, argue the ad may have been somehow appropriate
June 21, 2009 at 17:21 #235678There is talk of a stand alone subscription charge of £15-£20 in today’s Post. As a current subscriber through the Virgin package if that becomes a reality I would almost certainly only subscribe for the months that included the likes of Cheltenham and Aintree. Bad as it is I would make do with the replay service for the other action. Hopefully, others will do the same.
June 22, 2009 at 01:23 #235741£20 per month sounds expensive but it’s better value than £50 per month for the printed Racing Post I suppose.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they put a 12-month minimum contract on subscriptions to stop people dipping in and out for Cheltenham, Goodwood etc. Seems more ridiculous than ever to have two separate channels for the sport.June 22, 2009 at 02:36 #235753
